I brought a phone back to Tesco today to get my money back. Didn't notice till I got home I was short changed by 50 quid. Phone was 200 I got 150 back in 10's and 20's. I'm planning on going back tonight to ask for it back. What are the chances that they will believe me???

You can try but honestly I doubt they'll believe you after you've already accepted what they gave you and left the premises.

Well if the refund was supposed to be £200 and given in cash then the float would be up by £50 at the end of the day wouldn’t it? So definitely go back with your refund receipt.

I went back in and told to come back tomorrow when the supervisor is there.

IME they'll check the till and if it's £50 over, you'll get the cash as the error is proven.

If there was no error and a member of staff took the cash, you won't.

So went back in this morning. Explained what happened to the sup and he went off to check if the cash desk was opened today. Surprise surprise, it's not open today. They will check tomorrow and phone me back.
Doubt I'll get it back

I know it’s too late now, but always check any change/refund there and then. Don’t worry about holding to the queue. If you spot an error whilst stood there, they can rectify it there and then. If you walk away then come back afterwards there’s nothing they can do unless they remember the mistake (eg they remember you giving a £20 kite but only gave you change for £10).

Honestly though - £50 short is not a mistake. That’s almost certainly been done deliberately, and that member of staff has pocketed it. The till will be correct. You can only hope they find a pattern with this one member of staff and complaints like this… but if he shocked if you got it back.

if I were a member of management working there and someone came in and told me they didn’t notice being £50 short at the time I’d think they were lying because who doesn’t check that sort of amount when they are given it? As a previous checkout operator I’d have counted it out in front of you so I’m surprised they didn’t do that.

it’s a crap lesson to have to learn, which is why I’m commenting for other people to learn from. For expensive purchases, card is definitely better so you can see the refund going back on!

Damn, I really thought OP was going to get her money back based on the previous posts about the till not tallying.

OP I hope it was an honest mistake and you get your money back.

I know totally my own fault for not checking it. I did sign a refund slip.
The cashier was talking to me about not having enough cash in his till and had to open a cash box/safe thing underneath the counter. He was counting out money from that to add to his till and my refund at the same time.
The girl I spoke with last night was there this morning and she said yesterday that they will sort it out(made me think they knew the float was over). Supervisor today was understanding and went to check if the cash office was open so they could check the takings from yesterday.
They took my clubcard number and phone number so hopefully tomorrow a miracle will happen and I get it back.

Tesco rang and their till was over so I'm get my money back. Delighted and relieved. Going to collect it later today.
Lesson learned always double check my money.

Phew! Hoped this would be the case and so glad to hear it is.

Aw that’s good news! Not everyone is a wannabe thief and the worker probably just got confused having to get money from the cash box. Obviously Tesco had to check it out too. Good result all round

ps in my head that would be a free £50 I had just got so I would be thinking of what I could treat myself with it 🙈
