Has anyone ever had someone pretending to be someone you know on messenger

Today I had a message from a family member, only what they wrote was very weird.
I’ve since restricted the account. Has this happened to anyone else?

I get people whose accounts have been cloned messaging me. It usually only takes one message before they try to hit you up for money.

As pp, I’ve had one friend hacked twice. They are very clever the way they do it.

StickyToffeePavlovas · 05/12/2025 03:21

Yes asking how I am and then video calling. I didn't pick up thankfully but they were relentless. That's when I blocked them.

Once got a message from Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs (I've never met him) asking for £20 for a paint roller and tray

told him to bugger off

Mrssweary · 05/12/2025 06:57

thanks for the reply’s yeah I think this one definitely has been hacked! Yikes yet another thing to look out for.

Yes.

If I’m at all uncertain I apologise for being paranoid & then ask something only that person would know, like how we met or where we last saw each other. Either they answer the question or they vanish.

I’ve had a text message from my DD saying ‘hi mum this is my new number…phone stolen….can you send £££’…. While I was chatting to my DD on messenger!

I had a message from Jim Kerr from simple Minds thanking me for my support. Let it down by calling me "dear" so obv not him . Didn't ask if he really shagged Liz Jones and if he has the biggest penis in showbiz as rumoured Grin

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 05/12/2025 07:42

‘Hello my dear…’
’Hello, how are you?’

It’s instantly recognisable after the first couple.

I remember my friend being really excited when “Keanu Reeves” friend requested her on Facebook.

She had clearly missed it was actually a request from “Keanu Reeeves”.

BauhausOfEliott · 05/12/2025 09:47

Yes, several times. Hacked / cloned accounts etc.

Jugendstiel · 05/12/2025 09:48

I've had several from old acquaintances stranded in remote countries and needing me to wire money. The most unlikely people and I'd be about 900th on their list of people to ask. So I reposted them as phishing.

I've had loads of lovely messages from my favourite musicians. One even wanted a private chat with me because he was so happy I was such a big fan. Unlike his other 54 million fans. I was tempted to pretend I was gullible to see how it panned out but I couldn;t be arsed to waste my own time as well as theirs.

purplecorkheart · 05/12/2025 09:50

Yes, one lady in my town was hacked and requested that a code be sent to her friend and for them to send on the number. Loads of people did and they also got hacked.

Aposterhasnoname · 05/12/2025 10:22

Many times, I usually regale them with long convoluted stories about "Harry" and his many unfortunate accidents involving hanging curtains naked beside a bag of carrots.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 05/12/2025 10:30

No, but I once got a message saying, "Hi Mum add my new number xxx" I knew it couldn't have been either of my boys because they would never ever sign off a message to me with kisses.

TeaRoseTallulah · 05/12/2025 10:32

Yes, block immidiately and tell the person their pretending to be so they can change their password.

thetallfairy · 05/12/2025 10:36

Yes my old headteacher

I worked at her school

We added each other on Facebook

Then I got loads of messages saying she needed amazon vouchers

The messages sounded so much like the way she normally speaks so I was so close to falling for it
I wasn't sure if they were gifts for the school so I messaged her to check how many she needed ( I WhatsApp her)

I had that, except mine was "Hi dad". Then launched into a spiel about dropping their phone into water while fishing...?

I tried to spin out the conversation, for my own amusement, but it died off very quickly.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/12/2025 10:44

I get the hi mum, here’s my new number texts quite often. I don’t have kids…
