Books for 13 year olds

My dc usually furnish me with book lists for Christmas. This year they can’t think of any, despite both still being avid readers. Dd(15) prefers sci fi so Dh has taken this on as he is very into that stuff.

Which leaves 13yo ds. He likes Patrick Ness but has read all his books. I’m stumped. Most YA stuff doesn’t appeal to him as it tends to focus on relationships (the horror!) or fantasy which is not his thing, despite him being into D&D.

If you are in possession of a 13yo, what are they enjoying reading at the moment?

Mine is really enjoying the “merde” series by Stephen Clarke

They sound interesting. I think ds might like those.

Dan Brown? Da Vinci Code etc? I know you said not fantasy but Pratchett?

Interested in this thread?

I have a 12yo who still likes to be read to. Animal Farm, 1984 and Sherlock Holmes have gone down well recently.

Have they watched stranger things? I'd go with 'a wrinkle in time' if so, it's featured quite heavily!

Has he done Percy Jackson? Greek myth retelling.

Also, have a look at some dystopia- maze runner, hunger games

If he likes history try him on Richard Harris; Munich, Fatherland, Enigma, V2. Also maybe John Grisham.

VenusClapTrap · 04/12/2025 08:50

Dan Brown and John Grisham good ideas.

I’ve tried to get him to read Pratchett and Orwell but so far he’s resisting, which is a shame as I know he’d love them. But then again we already have an extensive library of those, so no point buying for Christmas.

I bought him Sherlock Holmes last year, but he couldn’t get into it.

He loves history, so Robert Harris could work.
