Rat or mouse?

Last week I found evidence that a rodent had been in my dry food store cupboard. The mdf back panel had always been loose, but a hole had appeared at the loose edge. Some of my packs of nuts and seeds had holes in them so had started to spill. I believe I caught it within 2-3 days. There were no droppings. I cleared out the cupboard and made sure everything was put in storage jars. I also taped up the hole with strong packing tape.

Now, 5 days later, the hole is back! It's approx 10 x 6 cm, so I'm concerned it might be a rat rather than a mouse. What do you think?

In the meantime, I'm off to buy some metal sheeting to glue over the hole! 😬

Mice can fit through the tiniest of gaps. That does seem awfully big for a mouse so I would guess rat. Unless it’s something else entirely and you now have a squirrel or something.

I had a mouse years ago and the hole i found and blocked was smaller than a 10p. I blocked it with wire wool and its never been back. I think that's too big to be a mouse. Id get someone out.

Let's see if it can get through this 🤞 ...

sorry but that looks like a big hole for a mouse 🫣

Are there any droppings? Smaller ones of about 1 cm long are mice I think, larger more oval shaped droppings about 2 CMS are rats.

No way would a mouse bother chewing a hole that big, that'll be a rat.

CalmShaker · 02/12/2025 21:08

Why only mouse and rat as a selectable option? That hole is big enough for a badger

It's back!!!! The barrier on the left did its job, but the hole on the right appeared overnight. 😬

Time to call in the professionals.
