She is 16, diagnosed adhd a couple of years ago, she thinks this is a reason she doesn’t have to do anything basically. Won’t go to college, won’t get an apprenticeship, has applied for UC and has been told she needs a Fitnote to say that adhd prevents her from working ? Is this right ? Seems insane? My nephew has adhd that he was medicated for and he is a robotics engineer who works his ass off!
She is also waiting on her pop assessment.

Why do you care ?

Anywherebuthere · 01/12/2025 16:19

How does it concern you?

Another 30 mins, another goady disability thread.

So a teenager is lazy, confused and doesn't want to get up in the morning? I think that's pretty standard, though usually temporary.

crscrs · 01/12/2025 16:23

Because her mum moans to me about it ! Nothing about a “goady disability thread” it’s the truth and if people get offended that’s not my issue

And all the benefit claiming you don’t think is giving her the wrong idea about how to get by in life ?

If she hasn't yet had her assessment, I don't see what you mean by 'all the benefit claiming'. She has presumably claimed precisely nothing at this point.

crscrs · 01/12/2025 16:28

Was also meant to add friends dd is more than capable of working, she goes on holidays with her friends, stays out all hours, calls benefits people herself with no support, spends money etc. she just thinks because she has adhd she doesn’t have to work and get free money instead

Okay, trying too.

Well, she's going to have to get that fit note, and that means convincing someone that she can't work at all. And all the stories about PIP assessments suggest that that part of it won't be too easy either, so let's see what the outcome is, eh?

Well this was kind of my confusion, what would she have to convince a doctor of for this to happen ? It just seems extreme and I’m surprised she is willing to go and lie to a doctor just so she doesn’t have to actively look for work

She can get a Drs sick note but that'll only last so long I believe. She needs to be receiving PIP for UC to pay long term.

Octavia64 · 01/12/2025 16:43

Lots of 16 year olds don’t want to work.

she’s tried to claim, they have told her she can only claim if too disabled to work. This is presumably correct.

they will now assess her and see if that is the case.

the process appears to be moving as expected.

snoopythebeagle · 01/12/2025 16:44

Why do you think this is any of your business?

Well she could say her condition is the truth and if you are offended by it , that’s not her issue.

EleanorReally · 01/12/2025 16:45

that is tough for her mum
just be an ear

Applesinapie · 01/12/2025 16:46

she can try all she wants but if she’s capable of working she is unlikely to be granted pip. It’s your friends problem not yours. I’d be telling my kids they absolutely have to be in work or education and not just lounging around going on holidays but if she hasn’t done that and is presumably funding this lifestyle then that’s on her.

Because I’m her mums friend and her mum is stressed about it all and venting to me. I didn’t even think a 16 year old could claim uc

You're no friend.

Since when does posting someone else's business on a public internet forum because they vented to you, make you an actual friend?

You're blatantly looking for posters to pile on the 16 year old girl here.

This

Absolutely shameful

BringBackCatsEyes · 01/12/2025 16:50

Young people need to be in training or education until they are 18.
Our county council contacted us to ask what my post-16 yo was doing and whether he needed any support. I have no idea what that support would look like, but I'm pretty sure a 16 yo can't normally claim UC (there are some exceptions).

She is 100% capable of working, she can go abroad on her own, she can go to the shops on her own and get Ubers etc

Keep your own side of the street clean and don’t dwell so much on what other people’s children do or don’t do.

The benefits system is what it is, and will be a greater burden on taxpayers under this government. However, I don’t think anyone has a particularly nice life on benefits so the incentive to work remains. My son also has ADHD (medicated), got a first class degree and works hard now in a good graduate job. When he was diagnosed I remember him saying “Mum I’m disabled!” I calmly explained to him that whilst ADHD definitely affects him, if he wanted a nice life he would still need to find strategies to manage his ADHD and function in the world like anyone else who wants the things that most people want (a home, enough money to be able to pay the bills, have a holiday, etc).

Lightuptheroom · 01/12/2025 16:59

At 16 she's classed as NEET (not in education, employment or training) mum needs to contact the local authority and.ask for assistance for her to apply to college, apprenticeships etc. She is unlikely to get PIP, the threshold is high. My step son is now 30, he's been refused pip 3 times, is currently on limited capability to look for work and work related activity universal credit, which started with a fit note from the GP. I'd direct mum to the NEET team at her local authority and see what can be sorted out because there's changes coming to how universal credit is paid and calculated, particularly for those under 21

So you've come on to bitch about the daughter on the internet? You don't sound like much of a friend Confused
