She is 16, diagnosed adhd a couple of years ago, she thinks this is a reason she doesn’t have to do anything basically. Won’t go to college, won’t get an apprenticeship, has applied for UC and has been told she needs a Fitnote to say that adhd prevents her from working ? Is this right ? Seems insane? My nephew has adhd that he was medicated for and he is a robotics engineer who works his ass off!
She is also waiting on her pop assessment.

I literally know 5 teenagers like this. Not sure what you’re expecting from this thread.

Perhaps because the OP is pissed of that lazy arseholes sponge of her hard earned taxes.

But the girl isn’t getting anything and is unlikely to be able to.

She may get a small amount of universal credit in the future but would be expected to prove she was spending a full time jobs worth of hours looking for a job otherwise she’d be sanctioned.

Because her mum moans to me about it ! Nothing about a “goady disability thread” it’s the truth and if people get offended that’s not my issue

It is your issue if she moans to you though, so tell her you don't have any advice sorry, and change the subject!

I don't blame the daughter. If I knew how pointless working was going to be, I would have gone on welfare, too. I'm not anti-work, by the way. You exchange your time for money that barely covers your bills, I'd pack it all in if I could.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 01/12/2025 18:36

You don't get to opt out of work simply because of an adhd diagnosis.

Equally, unless you're a medical professional yourself, you don't get to determine what other people may or may not be capable of doing.

Maybe stop worrying about whether she will or won't be able to claim, and leave it to the professionals to make their own assessment.

As someone who has adhd and also works full time in a very demanding role, I recognise that I'm not qualified to determine how the condition might affect other people.

RaininSummer · 01/12/2025 18:42

She can't claim UC at 16 anyway unless she isn't living with her parent(s).

This is what she wants the fit note for, so she doesn’t have to look for work, she told her mum they said she needed this to be able to claim being incapable to work as she doesn’t want to go to the job centre every week, something like that

But she won't get a fit note simply for having an adhd diagnosis.

But wanting a fit note and getting a fit note are two different things.

A GP would be utterly mad to sign her off long term. Do you really think one would?

My oldest has EUPD, Autism, anxiety, and depression (including multiple suicide attempts), and has previously suffered agoraphobia.

She was not awarded PIP or LCWRA, so I wouldn't worry about it. Someone with ADHD is highly unlikely to get anything.

We were told DD probably would have gotten some PIP if we had appealed, but telling someone with EUPD, autism, and anxiety that they need to allow a stranger back into their house was never going to work out. She would literally rather have starved than go through it again. The bar for getting PIP is very high, and a lot of evidence is needed. The first application is almost always denied and then overturned on appeal, which is a massive waste of money imo.

This idea that everyone and their dog is on higher rate PIP for anxiety is bollocks.

She is 100% capable of working, she can go abroad on her own, she can go to the shops on her own and get Ubers etc

That’s not for you to judge and determine. That’s what the DWP will do and their decision will be the one that stands.

Then you can move on to judging somebody else. 🙄
