What hack has blown your mind?

MindblownMia · 01/12/2025 14:36

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

This one is for cleaning silver. I use it to clean my silver jewellery.

Line a container with aluminium foil, shiny side up. Sit the silver to be cleaned in. Sprinkle in 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda.

Pour over boiling water.

It froths and instantly cleans all tarnish from the jewllery.

Just be careful to not pour boiling water over any jewellery that has precious stones, for them wait until it cools a bit and pop them in. Boiling water can crack some stones.

I don't know what chemical reaction is occurring here but it's impressive and FAST.

NEVER do this on silver plate, only solid silver (I guess). Disaster 😣

I store the clean, folded set of sheet, duvet cover and pillow cases between the mattress and the base of each bed they belong to. Makes things very easy.

I don’t know why this makes me feel so uncomfortable, but I definitely couldn’t do this!

I've watched this 5 times and I still cannot fathom 😅

Glad it’s not just me😂

Trimming green beans - keep them in the packet and just cut through chopping all the ends off in one go

I do this. With scissors

I swear by one of those electric candle lighters for this. You can light a candle that's burned a long way down without scorching your knuckles and they are great for lighting a firelighter that's buried right underneath newspaper (if you're as bad at lighting fires as I am). Best £5 I ever spent on Amazon!

Oh I have a lighting fires hack too... Assuming you use logs:

  • Place two logs horizontally across the bottom of your grate, with the bark edge of one facing you and the other with its back to the back of the fire - so it creates a valley between the two logs
  • Put a firelighter at either end of the valley, each one poking a tiny bit over the end of each log so you can see it when you come to light it
  • Lay kindling vertically across the gap between the two logs, like you're laying a train track. It will bridge the gap.
  • Now lay kindling the other way across - you normally need two rows
  • Put a third log on top
  • Light each firelighter.

I have never had a fire do anything other than get off to a roaring start - it heats the chimney superfast and starts drawing the smoke up, rather than the horrible smoky starts you can get. No need for newspaper.

Also loving the green bean one.

Mine is a gadget rather than a hack but it's worth bending the rules for. It's a safety tin opener. It doesn't cut into the metal on the top of the can or round the sides, it unpeels the top piece from the can leaving only blunt edges. The top sits so beautifully snug after unpeeling that at first you don't think it's worked, but it has, and the lid can be completely removed and can be neatly replaced should you wish.

Like the PP who recommended it, we bought one for DD as she went off to uni, and then had to buy ourselves one as we missed it.

Someone bought me this but I have tried and tried and can't work it

Another tip, if a jar won't open, whack the side of the lid hard with the handle of a knife (or something else substantial). I'm guessing just about everyone knows this, but just in case someone doesn't.

Get lily pollen off clothes with sellotape.

I've attached a peg bag to the basket I use to take the washing to and from the line. It's always exactly where you need it then. Probably only useful to those of us with a very long washing line!

I wear my peg bag. It's always exactly where I need it. 😋

If you mean putting the sheet, pillow cases and duvet cover into 1 pillow case me too
I read it on here and thought no way - but tis true and awesome

That one changed my life and the tidiness of my airing cupboard, just grab a ready filled and sorted pillow case on the dreaded bed changing day, makes a tedious task so much more straightforward

naemates · 02/12/2025 16:04

Anyahyacinth · 02/12/2025 15:14

Yeah that’s why I wouldn’t put it on overnight either

So weird that people are worried about losing their stuff but not burning in their beds!

Am I being thick?

Plate of tomatoes - yes.
Another plate upside down on top of the tomatoes - yes.
Press down on the top plate - yes.
Slice the knife through the middle - eh?

Do you mean sideways? I'm not sure I could do that? It's sounds really complicated.

There is a video of Jamie Oliver doing this partway down this article. By the look on his face when he was sucessful I don't think he believed it would work ....

Use a paint heat gun up the chimney on a cold day before you light the fire-warms up the chimney and you don’t get smoke billowing in the room.

At least two washing machine repair guys over the years advised always use washing powder never liquid or capsules, they just said it is better for the machine (not sure how though) but I do always use washing powder.

Same here. The powder goes into the drum, never the dispenser. My washing machines used to get mouldy and smelly despite cleaning. The current one is as fresh as when it was new.

Also instead of using fabric conditioner put a squirt of white vinegar in the drawer. It does the same thing, prevents static and helps keep limescale at bay.

Stripes on a duvet one doesn't always work. Some have stitched squares. That will blow your mind even further. 🤣

The other one people quote as 'fact' is that the hole in a past serving spoon is an individual serving size for spaghetti. No, it isn't. Different spoons have different sized holes. And spaghetti comes in different lengths.

Yes, the Grinch shat in my cornflakes this morning. 🤣

😂😂😂

What a great thread! I’ve learned lots of tips, but I really need one myself. We have recently moved to a house that already had a new kitchen. The sink is a grey composite and has loads of stains, probably mainly tea. I have no idea how to remove them as they are all over the draining board too. Has anyone got a tip? TIA

Try 'pink stuff' or 'bar Keepers friend', both of these get some ghastly stains out of our white quartz worktop...

Pennyfan · 02/12/2025 16:14

No need to whack a jar, just lever athe bottle opener on a tin opener under the lid and gently lift-the ffft means the vacuum is broken and the lid will turn easily.

mightymam · 02/12/2025 16:14

A dehumidifier keeps the room warm for longer/using scissors for ‘chopping’ coriander and other herbs, ironing school shirts from wet gives them dry cleaner finish/feel, adding ground nuts to sauces to up the kids protein intake without forcing them to nibble on nuts, using coconut oil as a body moisturiser, that the Costco washing up liquid is the same if not better than Fairy liquid and the 5L gallon is so much cheaper

Zippidydoodah · 02/12/2025 16:22

Sillysoggyspaniel · 01/12/2025 14:37

So mine is so simple that every day I'm amazed at the difference it makes. When you come downstairs in the morning take a load of washing with you and put it straight on. Means I basically never have to look at washing waiting to be done now.

This could be life changing! If only someone else transferred it to the airer/put it all away when dry……. 🤔

I'd like to go back to saying "tips" instead of "hacks"

This 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I hate this 'hack' nonsense with a passion! While we're at it, can we go back to saying 'series' instead of 'season' too. Thank you 👍🏻

Not necessarily a hack but everyone comments on it. My husband built me a laundry chute. He noticed i was struggling to carry heavy baskets of washing down the stairs, so he took out the floor/ceiling between the airing cupboard and pantry cupboard, bracketed a huge pipe to the wall, cut a hole in the bedroom wall, put on a little door on it so now i just put the washing down the pipe and it lands in a basket in the kitchen.

Edited

This is brilliant 👏🏻 I have a mental image of a Wallace and Gromit type set up here... Can he arrange it so it goes straight into the machine then back into your drawers when done? And something that makes your morning toast and slides you straight into a pair of trousers too? 😁😁💙

GurlWithACurl · 02/12/2025 16:33

@Bulletproofmama2021 and @Seaside3 thank you so much. Which “pink stuff” do I choose? There seems to be various types.

ToadRage · 02/12/2025 16:36

@BluntAzureDreamerI think those modifications are beyond his abilities but it would be cool if he could. 😂

Arlanymor · 02/12/2025 16:39

I don't own an iron because I still think humans are stupid for inventing the whole concept of ironing and fabrics that need ironing in the first place. But on the rare occasion I stumble across something that needs ironing - I only have three things I use - I just use my hair straighteners - done in a flash, particularly when it comes to the collars of shirts.
