What hack has blown your mind?

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

It's a Christmas one. I read on here a few years ago. Put tinsel on the tree before the lights,. push it right to the back of the branches. You can't see it but it makes the tree have a beautiful glow with the lights bouncing off it.

I recently discovered you can buy tinsel with already embedded lights in it. Dealing with tree lights is my yearly dread so these might be a sanity saver (yet to test).

50 odd years ago we were taught to just lick our fingers and smooth our tights up that way.

and rub hand lotion on hands then over tights to stop static cling

Or…wash covers inside out, when dry put one hand in each upper corner like a glove puppet, grab two bottom corners of the duvet through the fabric and shake shake shake. The cover will fall down over the duvet and reverse itself to show the right side up.

My husband does it like this, he swears he learnt it from Anthea Turner many years ago

Are you putting the duvet cover, pillowcase and the sheet in the pillowcase? See what you mean if so. I still find it quicker to tuck pillowcases in duvet cover fold and put sheet on top.

Yes all stored together and then stacked in a near pile in the airing cupboard. I was forever getting frustrated with looking for the correct size sheet before I started doing this. I have both double and king size beds and I just find this way so much easier and quicker.

I find the gloves hard on the hands and use
Shoes with rubber soles
crocs are good.

For the stairs I hold the shoes
For carpets I just rub my feet up and down

( I’m tempted to get out of bed and make a cup of tea with my tea bag strainer ☕️ 🙃 )

Edited

I use a damp squeegee it covers a bigger area than a glove in each sweep.

I wpuld try using 'pink stuff' . It cleans everything. I use it on 2nd hand furniture I buy ans renovate, it removes a lot of grime.

My tip re sheets: keep them in the room they're meant for, not the airing cupboard. And two sets is enough. 1 on, 1 in wash/waiting to be used. Then there's no need for all the faffing and putting stuff in a pillow case.

When making a cake, put the butter in the oven whilst it's preheating to soften.

Waahing- have the washer upstairs, saves dragging it up and down. We have an airer, but also a rail. Use coat hangers ans then juat gake clothes straight to cupboard once dry.

Thanks for the butter tip!

Makes sense!

Wish we had put the washer/dryer upstairs! Much more convenient. But my husband was scared of water coming through the ceiling below.

Seaside3 · 02/12/2025 11:42

@Themidnightelf444 ghtelf444 It's no different than worrying about a shower/bath/loo leak. To be honest ive never had a washing machine leak, so not worried about it. Perhaps naively I prefer a kitchen without washing everywhere ans will worry if I ever have a leak then. Its been up here for about 4 years with no issue. Fingers crossed it remains that way. The shower, on the other hand, did leak, which was annoying, but im definitely not having that in the kitchen!!

Why is she horrendous? The vibe?

The sheer volume of her!!

The poor male presenter couldn’t get a word in edgeways, she
shouted. talked over him to the extent that it was difficult to catch what he was saying! No way was I watching that again, I’ll keep doing it my “inside out and shake” method.

I am SO trying this tonight!

We bought a tree with lights already on. Game changer.

Ooh this is so exciting I am going to buy some today just to have a go at this 😂😂

Am I being thick?

Plate of tomatoes - yes.
Another plate upside down on top of the tomatoes - yes.
Press down on the top plate - yes.
Slice the knife through the middle - eh?

Do you mean sideways? I'm not sure I could do that? It's sounds really complicated.

Sadly we have a very budget machine...

Buy a smart plug, set a 'on' time, plug in machine ready to go.

Trimming green beans - keep them in the packet and just cut through chopping all the ends off in one go

My sister, who comes to us every Christmas, insists on 'helping' in the kitchen. Every year she prepares the green beans by chopping the end off each bean individually… (Yes, I’ve tried suggesting doing it differently.)

Wow, does that really work and the picture goes off intact?

The photos got off smoothly! I believe the article where I found this advice said the glass might break due to the temperature impact, but nothing of this kind happened to my photos. I think this might depend on how old the frame is and for how long have it been left in the freezer. I'll link the article if I manage to find it!

This morning I learnt that to take all the hair and dog hair of my daughters primark 'wool' smart coat (actually 100% polyester) that a rubber glove worked a million times better than a lint remover.

I vigorously dragged the rubber glove over the fabric and all the dog hair came off. I presume it was friction.

(covered in dog hair from lying in the bed with the dogs before taking off her coat I think!)

rugs..............wearing trainers or anything rubber soled, do horse pawing the ground motion. The amount of pet hair this lifts that the hoover misses, is mind blowing. My carpets are a different colour!

Good idea. Tree lights are the worst aspect of decorating.

Sadly we have a very budget machine...

You can get a timer that you plug into the socket and then put the machine plug into the timer gadget. I've been using one of these for years. It's simpler than figuring out the timer on the machine.
I started using it when I went on to a cheaper off peak usage tariff. Washing is timed to finish not long before I get up in the morning.
I find that it doesn't go musty smelling unless you totally forget about it for many hours and even then it's still possibly ok when I get back from work.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/12/2025 10:36

Also with poaching eggs, it's not the swirling or vinegar which make a difference, it's using fresh eggs and cracking them really gently and as close as you can, without burning yourself, to the pan of gently bubbling water.

Wouldn’t it be easier to crack them into a little dish first then slide it into the water (at least that’s what I do).

I always think this is the most pointless one suggested in these threads, it takes longer and doesn't actually achieve anything. Why open up a pillowcase and put stuff in it? Then have to tip it all out again. If you just tuck the pillowcases in with the folded duvet cover, that achieves the same thing. It's not like they move about in the cupboard.

I don't put them in a cupboard, I put them in a drawer under the bed and it would seem that somehow they DO like to wriggle around and lose eachother
Putting it all together in one pillow case keeps the set togeether and saves space

A sheet on top to keep it hot if I run it and then sidetracked , although I have then got in and left it on top like a blanket and had a very long very hot bath

Well I never !!

RareLimeDuck · 02/12/2025 12:23

Try rubbing with salt too

diddl · 02/12/2025 12:23

I think I'll try the rolling the duvet cover for curiosity but I fin the inside out & flip method easy enough.

We don't have any duvets bigger than 200x200cm though.

Here you go. There are also other ways in case you don't want to put the picture in the fridge.
