Book suggestions for 10yo boy

Looking for a couple of titles for DS’s Christmas gifts.

He’s a very good/capable reader but can still be put off by denser chapter books and has a habit of repeatedly going back to easier stuff he loves - e.g. Tom Gates, Horrible Histories and the x-Storey Treehouse series. He does also like short-fact-type non-fiction - world records books, 100 Things to Know About X, etc.

He tried but wasn’t interested in Percy Jackson and has no interest in Harry Potter, so I think most fantasy is out. We’ve got many Roald Dahls and the How to Train Your Dragon boxset and he’s read some of those.

Any recommendations?

If he likes graphic novels- Nathan Hales, Hazardous tales my son has enjoyed and asked for the rest of the series for christmas

Has he read Diary of a Wimpy Kid? The David Walliams books aren’t too wordy, if you’re ok with him.

He may enjoy the Explorer Academy Series by National Geographic.

Cherub series by Robert Muchamore. They are chapter books but huge page turners and exciting.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/11/2025 17:55

The Artemis Fowl books by Eion Colfer were what started DS reading when he was 10ish.

Treasure hunters series by James Patterson. A midway presentation but with more advanced vocabulary.
H.I.V.E series
The Thieves of Ostia
Young Samurai series

InvasionskyAlien · 30/11/2025 18:18

Guiness Book of Records

Or a similar book about interesting wonderful world facts

FlorenceAndTheVagine · 30/11/2025 18:20

Just a warning that the later Cherub novels aren’t suitable for a ten year old.

Phil Earle, Emma Carroll, Jenny Pearson (especially if he likes humour) and Ross Montgomery are some names to look at. Maybe the Alex Rider series too (Anthony Horowitz).

A bit violent and full of sex and drug references.
Great books. Not for a 10 year old.

SuperGinger · 30/11/2025 18:35

Charlie Higson's young James Bond or Perry Jackson books

DelurkingAJ · 30/11/2025 18:37

Who Let the Gods Out? (and sequels)
Adventures on Trains
Terry Pratchett short stories

ChikinLikin · 30/11/2025 18:43

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
A classic survival adventure.

Yes Alex Rider (by Anthony Horowitz) is brilliant for age 10.
