Side hustles that make you money

Anyone have a side hustle that makes decent money? By decent I mean NMW or above, not £50 a month on Etsy selling crocheted hats.

Google Amazon Influencer Programme. I make £18k a year for about 8 hours work a week. From home. In my own time. It’s easy. You just talk about things in your home that Amazon sell.

How many followers do you have? It says you must have a decent social media following

FastTurtle · 30/11/2025 16:37

My DS buys items in bulk and sells them either individually or in smaller quantities on eBay. After tax he makes about £800 per month and he also works full time. His bedroom looks like a mini warehouse!

I published a colouring book on KDP and haven't made a single sale.
Have made a few hundred doing AI data annotation work. Have a look at Appen, RWS Moravia ans Telus. It's EASY and above NMW.

At the risk of sounding super ignorant, what’s AI data annotation?

You just need a following to “get accepted”. I did it with tik tok. Started a pets / cute dogs / cats account. Posted for 5 days cute videos. Commented on loads of posts about dogs and cats etc. got accepted with about 120 followers but did go on TikTok 5 times a day to look “engaged”. . . So yes, what Amazon want is people who can influence their customers to press the buy button … but they don’t want returns / customers to feel disappointed to be disappointed so if it’s a cheap lightweight stepladder, we would say “this is great for someone with upper mobility issues, as it’s really lightweight “ … which means 20 stone Barry the windows cleaner doesn’t order it, (as he can tell it’s cheap lightweight ladder) but my 80 year old mum who want to reach the top shelf in the kitchen would think it’s great …

what platform do you work on now and have you built up a decent following? Thank you

Oh I use Canva. Can I DM you?

I’d be happy for you to DM me. I’ve actually got free access to Canva Pro through my job but alas, I am totally inept at it, I must warn you 😅

Minjou · 30/11/2025 21:20

I don't do.it anymore but I used to make about 15 quid an hour basically training AI online.

I just paid someone £25 to "reimagine" a photo in a particular artists style. Then I realised they probably just got AI to do it. Must be a decent income for her!

inezname · 30/11/2025 23:17

So £18 k a year, 8 hours a week.
You had 120 followers. People would buy from your affiliate links?

Did I get that right? As I have 7000 followers and have never made a penny from it.

Sounds way too good to be true sorry, unless I'm missing something? 🙏🏻 🤯

toastlady · 01/12/2025 00:16

I train AI models on a site called dataannotation.tech. I've been doing it for almost two years and have earned about £15,000. There's a test to pass, but once you are in, there's plenty of work available.

MMBaranova · 01/12/2025 00:21

It's an odd old field and it is clear that many make little or no return from their efforts. However, some things do work.

Form my experience and contacts: like @DarkRootsBlue says, there is virtual PA work. A good friend who is organisationally awesome has a part time PA job and does additional freelancing. It's reputational. A firm in a fix because someone has left, is away, or let them down, turn to her for a while and the wheels keep turning.

There are niche 'sexual services'. I assume they are grimy and not aligned with my values. However, I do know a contemporary who has clearly made a considerable sum from them. She knows I know and we have discussed it the once and now just don't go there.

Another friend has a brother who lives in Herts on Far East time doing something in Asian markets linked to UK firms. I truly didn't really grasp what he does when we chatted as it seemed improbable and dodgy, but it seems to pay off mortgages.

I do some freelancing occasionally, but it's very me based and linked to my knowledge and contacts related to trade and business risks with particular countries. It's for people who know me and trust that I can provide a sound confidential analysis and will pay for that.

Unlike all the above my Gran seems to have a continual Ebay throughput and makes very little from it for the effort she puts in. The process seems to please her though.

That is cheap! Ours is £65 cash in hand and often has 7/8 dogs

In her house! Or does she have kennels?

No, that’s Amazon affiliate. That’s where you push your followers onto Amazon …. They buy, you get commission. Amazon Influencer programme is new to the UK and essentially you just talk about products you already own, upload the video to Amazon and it gets put into the product page of that item. If people watch your video on that product page and then buy it - you get 2-6% Commision on the purchase price … I don’t know if your allowed to link things on MN. www.amazon.co.uk/shop/eastsussexsmallholders

@Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk thank you, but what do you do with all that bought product? Seems like a lot. Do you return it after making the video?

I make silver jewellery.

PlutarchHeavensbee · 30/11/2025 14:11

You don’t have to take my word for it. Try it if you want but I will eat my hat if you make £50 in 6 months. There are literally MILLIONS of colouring and puzzle books on Amazon. A lot of them professionally published. Someone starting now - with no advertising - is not going to sell anything. I’ve been on KDP for 12 years as I’ve published 9 full length novels. They’re tough enough to sell and they are unique. The other problem is using programmes like Canva, as if someone else has used the same image before you and the Amazon bots spot it - your account gets deleted. Hop on to the KDP forum if you don’t believe me and have a look for yourself. Unfortunately YouTube is full of morons promising people huge amounts of money for publishing notebooks, colouring books and other stuff, it’s all rubbish. Maybe 10 years ago but the passive income ship on that has definitely sailed.

@PlutarchHeavensbee - do you think KDP is viable for a new author writing novels? Is it really complex to get started with?

I’ve been a freelance copywriter for 15 years but AI has decimated the industry. My last client folded last week. There’s very little out there and there’s tons of writers fighting over scraps.

I’ve been musing the idea of KDP for some time. I’m in various forums but there seems to be a lot of infighting and cliquiness so I’ve not wanted to pipe up 🫣

Are all your novels set within the same universe? Do you still earn an income from your older books or does it tail off?

Sorry for all the questions! I’m absolutely devastated to lose my livelihood but I love writing so I’m hoping to diversify. I’m also going to set up a Substack but I really can’t see that making monet, despite what people tell me.

Thank you.

Good on him! What kind of stuff does he buy/sell?

Tobycarverysquad · 01/12/2025 07:08

I'm a sports coach after getting involved when my DC were younger. I freelance for various companies and deliver at camps held in the holidays as well as regular sessions on a weekly basis which are evenings and weekends. I make £25 and hour and around £450 per month although this month it will be £1k as I coached during the half term week.

I've just gone part-time - am old and want to retire. Some of my contacts have discovered this and I've been offered £900 a day for a bit of advisory HR work. Gobsmacked. Not doing it btw.

why on earth not??

The woman I leave my dog with when we go away charges £25 a night, cash in hand.

She's at home all the time, so main hustle rather than side hustle. Lots of demand, she has to turn people away.

Is she registered with council as a pet sitter? Thought you had to be for dogs as they could be noisy and annoy neighbours.

Advocodo · 01/12/2025 13:06

PiggyPokkyFool · 29/11/2025 23:24

I do lots of online surveys/interviews.
It's not NMW as it is variable i.e. last month I did a 90 minutes online interview about public transport and got £140. Yesterday I spent an hour doing surveys and earned about £4.50! Then one on perfumes(I had been sent to try) that lasted 12 minutes and was £30. Today I did one on pets that lasted 10 minutes and that was £5. it would be lovely if you could just pick the high value ones but often the great ones come from a survey which is 50p for 10 minutes work but at the end you get on a trial or community and then you get very well paid for your input. I love it.

How do you get to do these please?

I use 5 main panels but my favourite one is Swagbucks which gives you a 300 point boost when you earn 300 in the first 30 days. That's where I get most of the product trials and communities that are great to earn through
https://www.swagbucks.com/profile/MooWinner?rp=3
and also You Gov which is slower but easy to do surveys and look under the connections tab as there's lots of ways to make money there too

Happy to answer any questions as I have been doing them for years so know these two well.

There's a huge amount of AI training on Prolific which has been mentioned on the thread.
It can involve having discussions with AI, uploading pictures, critique of AI writing.
