Does anyone else get really excited for new things...

But then hate them when they arrive?

We've recently had new stair flooring done. I was excited to get it done, but now it's finished, I hate it. It makes a noise when you walk on it, and it feels wrong underfoot. It looks better, but it is wrong. I want the scrappy old carpet back.

My GPU went poof a few days ago, so I replaced it with a slightly more powerful one. I really enjoy computer-type things, so I was really looking forward to it. The colours are too colourful, and the brightness is too bright, the frame rate is higher, and it makes games too smooth and crispy. I miss my old one.

The worst of all is my new desk. I cobbled a made-to-measure one together with bits from Ikea. Again, I was really looking forward to finally having a desk big enough to fit the space it was in. It's too high, it's too deep, it's too empty, the texture is wrong. Everything about it is wrong. It looks nicer than the old one, but it is wrong.

This has happened to me a few times but less expensive things like chopping boards or a new hairdryer that were meant to be upgrades. I just return them if possible. My husband is quite impulsive and sometimes I get stuck with things he buys, whereas I'm an overthinker so usually like what I buy as it's been very well researched. Are you perhaps being impulsive and if you took more time you might like what you choose more?

Are you neurodivergent? It sounds like it could just be experiencing the change and once you’re used to it it’ll be fine.

I've never been diagnosed with ND, but DD sometimes sends me YouTube clips of a lady with ADHD which resonate with me (apparently most people do not have a constant internal monologue from the second they wake until the second they sleep and can think of nothing, not as in they are thinking the word nothing but as in they not thinking at all, their mind is empty - that was mindblowing to me)

However, if I do have ND, it is not severe enough that it has ever been diagnosed or questioned by anyone.

I don't think I'm being impulsive. The GPU wasn't as researched as I would usually research a PC component, but that's because mine broke, so I didn't have weeks to pick one. The desk and floor I looked into a lot, and I looked at a lot of different options. The choices in desks were somewhat limited due to the odd size I wanted, but I did look into a lot of DIY desk plans and bespoke, made-to-measure ones, and I like the way it looks. I love the way the floor looks; it's the way they feel and sound that I hate.

I remember when the phone icons changed (maybe last year some time?) suddenly after an update and I HATED them and tried to find out how to get the old ones back. I now can't remember what the difference was.

And when H bought a new amp back in 1997 and was all listen to how fabulous the sound is now and all I could hear was the breathing and the wind instrument keys clicking and the creaking of the chairs... I'd managed to tune all that out within a couple of months.

(Mind you, the stair carpet in my parents' house was STILL UPSIDE DOWN when we finally sold it 12 months ago, and I'm pretty sure the change happened in the early 90s...)

I'm like this. I hate change - especially uncontrolled change like a phone/computer update or a website layout changing. I found ways around the new Facebook layout for months, but now I can't even remember what the old one looked like! New furniture or household stuff takes me ages to get used to as well, even if I've chosen it. I think I might be a bit autistic though (not just because of this).
