Yikes - the price of olive oil!

I had reason to search my Amazon orders earlier today. I was trying to repeat buy some storage tins and so just put 'tins' into my orders.

Didn't find the storage tins but did find my history of buying 5L tins of Greek olive oil. When I started buying in 2012 the price was £29.99 and the first four tins were at that price. It started creeping up from then and by 2022 the price was £48.00.

It was then out of stock for ages so I found another brand but I clicked on it to see if it was available again and it is but . . . . the price is now £100.

Needless to say I won't be purchasing but that really is a terrifying price.

Crazy isn't it! I'm using butter and lard a lot. It's even worse when you read most olive oil in the shops is fake/not olives

What??!! 😮

What is it made from then?

We have switched to Aldi coldpressed rapeseed oil, which is a great substitute for cooking. Not sure how it would taste as a dressing, though.

Rapeseed oil tastes of fish to me (apparently this is like the coriander and soap thing).

I agree, olive oil is so expensive now. I was paying about £3 per 1L bottle and now it's £7 - for 750ml!

I have to say that the idea of risking £100 and possibly receiving a fake product is pretty grim.

It's quite vulnerable to climate change, groves have been burned in wildfires around the Med, plus a lot have been bulldozed in Palestine by Israeli forces.

That's so interesting - I thought it was just me who thought rapeseed oil tastes of fish! I was given some locally produced cold pressed presumably quite expensive rapeseed oil - that was awful too. Had to give it away.
