Why do you think this happens for actors?

Why do you think actors on Coronation Street often stay for years or decades playing the same role? Aren’t they supposed to be famous actors who could get massive roles elsewhere or to progress their careers, for example, why don’t they all move to Hollywood?

Or, is it because they are less likely to be successful in getting better careers than Coronation Street?

Take David Tennant... you can barely move on ITV for stuff hes in. Probably one of the best known TV actors abroad because of Doctor Who.

Not really had any major film roles!

IAmKerplunk · 28/11/2025 12:11

Just googled and this is all that came up. Seems women either move on quicker or are just more successful after their soap careers

Are there any male English soap stars who have been successful after leaving?

Rob James Collier was killed off in Corrie and later played Thomas Barrow in Downton, so he's done all right.

You could say the same about anyone in any job, why aren’t they moving on and trying to reach the very top. Some people just don’t want to, and some have families and life gets in the way. Not everyone can get to the top either. I don’t think I would want anything to do with Hollywood myself. Loads of reasons
i suppose!

How much would a regular on a soap opera earn? Roughy.

Depends hugely on the soap, how often they're in it and how long they've been in it, but probably between 50k to 100k a year on average, 200k for the big heavyweights. Particularly nowadays lots of them can bring in a bit extra by doing video messages, opening local fetes, doing panto/strictly/etc (if allowed to be released) or whatever as well.

As pps have explained, probably quite hard to give that up when 99% of your mates from drama school are living paycheck to paycheck and working 3 different customer service type jobs between auditions.

I’d forgotten about him - very true!

Angela Griffin has been successful after Corrie.

Suranne Jones is the only one I can think of that's made it out of corrie

Sarah Lancashire
Michelle Keegan
Sally Lindsay
Katherine Kelly
Joanne Froggat

Sue Cleaver does/did well too albeit a lot of that I think was pre-corrie.

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/11/2025 12:17

Russell crow and guy pierce did ok in Hollywood

benfoldsfivefan · 28/11/2025 12:19

Not mentioned yet is Rachel Shenton who was in Hollyoaks for three years and went on to win an Oscar!

IAmKerplunk · 28/11/2025 12:22

Some of the Brookside actresses did well too

LezUlez · 28/11/2025 12:23

Anne Reid is a fine character actress who has played many roles over the years; her character in Coronation Street was Ken Barlow's first wife.

Well a steady job at a single location and probably good hours suits some people especially if you have a family

not everyone wants stellar fame and fortune

Exactly. I have a friend who used to work at the ROH, so I got to meet lots of opera singers through him, and the ROH chorus (which is magnificent) is full of singers who absolutely had the vocal ability and acting chops for operatic careers as we usually think of them, but didn’t want the instability, constant travel, and strain on family/parenting/relationships, so chose a steady salary in London singing at a stellar opera house.

I love Anne Reid - though very different times when she was on Corrie

I would take the relative good fortune (50-60k a year) that I could probably double with 2 min birthday messages at £50 a time! Though I wouldn’t want the public intrusion 🙈 But once actors have been there for a while ie 10+years they are probably on a very good wage and unless they are caught shagging around or breaking the law are they hassled that much by the paparazzi?

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 28/11/2025 12:28

Bloody hell. I'd imagine if you were an actor and you knew you werent going to be the next Gielgud a part in a soap would be your pension plan. Maybe a bit of panto, strictly, iacgmooh, local Christmas lights switch on. Unless the part is Dr Drake Ramoray.

IAmKerplunk · 28/11/2025 12:29

Did anyone do well out of El Dorado?

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 28/11/2025 12:37

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Amelia Bullmore yet - she played Steph Barnes in Coronation Street in the early 1990s and has gone on to be in Ashes to Ashes, Happy Valley, and many other shows including the hugely successful Riot Women. It does seem that it's often the female stars that do well. I often think that it must be weird when you've been in a soap for a long time and your character does a job - does it end up feeling as if you're just doing that job as well (like if somebody is a teacher or works in a bar?).

Rob is rather better-looking than the average soap actor though, so probably had more choice.

Oh yes! She is an actress who I seem to see a lot but can never remember her name

Yes, Jesse Birdsall who played Marcus Tandy has done pretty well. Probably the only one to do well after Eldorado ended.

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/11/2025 12:48

Linus Roach was excellent in My Policeman.
Chris Hemsworth was on Home and Away as a very old teenager!
Charlie Hunnam (Biker Grove was nearly a soap 🤣).
Anna Friel, Jenna Coleman, Alex Fearns (who was played a horrible man in Eastenders and has been in Godzilla, Batman, Chernobyl and Andor ...)

IAmKerplunk · 28/11/2025 12:55

The actress who plays Kim Tate in Emmerdale did Bad Girls

HonoriaBulstrode · 28/11/2025 14:05

Gabrielle Glaister is probably best known now as Bob in Blackadder.

She was a Bernie doppelgänger in Corrie as well

PInkyStarfish · 28/11/2025 15:57

I can picture it now, Steven Spielberg discussing plans for a new film….

“And for the lead action man it’s a choice of Ben Affleck or Benny from Crosseoads…. “ 😕
