How do we know the extra welfare payments for multiple children will be spent on the children .

A genuine question really . I don’t begrudge the children and I’ll save my irk for the parents but how do we know the extra money will be used to support the children in the right way giving them a better start and turning them into these honerable citizens. It worries me that the kids with feckless parents are going to be given much more money but the parents spend it on themselves not the kids . Just because these parents have more money doesn’t mean they’ll use it responsibly or change the attitudes they may pass down .

Oh my god! Yes you do, at least own it!

I think this is exactly it. If people haven’t come from this background or worked in/adjacent to it, they don’t realise. I’m in a middle class bubble now and people who have always lived in that can’t comprehend.

What you say about lifted out of poverty ‘on paper’ is exactly it. It won’t help the children at all. Targeted support going directly to children would have been miles better. This is a waste of money and, even worse, this money could have actually done good things for children had it been spent in the right way. But putting it into free wraparound childcare, breakfast clubs, food for children etc would have taken a lot of time and effort. They’ve gone for a bribe in effect, and it won’t change outcomes for children

How are the children going to get shoes that way ?

You really want someone in government to be paid to analyse my food shop?
I went to Sainsbury's yesterday.
The chicken will be eaten by my daughter but not me because I don't eat chicken.
The bread will be eaten by all 3 of us (me, husband, daughter).
We bought some frozen cheesy bite things - daughter chose them for her to have but didn't like them so gave them to me to eat.
The milk.... again used by all 3 of us.
And so on.....
How would it be decided what was being spent "on my daughter"?
Should I be doing two separate food shops so I can prove it?
She doesn't actually drink much milk so "her" bottle would probably go off before it's finished.
🙄
(hypothetical as I don't get UC - just Child Benefit)

@Needmorelego , an analysis would be unworkable. Vouchers only exchangeable for certain goods would not.

think that’s what people are suggesting isn’t it?
would it not just be an extension of the Healthy Start card, so not difficult to run as it’s already in place,

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 27/11/2025 07:32

Really?

I'd assume for a strong economy you would want to encourage net contributors to breed and continue to discourage net recipients as statistically it will yield more future net contributors.

By 'net contributors' you mean the wealthier people.
By 'net recipients' you mean poor people.

Sickening right-wing drivel.
Do you think a nurse or bin collector or shop assistant is not a 'contributor' to society? Do you see the whole world and the people in it in terms of money?

Here is an idea - if we tax the assets and income of the wealthy and those 'in the middle', and re-distribute the money to the poor, then tax the no-longer poor on their new money, perhaps the no-longer-poor will then be 'net contributors'.

Ahfiddlesticks · 27/11/2025 13:54

Not teething issues - the scheme ran for years and years and the issues were the same throughout.

You cannot compel private companies to take vouchers.

@Ahfiddlesticks , I see. Perhaps they should have considered a collaboration with the supermarkets where those with the vouchers could have free delivery potentially for a small contribution from the government.

But when I was working full time as a single parent with 2 school age children I didnt need free wraparound care, or breakfast clubs.
I was working 3 (occasional 4) long days in a hospital with family providing care on those days. Wraparound care didn't start or finish at the right times. And the days I wasn't working I loved having time to have breakfast as a family.

Just because some parents on benefits are neglectful, doesnt mean we all are.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 27/11/2025 13:53

@Ahfiddlesticks , sounds like there were some teething issues which need addressing. It IS a very good idea.

"teething issues"
Healthy Start vouchers have been around for years.
Edit :
2006 was the start of paper vouchers.
2022 was the start of a "pre paid" card.
Before Healthy Start vouchers other schemes ("milk tokens") started during WW2.
Not a new system at all.

You sound like one of those dads paying maintenence wanting receipts to see where their money is being spent!

Change their attitudes? When I had my first child and DH and I were both working minimum wage full time jobs, we didnt have bad attitudes, we just didnt earn a lot. We even had the cheek to have a second child. And then a few years later when earning better, we had a third!

They are now adults and at university studying engineering degrees. Future tax payers!

To think you have better morals because you earn more money or happen to have inherited well, is hilarious!

But this is the problem - the "Healthy Start" vouchers already exist and some shops REFUSE TO TAKE THEM.

You're forgetting the the county also needs lots of low skilled poorly educated poorly paid people to do all the crap jobs the net contributers wouldn't dream of doing. I mean who's going to clean their house and look after their children?

I had these with my first because I was so young every supermarket took them they’re for milk and fruit/veg I saw a sign in an off licence saying they don’t accept them but they didn’t sell fruit veg or milk so why would they

The problem with giving companies incentives to accept the vouchers it just creates more barriers.
I was reading about the chaos in the USA with their versions (SNAP or WIC I forget which one... might be both) that sometimes you are only limited to buying specific brands.
So you can use your card to buy Brand A but not Brand B that your child simply likes the taste of better, or Brand C which is on special offer or even Brand D - the cheaper own brand version.
If Brand A is out of stock....well you can't have that food. Even if other versions are right there on the shelf.

Well that's different.
I wouldn't expect B+Q or Primark to accept them either.
But the little independent convenience/corner shop that's the only shop on a persons housing estate bloody well should.
But some don't. That's the problem.

Morrisons petrol station near me has been brought by an Indian family I assume it must be a more widespread thing and that’s what they mean. Unless that person lives in my town?

which would be god damn creepy. Mumsnet can’t come too close to real life 😂

Do you mean Morrisons have sold that particular station off and it will now be under a different name/franchise and the person owning it now is a foreigner?
So what?

I feel sorry for all the children born in 2017 who will have spend 9 years in poverty for the government to see they made a mistake.
Its all very well bringing it all back now but those children won’t get much out of knowing nobody before them had to go through it and nobody after them will but they had to be be used as guinea pigs through their only childhood to see how much they’d suffer.
