When Britons think of their King, what are things they appreciate or disapprove of?

Generally speaking, do Britons cherish him or not? I want to understand his likeness levels and whether they hold him dear to them even if they don’t necessarily like the monarchy as a concept.

You first.

I'm a Republican, so I don't need to go into what I think of the Monarchy on the whole.

As for Charles himself, he's a bit of a balloon, but somewhat less offensive than much of his family and the wider gaggle of hangers-on.

He didn't choose to be born into his situation. He was brought up by nannies, then sent to boarding school, and has been under intense scrutiny his whole life. He was not permitted to marry the woman he wanted to, but was shoved into a totally unsuitable relationship with a very immature and rather dim girl, who was considered the "right sort". He has spent all his life as the heir-in-waiting, without a significant role, and in the shadow of a highly successful and popular queen. I think he's tried his best under bloody miserable circumstances, and I hope he continues in good health for some years before William and Catherine are saddled with the thankless task, to give them quality time with each other and their children.

Why so many people on Mumsnet anti-monarchy or indifferent? Is it just because this is a generally left-wing site? I thought Brits were fiercely protective and emotionally bound to the monarchy hence why they were all so angry at Meghan for disrespecting their beloved Queen with the Oprah interview.

I don't find myself thinking about 'my' king at all, really. I think the monarchy should be abolished but I don't spend any time inside my head on it.

I used to like reading about Diana, and looking at her outfits, if that counts.

It's perfectly possible to not give a shit about the royals and also find Meghan quite irritating.

PluckyChancer · 26/11/2025 17:41

Ah another thinly disguised Meghan bashing thread. 🥸

Ah, there you are with Brits, I knew it wouldn’t be long.

Are you fiercely protective and emotionally bound, dear? Do you need a lotion for that?

Generally reflects attitudes in the wider UK. Latest figures are 58% supportive.

For a lot of people the issue isn't "The British Royal Family" as much as it's the concept of Monarchy itself. I genuinely don't really care all that much about the people, they're mostly dull and uninteresting, it's the entire anachronistic institution I want rid of.

AardvarkApricotAmethyst · 26/11/2025 18:19

If I think about him at all, it’s with mild surprise that we’ve got one.

MoonWoman69 · 26/11/2025 18:49

Since Diana died, I have zero interest in the RF. I'd happily see them gone. What actual purpose do they serve these days, other than rolling in gross over privilege and causing scandals?
The whole lot of them are an absolute waste of space and anyone who still "worships" them needs their head examining!

Well the Queen wasn't my beloved Queen and I have nothing against Meghan or Harry
I'm a republican and would get rid of the lot of hem personally.

What nationality are you, and why do you have such fixed expectations about what us Brits think about any given topic? We are not all 'so angry at Meghan', most of us couldn't give a toss about what that silly woman does.

By the way, you can be left-wing and a royalist, and I think most of us would rather have a monarchy than be saddled with a deranged fruitcake of a President.

No we aren't. But if it's such a good idea I'm happy to let other countries welcome the Monarchy and you can have the billions of pounds that the RF apparently generate. If they were to be crowdfunded I think the RF would be gone within the year. And they wouldn't be missed
