Abusive message from tradesperson?

Coloursyrue · 26/11/2025 16:56

Posted a job for people to quote on (posted on platform that is for this exact reason)

Someone selected they were interested, I asked them for a quote last night. This afternoon they sent me an abusive message saying how I’m a moron and didn’t post enough details about the job and how I’m lazy because I didn’t answer the door to them as they had put themselves out there to come and quote …

😳 we never even had a discussion about me providing more details I’m not an expert so I only included what I thought I needed to. We definitely never discussed him coming to my house.

Jesus, that’s very weird. Why would they just turn up at your home?

I would report this to the platform you listed the job on.

Definitely report out to the platform - get screenshots etc. The whole point of those things is to weed out the dodgy guys but in my experience they don't really do that.

Can you get word of mouth recommendations from a trusted local group etc?

Also why do you have to post your full address on there? That sounds dodgy itself. (Unless I've misunderstood and he hadn't actually tried to visit unannounced).

I don’t think I did post my address … I definitely had to put my postcode as I guess they’d need to see the rough distance it is for quoting. But I didn’t think they’d see a full address. I’m not sure if he’s lying … I have no idea why he would but to say I’m lazy for not answering the door ..

Really weird for them to say that if they didn't have your address and/or didn't know if you'd be at home.
I have heard of some tradesmen getting arsey because some platforms require them to pay a fee to be able to quote for each job. But this guy just sounds unhinged.

He had to pay as he told me was going to demand his money back … like I don’t have his money 😳

Is it me or does that sound like he turned up at my house and I didn’t answer the door? He’s now gone back on this saying he didn’t and he just knows what area I’m in.

The “crazy rant” he’s referring to, is basically I asked for a quote and he sent me a long list of reasons of why he wouldn’t do the job. It was bizarre. Like cool don’t do the job but I don’t need a long list of why, when actually some were questions.

I had very similar. Asked for quotes - a guy replied asking a couple of questions, and I asked a couple of questions back (just in terms of which of two methods he’d use to fix the issue, nothing extensive). He didn’t come to the house to quote.

I didn’t go with him and he sent me a long message about how I was a “time wasting bastard” who only used him to pick his brains and get his “expertise” on how the job should be done.

I mean, isn’t quoting for jobs a fairly standard part of his working week?? He must be in a constant state of anger if being turned down for a job he sent 3 emails about makes him this pissed off.

PedantsOfDestiny · 26/11/2025 17:54

Nutjob. Sorry you are going through this op - I'd be a bit upset but at least he doesn't actually know where you live. Keep an eye out for anyone recommending him locally and let whoever is asking know about this.

RollOnSunshine · 26/11/2025 17:55

Do you have any local community Facebook groups? These are generally pretty good at getting recomendations from if friends and family cannot help.

I’m honestly struggling to get anyone to do the job. It’s not a big job, but I think it’s going to be a difficult one. I’ve asked on Facebook and people get recommended, I reach out and hear nothing.

What's the job and what type of tradesperson are you asking for quotes?

IsntItDarkOut · 26/11/2025 21:18

My BIL is in the ‘trade’ and sometimes he seems completely unhinged.
He definitely thinks if you get him to do a quote you should just accept it and for him to do it, no question. He did a quote for some friends of mine, clearly they were starting out and their place was a mess and they didn’t have much money. Quote was massive. He asked me for months why they didn’t go through. Saying ‘they couldn’t afford it’ wasn’t a good enough answer.
He did a job for someone we know, fucked it up and left it unfinished because he got another job. One of their neighbours had been interested in employing him, but quite rightly lost interest. He asked many times why they hadn’t been in touch and for friend to ask them.
Hes worse if he has to employ someone else, basically thinks they should do it for free. Just seems to live in a totally different world.

Yep .. and the usual quoting so high so you’ll either say no (as they don’t want the job) or if you say yes then the profit is a high margin,
