Are period knickers worth buying? Do you use them?

Instead of using pads or tampons, I thought I would try period knickers. However, I'm a bit wary of buying unknown brands.

Any recommendations? Are they good for heavier flows? Easy to wash?

Thanks

They're fab, I rarely have periods and when I do they're light for which I am thankful. So nice to have a variety of shapes and sizes for different flows. I know they don't suit everyone, but I usually get away with the thong fit.

Beekman · 25/11/2025 00:53

I’m in peri and my periods are rather unpredictable so am thinking of purchasing some but how do you launder them?

Absolutely not, and will never use them. I refuse to go back to the dark ages and use stuff that creates far more work for me. If they cannot be thrown in the washing machine straight away, and tumble-dried later, then I'm out.

Hell will freeze over before I start faffing with bloody knickers, rinsing old blood and bits by hand (not gross at all), then washing them in the machine, then hanging them out and waiting for them to dry. Ridiculous, it's 2025, not the 16th century.

Pad, take off, wrap, throw out, put a new one in, job done.

Goodness me!

I chuck mine in an old nappy bucket until my period is finished and I need to wash them. I put them on a cold 15 min rinse cycle, then a "proper" wash but still a low temp. Stick them in the airing cupboard and they are dry the next day.

Its no more faff than emptying the bathroom bin!

I couldn’t cope with the smell of blood🤢 threw mine away

Checknotmymate · 25/11/2025 07:15

I liked them but have found myself veering back to pads, reusable and disposable. I don't really like the sensory tightness of them and find they don't absorb heavy flow well.

It's worth noting that they are supposed to only last 12-36 cycles. They will last more but the PUL inside goes.

I've also had to strip wash mine a few times because the cold washing doesnt cut it over time.

OtterlyAstounding · 25/11/2025 07:25

I've used them a few times but don't like them - they feel too tight and bulky. But then I also can't stand the feeling of pads. Tampons for me!

But my daughter uses them without problems with a pad, as a back up to avoid leaks, although on her lightest days she forgoes pads. She loves them. They're Libra brand - I'm not sure if that's available in the UK, but they're quite affordable and seem very absorbent, and have lasted more than the recommended washes!

Ibizaonmymind · 25/11/2025 07:34

I love them too. I’ve got modibodi, M&S and next. I need to replace them though as I’ve lost weight so they’re a bit baggy and they need to be snug.

I’ve got some light flow just in case ones when I’m due on or my period is finishing.
I wear heavy the rest of my period. If I’m at work on heavy days then I’ll wear a pad too and occasionally a tampon but very rarely and I probably don’t need to.

No leaks or sleeping on a towel at night either, they’re brilliant.

user765378 · 25/11/2025 07:46

wuka. Great quality, never had a leak

Moltenpink · 25/11/2025 07:50

Uniqlo do some amazing ones, they are expensive but I’ve never had a leak

Wishihadanalgorithm · 25/11/2025 07:54

I’ve got DD Wuka and they’re really good. One pair in the day and one at night.

Wish I could have used them when I was younger.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 25/11/2025 07:57

I use the M&S ones, have the full briefs for overnight and day 3 and the thongs for the rest of the time and they’re brilliant, I do use tampons as well but day 3 I flood every hour or so, these stop me having to change my jeans 4/5 times a day!

ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot · 25/11/2025 08:01

I used to leak through pads on my heavier nights. I have never leaked through my period pants. I do wear a cup as well on my heavy flow days.

Some might find it gross, but I don't do any faffing with washing. I just throw them in. I think it makes them less absorbent over time but they always come out clean. I've had them around years now and they are notably less good at "wicking" the blood away. But still no leaks.

Onefortheroad25 · 25/11/2025 08:03

I would like to try them too but can someone tell me what the point of them is if you are still wearing a pad?

For my daughter it's the added safety that even if she bleeds through her pad before she can get to a loo at school, the period pants will stop her from bleeding through her uniform too!
I don't like the feel of them but I've still got a couple of pairs I bought in order to try out, and if I'm having a very heavy day and know I won't be able to get to a loo quickly (a rare occurrence!) then I'll put up with the period pants as a back up to a tampon. They've saved me from embarrassment a few times.

Reassurance on heavier days.

Can I ask please does anyone use period pants for a slight bladder leak? I’m well past the stage of periods but wear a pad for the occasional drip. I buy supermarket bladder leak pads and I’m wondering if period pads would work.

I do now. I use the lightest Modibodi and they last the whole day with no smell.

I wash them around once a week-every 10 days and plonk them in the washing machine on a rinse cycle and then wash them cold with bio powder.

This . I rinsed by hand in the beginning but when decided that the rinse cycle in the washing machine works for this.

I wash them cold with bio, all done. No smell, no residue, nothing. Even DD manages in her uni accomodation.

But I did cloth nappies 18 years ago, period pants are nothing compared to explosive nappies.

mamagogo1 · 25/11/2025 08:32

modibodi have very heavy flow ones, also suitable for use if you get mild incontinence, I have the long line shorts for under dresses

pambeesleyhalpert · 25/11/2025 08:40

I bought some from MnS and I do really like them- I sized up but they’re still too tight so sometimes uncomfortable depending on the bloat!

They seem like a great idea but I worry about the PFAS even with bamboo ones, undisclosed silver and whatnot chemicals of them but maybe that's the same with sanitary products in general?

Isobel201 · 25/11/2025 10:39

I use M&S ones for incontience as well as periods, so use them all the time. I wouldn't say they took my flow of periods very well, especially the first day or two where the flow is very heavy. But once the flow settles down, they're okay.

I loved mine for the first year or so, as they are really comfortable and they’ve never leaked. They started to get smelly though. I wash them thoroughly, I’ve tried various things on the gusset (white vinegar, antibacterial laundry detergent) but they start to smell again as soon as they get any moisture on them. I think I’ll probably have to throw them away.

This happens if you use fabric softener. 90 degree wash with no detergent and a cup of white vinegar will sort it out.

pixiegirlishere · 25/11/2025 10:52

The m+s ones are great, really comfortable. I use them when I’m due on but I’m not hugely regular so they’re great for that. Never used them for mid-period but fine on first day.
