Taking stuff to the dump tomorrow. I haven’t started packing, I guess that it’s time to start packing. What else do I do?

It’s been a long time since I last moved so any advice/tips would be appreciated.

TIA

Buy a big multipack of boxes from amazon. Dedicate one room on each floor where the filled boxes will go. Label each box with what is in it and what the destination room is in the new place.

Then just fill boxes and buy more when you get low on them. Leave the stuff you regularly use to be packed last!

If you don't have time for too many dump runs and have a driveway hire a skip.

Edit: and good luck with the move, hope it goes well!

Make sure that you don't just have large boxes. Books weigh a ton when boxed up.

You can start boxing up summer clothes as you won't be wearing them for some time.

I love packing and see it as a great opportunity to have a thorough sort out.

I always start with the stuff that you don’t need like books, home decor and then move onto the kitchen, leaving out only a few bits we will use in the meantime. Each cupboard or drawer is then deep cleaned as they are emptied.

Are you using a removals company? If so I'd suggest asking for a quote for packing too.

I've moved house several times over a weekend on a low budget.
Ask for free boxes on Facebook market place. Utilise storage you already have.
I start top to top(loft) unless there's a garage then start there. Decluter is a great start. Ring charities that can collect larger items you don't want.

Have a moving in box for the new house (kettle, cups, toilet roll, bit of cleaning stuff, snacks, pj's, bedding or blow up bed oh and a few tools)

I don't particularly have anything valuable but things like jewelry, passports, keys, charges, electronic devices should travel on your person.

Bedroom :I used black bags over my clothes with hangers popping out the top, was easy just to pop into new wardrobe. Use suitcases aswell.

I could go on...Good luck!

I packed boxes with half books half clothes to make them easier to lift. Check with your moving company if you have to empty out all furniture, they moved bedside drawers with stuff in them when we moved recently!

Start with bin bags. Get rid of anything you don't need, won't fit, isn't useful. Then pack books, off season clothes, things you don't use day to day. Empty the attic now, don't leave it til last. Pack bedding, a weeks worth of clothes, kettle, mug and teabags at the very last moment.
It will be chaos, but it will be worth it.

get proper boxes on amazon or moving companies not ones from supermarket ( they are not strong enough) make sure you can lift and stack them. get a hand held tape dispenser for packing tape. make sure everything is labelled. I did t have time to sort and dump - i get distracted to easily- so I packed everything and sorted when I moved. there was a good few trips to charity shop and dump after - felt it was less pressurised. start in rooms you don't use and if can make sure one room complete before moved to next. clothes can go in black bags and suitcase. on day of moving have a small bag of change clothes toothbrush kettle and your bed duvet etc make bed as soon as move in. you will be so wrecked by end of day and delighted you made the bed. make sure pace your self aswell and don't tire yourself out

Boxes and laundry bags, a sharpy and lots of deep breaths ❤️

ThatBlueHedgehog · 24/11/2025 20:09

You can get boxes from storage places - particularly bigger ones. They also sell bubble wrap etc

I’m in the same boat, moving in two weeks, and you’ve got some cracking tips here! I started packing / clearing out a few weeks ago, and have been chipping away at it slowly, but need to step it up a gear now! Good luck with your move!

TheTowerAtMidnight · 24/11/2025 20:30

Buy three times as much brown parcel tape as you think you'll need. And go for the most expensive one, not the cheap stuff which is shite!
Also number every box and keep a list so you know generally what is in each one.

Distracteddistraction · 27/11/2025 15:12

If you can afford it pay for packing it cost us about an extra £500 to have the movers pack take down all the furniture like wardrobes and beds and rebuild the other end. I packed some stuff, but mainly made sure everything had been sorted out so we didn’t bring any clutter with us. Hands down the best money I’ve spent.

FlatPat · 27/11/2025 19:37

Thanks all. Lots of great ideas.
