Strange things that give you a kind of "ick" in everyday life

I don't mean getting the "ick" about a sexual or romantic partner. And I don't mean being put-off by things that are actually pretty grim. I mean random things that you inexplicably find a bit off-putting in everyday life.

For me, I get a kind of "ick" when I read other people talking about food on forums MN I honestly had no idea why. It's so odd, I really like reading food descriptions in books but in forums I find it really off-putting.

In the real-world, I also really hate opening other people's fridges. They always smell weird (different from my own). I have to hold my breath.

Using a hand dryer. I hate lifting my wet hands, taking 6 steps and blasting cold wet drips down my wrists. I just find it a sensory unpleasant experience, that takes far too long.

I much prefer a hand towel/tissue public loo, though understand they are not environmentally the best.

Hand driers are disgusting anyway, they pull air from the toilet and blow it all over your hands! No one would use one if they could see the filter on one of those things.

Moonflower12 · 23/11/2025 17:34

Anyone apart from a baby, drinking milk especially adults in a glass.

Havng a cold drink in a mug, and vice versa , a hot drink in glass, even those glass mugs.

Hand dryers leave your hands covered in more bacteria than before you washed them. I’ve seen a few videos of what the before and after swabs grow on a plate. I think I’d rather use those horrible towel dispenser things that you pull and the towel goes back inside 🤢

@Parsleyforme I used to have to replace these in my office when I was an apprentice. You only use the towel bit once, if you pull it it rolls itself onto another spool and then has to be replaced once it stops giving you a fresh part . It doesn't reuse a dirty bit unless it's stuck and doesn't move when you pull it down

manicpixieschemegirl · 23/11/2025 17:36

Hand dryers are also teeming with bacteria @ItsOnlyHobnobs and make your hands even dirtier than before you washed them.

For me, it’s when people talk about devouring books. It just makes me feel quite ill. The word adore elicits a similar reaction.

Sitting down on a seat that’s still warm from the previous user

Oh God, yes to this!!!

Stains on light grey jersey hoodies/ sweatshirts etc. I’m not sure why but they just always look particularly grim.

Overly gelled hair on men.

Spitting.

People dunking biscuits into tea

Hot drinks served in clear mugs - costa can fucking do one

TiredofLDN · 23/11/2025 17:40

Also the words “hot choc” and “wash it down” make me shudder.

Omg I thought it was just me!?!

AllPlayedOut · 23/11/2025 17:41

People who use the word “ick”.

ChasbutnotDave · 23/11/2025 17:46

People who wear flip flops instead of shoes, especially when it's raining/cold. In my day I'm sure people mainly just wore them for walking around swimming pools or for the beach.

Men wearing loafer type shoes and cropped trousers with no socks so you can see their ankles and part of their feet.

People who wear sunglasses on top of their heads, no idea why it annoys me but it does. Either wear them on your face or put them away if you don't need them on but I suppose they are useful for keeping hair off your face.

101Alsatians · 23/11/2025 17:47

Public toilets.
Leftover food and washing dishes after finishing eating.
Overly strict performative parenting.
Litter boxes.
Sneezing into hands without washing them.
People speaking loudly in restaurants or bossing waiting staff around.
Cling film.
Polystyrene.

StationManager · 23/11/2025 17:49

Ordinary people on the TV or radio. I don’t mind when they interview celebrities or ask experts for their opinion on things. It’s when they get ordinary people in the street on things like the news and the One Show and start asking them about things, like the economy or the royal family. I can’t stand it, I have to change the channel. DP thinks it’s hilarious.
Oddly, I don’t mind game shows or things like police interceptors with ordinary people on them.
People that phone up the radio are the absolute worst.

Men in skinny jeans.
Beards.
Dogs being treated like people.

Definitely dogs being treated as people, sleeping in humans beds, being fed from the table etc

abracadabra1980 · 23/11/2025 17:53

Middle aged men in lycra-the cycling crew-their stupid wrap around sunglasses and well, just everything rally. Always skinny and boney and look terribly uncool-only my humble opinion of course. Men who wear tracksuits all the time, unless playing sport, med with unkempt, greasy hair, smoking or vaping in any form and women of a certain age 'hello new neighbours' who are passive aggressive in their acquaintances.

Going into a gender neutral toilet straight after a man. I hate it. It really disgusts me. The last time I did it there was this absolutely massive poo in the bowl.

Me too - makes me feel very uncomfortable for some reason, even if it's been left tidy. There's always that potential for 'surprise' - seat up, unflushed loo, or seat down and wet.

HorrorFan81 · 23/11/2025 17:57

Men wearing shiny leather shoes and no socks. All I can think about is how gross and sweaty their feet must be. Even worse when they are wearing ankle length trousers and you can see their bare ankles 🤢

My husband

ItsInTheSingingOfAStreetCornerChoir · 23/11/2025 17:58

Adults who put their child’s dummy in their mouth 🤢🤢

SeaAndStars · 23/11/2025 18:01

Those socks over shoes things that lycra clad cyclists wear. Like cloven hooves.
The pictures in barber shop windows, especially any ear/nose waxing photos.
People talking into phones that they are holding horizontal like a piece of toast.
Vape stickers on bins.

Livpool · 23/11/2025 18:02

Beards - I like DH to be clean shaven, and he has agreed so far…
Men not wearing socks I.e. with trousers and loafers
Men in skinny jeans
Dogs in restaurants
Vegan ‘cheese’

HalfWayAroundTheLoop · 23/11/2025 17:30

That elf on the shelf bollocks. I don't know how anyone can be arsed with it.

Also people who are obsessed with getting freebies.

And Christmas eve boxes. What the hell is that all about, apart from making folk spend more money?

Yes ! I had to use a unisex loo area last night in a music venue. I inspected the seat VERY carefully before I sat down

AllPlayedOut · 23/11/2025 18:03

Also seeing people’s feet. Babies, toddlers or adults. It doesn’t matter, actually older babies and toddlers are even worse because their feet are like fleshy blocks and it really annoys me and makes me shudder.

WinoTime · 23/11/2025 18:04

One of my icks is people who blow on their food.

Either suffer the burn or wait until it’s cooler.
