Strange things that give you a kind of "ick" in everyday life

CariahMary · 23/11/2025 16:39

I don't mean getting the "ick" about a sexual or romantic partner. And I don't mean being put-off by things that are actually pretty grim. I mean random things that you inexplicably find a bit off-putting in everyday life.

For me, I get a kind of "ick" when I read other people talking about food on forums MN I honestly had no idea why. It's so odd, I really like reading food descriptions in books but in forums I find it really off-putting.

In the real-world, I also really hate opening other people's fridges. They always smell weird (different from my own). I have to hold my breath.

Dirty fingernails.
The boy in my class who farts and laughs at least five times a day.
Food bits in a sink
Hairy toes

I thought i was a bit odd for being repulsed by this! Turns out im not the only one.

Me too! Thought it was just me. I hate going into the bathroom after DP has cleaned his teeth. I’m fine cleaning my teeth but if I have to go back in too soon afterwards the smell makes me gag. It’s so odd.

GooGooMuckMuck · 24/11/2025 23:13

People using new ‘online meme’ colloquialisms, or however you phrase it, in casual talk, I have no idea what you’re on about!!

People vaping/ smoking.

And Christmas eve boxes. What the hell is that all about, apart from making folk spend more money?

I agree with Christmas Eve boxes and elf on the shelf. I’d like to put Christmas bedding in Room 101 too.

The way my husband eats crisps, not sure why 🤢

The smell of tomato ketchup even though I like to have it on things 🤢

Terrytheweasel · 24/11/2025 23:17

Glade plug in’s - especially the Christmas versions

Spookyspaghetti · 24/11/2025 23:18

Those new cars with front grills that look like a million spiders eyes. Someone down the road has one and it makes me feel ill to look at it. Think they are called Omoda.

tulippa · 24/11/2025 23:22

Adults eating pots of yogurt. Particularly if it is part of a packed lunch and they have brought their own spoon with them. I think it makes them look like a massive child and it weirds me out.

villanova · 24/11/2025 23:22

'Snotty' eggs, where the white isn't fully cooked; people slurping any drinks, particularly hot ones.

Christmas air fresheners full stop are a sickly stench

Omg, I love your list, and so identify with it! Thank you. Really made me laugh.

Using a hand dryer. I hate lifting my wet hands, taking 6 steps and blasting cold wet drips down my wrists. I just find it a sensory unpleasant experience, that takes far too long.

I much prefer a hand towel/tissue public loo, though understand they are not environmentally the best.

Me too! I now carry a flannel in my handbag for exactly this purpose

MinnieCauldwell · 24/11/2025 22:28

Me too, I got swim shoes

I hate wet hair, including my own. I hate to wash my hair, although I do do it, but I just hate strands of hair coming out in the shower or touching me. I think it is due to dirty swimming pool floors as a child. The city I grew up, the local pool floor in the locker/toilet area was almost a pool itself. Absolutely covered with hair and used plasters 🤢 It was like an assault course.

BeardofHagrid · 24/11/2025 23:37

The obsession around gyms and working out nowadays, it’s gone a bit cult-like? Especially when most film themselves working out and wear virtually nothing while doing it.

Vaguelyclassical · 24/11/2025 23:40

Random as a noun. Where the hell did that come from? It's not even used to mean, well, random (by chance) but is used to mean "unknown to me." I wince every time I hear or read it. Yeah, I know the language evolves, but this seems to me the kind of evolution that gave us the spiny anteater.

Autumntree · 24/11/2025 23:43

Any house where there's an animal

AInightingale · 24/11/2025 23:45

All those 'singing' and chanting rituals that people have - 'Happy Birthday', 'hip hip hooray', 'for he's a jolly good fellow' and all that shit. 'Auld Lang Syne' is cringey too but mostly people are completely pissed when they sing it so it's not too bad (unless you witness it sober).

Babyghirl · 24/11/2025 23:45

I hate crocs, but grown men wearing them turns me 🤢.

I hate this too.

The juxtaposition of these two comments in the thread gave me a bit of ick.

People sitting next to me crossing their legs so their foot is resting on their knee with the bottom of their shoe pointing towards me. Gives me the absolute ick and rage.

Spitting in the street

Men picking their noses at traffic lights

Men walking around in too tight jeans as if they've crapped themselves.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

TheCoralDeer · 25/11/2025 00:12

Saw my 'perfect' bf spit in the street....that huge ick was the end of that 'perfect' relationship.
