Strange things that give you a kind of "ick" in everyday life

CariahMary · 23/11/2025 16:39

I don't mean getting the "ick" about a sexual or romantic partner. And I don't mean being put-off by things that are actually pretty grim. I mean random things that you inexplicably find a bit off-putting in everyday life.

For me, I get a kind of "ick" when I read other people talking about food on forums MN I honestly had no idea why. It's so odd, I really like reading food descriptions in books but in forums I find it really off-putting.

In the real-world, I also really hate opening other people's fridges. They always smell weird (different from my own). I have to hold my breath.

I'm an Athiest, so I don't do Christmas at all, but I can't abide those Elf on a Shelf things - I find them utterly creepy. When I go into a shop and see them, I get the impression of being watched by dirty old men!

100%. Mother and Child Reunion 😔

I hate this too but it gives me cannibal vibes for some reason (even though the chicken isn't eating the egg, the human is) rather than mother/child.
Either way it should be outlawed Grin

Buxusmortus · 24/11/2025 14:32

Thong bikinis. Turns my stomach. No one's arse needs to be on full show, or is nice enough to be on show. Especially on a cold British beach when the wearer is playing volleyball and wearing a t shirt, looks like she's forgotten to put on her knickers.
The thought of thong knickers turns my stomach too but at least I don't have to see them.

coxesorangepippin · 24/11/2025 14:57

People saying 'cod fish'

Adding the word 'fish' is just unnecessary to the word 'cod', because it is fish

People who have sore throats and are talking. Either cough and clear it, or shut up. I have to turn the channel if Sean Dyche is being interviewed. Which is challenging given I live in a house of Nottingham Forest fans.

Gen Z influencers who live alone and post reels about their morning routines and how they get up at 5 am and head off to the gym after just applying some moisturizer, then they come back, make a collegen smoothie, take their vitamins,.make some eggs, eat their eggs while looking out at the London skyline from their high rise flat, then have a shower and do a 25 step skin care routine. The whole thing annoys me.

Vapers in public. They stand out to me because I'm instantly drawn to our ridiculous they look.

Vape shops. They need to be destroyed and removed from the high street.

Those cheap clothes shops which have racks and racks of £5 clothes, usually with techno music playing.

Those overpriced Dessert Shops with the neon pink signage, and the people who go there.

Men who do the school run that look like they've just rolled out of bed - they usually wear tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie and you can tell they havent showered. Linked to this - men who wear sliders or flip flops on the school run.

I hate looking at drivers while I'm waiting to cross the road. I can't stand the thought of making eye contact with any of them. I look in the opposite direction or down to the ground, glancing up once in a while to check if there's a gap to cross yet.

I physically wince when I hear Sean Dyche speak.

I remember a couple of years ago hearing a commentator say that Dyche wasn't present at a game because he had flu, and I thought 'Christ, given what he sounds like day to day, what the fuck does he sound like now he's got a sore throat?'

people outside my immediate family using my toilet

No, thank God.

People putting their suitcases straight onto the bed, even if it's a hotel bed. Or even worse, jumping onto the bed to lie down with their shoes on.

The absolute worst is at the end of I'm A Celebrity where they show the contestants going to their hotel after they've been evicted from the jungle and usually jumping straight onto the bed in their sweaty, filthy clothes. I know they've been living in a jungle for three weeks and are excited to sleep in a proper bed but for the love of god have a shower first!

I used to watch Four in a Bed (where they judge each other's B&Bs) and they almost all included a shot of someone launching themselves onto the bed, usually with their shoes on too. I'm guessing they were told to do it (in the same way as they must have been told to find a random hair, preferably curly...) as I don't think most adults leap onto a bed, but it was just silly and pointless.

Boudica70 · 24/11/2025 18:10

I think I've shuddered at nearly all of these!

Public swimming pools! Everything about them 🤢

And me, people soup.

Heyhoitsme · 24/11/2025 18:38

Runny eggs. Most people seem to like them but I can't look at someone eating them.

ThisSparklyHelper · 24/11/2025 18:39

People kissing, even just a peck on the lips, after eating any type of food.

Jennergirl · 24/11/2025 18:44

Vibram five finger shoes 🤢

LouiseK93 · 24/11/2025 18:51

When someone runs towards a bird to make it fly off and it doesnt move. Even flinch.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 23/11/2025 18:46

Peas and sweetcorn.

Me too. I was violently ill after visiting the fairground when I was about four and it was peas and sweetcorn that I brought up. I have never eaten them since, although processed peas are OK.

Vivianebrooksmatsumoto · 24/11/2025 18:56

Anything sporty or sports related worn outside of a gym. Jogging Bottoms, those white towelling sports socks, ugh, gym leggings just nope!!
Men with slip ons and no socks.
Those cheap leggings that might as well be see through.

sugarandcyanide · 24/11/2025 19:09

Touching raw chicken when it's all wet and slimy out of the packet. Other meat isn't so bad, it's mostly chicken I hate.

The sensation of seeds in jam or yoghurt in your mouth. Also the way orange pith feels in your mouth, sort of dry and fuzzy.

Also agree with men in shoes with no socks, noisy eaters and people who don't pick their feet up and shuffle around noisily.

I also have a really strange fear of big machinery. It makes me feel small and intimidated. The thought of being close to something like a huge tractor with wheels as tall as me makes my skin crawl and I have no idea why. 😂

Britishtrees · 24/11/2025 19:14

Unwashed hair or scalp smell-I don’t mean hair has to be washed every day, but if I can smell yours when I’m standing next to you I will gag.

Vivianebrooksmatsumoto · 24/11/2025 19:15

Some more I thought of...
Anyone off 'Love Island' ...I can never take anyone whose been on that show with any level or seriousness.
The 'waggy' 'don't do this' finger thing on insta or tiktok videos...it looks like you're telling off a 5 year old or a dog.
Coldplay. The live cam thing has to be the only interesting thing they've ever done.

KrystalStubbs · 24/11/2025 19:18

Other people's hair, I don't care what it looks like, I get the heebiejeebies if it comes anywhere near me!

People sniffing their food before eating it. Just get on with it.

Newspapers. Thank goodness people don't but them much now, I hate the feel & the smell of them, they seem really grubby to me.

Tabitha005 · 24/11/2025 19:23

Beardless men 😄 I honestly believe there’s not a man alive who’s NOT enhanced by a beard.

Having to use a toilet straight after a bloke.

Hard skin on feet - I try very hard never to look at anyone below the level of their knees in summer. I’m especially repulsed by hard skin on heels.

Anyone using words such as ‘hubby’, ‘holibobs’ or referring to their young child as ‘little man’ or ‘princess’.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 24/11/2025 19:26

People going on about dahl every five minutes.
Layering up.

And a recent one that absolutely drives me insane: going on about being on a diagnosis 'pathway'. Fuck off with your pathway towards misery and death. Why can't you just say you've been referred? I suppose it isn't dramatic enough.

Inwhitelights · 24/11/2025 19:27

Repeated throat clearing 🤢🤢

OriginalUsername2 · 24/11/2025 19:27

Fionasapples · 23/11/2025 17:25

Oh I agree, bits of hairs, plasters, slimy-looking bits on the floor of the changing rooms 🤢.
Have you seen the pool party episode of Motherland?

I used to just about ignore the plasters and hair bands but the last time I went a boy sneezed underwater (I was underwater) and I’ve never been back 🤢 Ruined forever!

Inwhitelights · 24/11/2025 19:30

As with the big fake eyelash trend and lip filler tend… all the girls who have the same French manicure or white toenails 🤢🤢🤢
