Second hand lego sets on eBay can be quite reasonable. We’ve bought loads for DS over the years, usually with all the pieces and at half the regular price or less.

if not there’s loads of Lego dupes out there now, on Amazon/ in toy shops etc.

I've bought second hand as well

If you buy second hand sets and any pieces are missing you can ask Lego to send them to you for a few pence.

Another saying eBay- I had to wash thousands of pieces in the sink and dry them without anyone seeing but it cost practically nothing!! Thinking of buying knee though- there’s some decent deals on it in our local toy shop

Bricklink will have bargains of real Lego. Ali express will have non-lego sets much cheaper but the quality will be lower.

Needmorelego · 22/11/2025 23:22

What can you afford?
I am a massive Lego fan (see my user name) but I very rarely go above £40 or £50 for a set.
I really like the Creator 3 in 1 sets that are usually about £25.

Kpo58 · 22/11/2025 23:23

If he's not bothered in the model after it's built, then you could get him one of those Lego subscriptions where you borrow Lego sets and send them back once built.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 22/11/2025 23:30

I'd rather you bought me a smaller set of genuine Lego (used is fine) than anything else.

WafflePlusWord · 22/11/2025 23:34

Roller coaster marble runs are cool. Not sure if they’re cheaper though.

Reification · 22/11/2025 23:41

DD always buys her DP BlueBrixx (I think that's the right spelling) sets and they both seem happy with the quality.

ohfourfoxache · 22/11/2025 23:49

God I would be so tempted to get a load of flat packed furniture 🤣

DoAWheelie · 22/11/2025 23:53

I like lego but I also get a lot of fun out of those wooden model sets where you pop out the pieces and slot everything together. It scratches the same itch for me.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2025 23:55

There is a library thing you can sign up too and you can exchange sets when they are done. Could you get a subscription to that instead?

yoshiblue · 23/11/2025 00:11

Large Lego sets are very expensive, but there are gems to be found. Look up Lego Gameboy, Arcade Machine, Stranger Things Brickheadz, smaller Star Wars Millenium Falcon. All under £50.

yoshiblue · 23/11/2025 00:36

Also 3 in 1 Creator - Camera £18.

@DoAWheelie What's the name please or link.

I was thinking something not Lego to be honest for a change and cheaper

When you like Lego (or anything like that) and someone buys the knock off version it’s sooooo disappointing

I would just get the set you can afford

Latenightreader · 23/11/2025 07:16

I love the rolife room sets - I have two book shop/libraries and a detective agency (the latter might be a different brand) and am planning to buy the garage workshop next. Keeps me busy for ages!

My Dad really enjoyed a pop out London Bridge set which was only a couple of hours, but more complex sets are available.

kersh33 · 23/11/2025 07:17

I would maybe suggest something like Kapla. It’s freeform and takes a little while to get the hang of in terms of the big builds but it’s fairly infinite in terms of possibilities.

Whyherewego · 23/11/2025 07:19

I would echo PP. Don't get an alternative lego.

If you want to get him something else then make it completely different like an airfix model or something

CheeseWisely · 23/11/2025 07:22

I like Lego although I’m choosy about the sets I buy as we don’t have the display space so I get things that I’m happy to take apart and build again in the future (flower bouquets that I can change over every now and then , some Christmas village bits). I’d be disappointed with an alternative to be honest.

Thanks for the link above to a Lego Library, I’m going to look into it.
