What about an airfix model or those boat in a bottle kits? They always look pretty cool and time consuming.

ednaclouda · 23/11/2025 07:43

Blimey ive just looked it up 270.00 for a helicopter jeez You're right its v pricey
the orchids and the bonsai are gorg though

purpleygrey · 23/11/2025 07:45

I don’t think any of the dupe Lego is anywhere near the quality of proper Lego.
Best to buy either smaller Lego sets or second had sets.

@DoAWheelie What's the name please or link.

I was thinking something not Lego to be honest for a change and cheaper

Just type wooden model kit into amazon or something. It's not one specific brand that make them. I've seen thousands of different ones over the years. Home Bargain sometimes sell them, so does IKEA.

@Needmorelego

This is for my husband not son btw
.
Any recs on something to last a good few hours over Xmas ? I got him r2d2 and he built very fast !

I am 50.
I don't need a Lego set that says 18+ on the box and costs £100s to build to LOVE Lego and be obsessed with it.
The last few sets I have bought for myself are mostly the Creator 3 in 1 ones.
I bought the cat and the flamingo (both about £25 ish each) although I built the alternative builds of pigeon and parrot.
This year I have also had the City camper van (£25 ish).
I also absolutely love treating myself to the little polybags (a website called Brickabrac sells some at 3 for £10) and the small classic sets (just mixed bricks).
I currently have waiting to build the smallest classic set available in the shops (£9.99 but I got it on special for £7.20) and 3 Polybags including a Santa one and I plan to make some kind of Christmas decoration out of them.
You don't need to spend £100s to love Lego.
Even on your husband 😂
(He needs to learn how to MOC - "my own creation". Take the bricks you have and build ANYTHING)

Gettingbysomehow · 23/11/2025 09:36

3D puzzles or book nook kits.

Needmorelego · 23/11/2025 09:37

@Zevitevitchofcrimas if you want to keep him occupied for several hours then seriously get a couple of the Creator 3 in 1 sets.
He can build the main model of each. Then take apart and build the first alternative. And then the same with the second alternative.
So that's 6 builds in total to keep him busy.
Then take all the pieces from both sets and build whatever his mind comes up with.
That's the point of Lego 😁

AyeOopDuck · 23/11/2025 09:44

For lovers of Lego I recommend this shop local to me.

They sell secondhand sets that they build and guarantee all bricks are there before selling. They also sell loose bricks and the little people individually.

I have bought a couple of new sets in here as gifts but it’s a place very much for serious enthusiasts. They do sell stuff online.it was great seeing a new and independent shop open a couple of years ago as our little town like many has a lot of empty shops.

Welcome | BarnDawg Store

BarnDawg Store is an independent toy store specializing exclusively in building blocks.

Airfix kits are fun. Bit more challenging than lego

ChubbyPuffling · 23/11/2025 09:46

I am a lego fan, and am now also doing wooden click together kits - Rolife book nooks and have one coming for Xmas that is a bit more advanced model with music and movement. The ones I do are in the £30 to £60 range and always have black Friday offers.

The thing with Airfix is you have to wait for the glue and paint to dry so they aren't a Christmas afternoon activity but one over several days.

@Needmorelego I was looking at the transformer yellow bumble bee car and transformer creator set but there doesn't look like many bricks it's hard to tell but it looked like he would do that in two hours

Then he takes it apart and builds something else.....

LostMySocks · 23/11/2025 09:50

There is a lot of Lego on offer at this time of year.
Argos usually has deals for Black Friday. If you're near a big Tesco or Sainsbury's they have regular sales. We have a family of Lego lovers and I buy when I see a deal ready for next event.
For Amazon check that purchases direct from Amazon as there are a lot of fakes out there. Fakes as in branded as a genuine Lego product but copies with lower quality bricks, stickers and instructions. DS spotted one that wed bought as genuine as bricks felt wrong. Luckily Amazon refunded and we found similar elsewhere

Tryingatleast · 22/11/2025 23:21

Another saying eBay- I had to wash thousands of pieces in the sink and dry them without anyone seeing but it cost practically nothing!! Thinking of buying knee though- there’s some decent deals on it in our local toy shop

i wash second hand Lego in the washing machine. Put it in a pillowcase and tie it with a hair band. Nobody has time to
hand wash Lego 🤣

A friend suggested this website to me as my dp has a similar issue. Not used it yet but might be an option . It’s like a lego library https://www.brickborrow.com/plans-pricing

This!

I've had a subscription for about a year. I pay £15 a month and then it's a few quid for delivery per set.

You pick a set, build it, keep it for as long as you want, then break it back down again and send it back. Once they've had it back you can pick a new one. I usually get through about 2 or 3 sets a month. Occasionally there's the odd missing piece but it's never been something that's integral to the build, and I can usually sub in a bit off one of my other sets until I send it back.

It's solved two problems for me. One, it saves a fortune on actually buying Lego, and two, I don't have to worry about finding the space to display it anywhere. It's only really the building of it that I care about, so this is perfect.

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 23/11/2025 10:34

@ChubbyPuffling

I've seen book nooks and think they look stunning so I was thinking of this also and I can selfishly enjoy it

I'd get him to 'build' the roast dinner with trimmings and put my feet up.

Ershin · 23/11/2025 11:13

We've recently just got a new kitten 3 weeks ago, we've got 2 older cats at 11yrs old, we couldn't do the keeping separate as no spare rooms. One cat ignores kitten unless too close in kitchen, kitten ignores her, the other cat will tolerate kitten as long as he doesn't move, will go over and smell n head bump but soon as kitten moves she just lands out at him, tried to keep separate litter trays but the two just use each others, and same with the food, treats I do give separate as kitten can't have cat treats yet. Kitten is my sons and the cat is mine, cat sleeps on me n kitten is in same bed with my son, they are fine then, don't seem to bother one another because kitten isn't moving.

Ershin · 23/11/2025 11:15

It is slowly better from beginning, so hopefully they will accept one another in time

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 23/11/2025 11:24

@Shedmistress he already does 😚

For wooden models, companies my husband buys from are UGears, ROKR and Rolife. You can also get similar in metal from Piececool.
