Does anyone use a humidifier?

I've just bought a humidifier off amazon as I've been struggling with dry eyes/nose and now I've got a god awful sinus infection. I'm not sure what type of water to use as it says ideally distilled water but we don't have any of that and it's expensive to buy regularly. Can you just use boiled water or water straight from the tap? Google says you can but it's not ideal so wanted some real life answers from people who actually use them.

I've also got a neilmed neti pot for the sinuses, which I'm waiting to use with cooled boiled water. Delightful.

I had one briefly. I used tap water. However it ruined my paintwork so stopped using it.

Tap water fine, used for kids back when winter coughs were prevalent.

I think if you are in a hard water area tap water would not be a good idea. I don't have a humidifier but I put shallow bowls of water on the radiator in my home office to prevent dry air. We are in a very soft water area and even here it leaves deposits in the bowls when dried out.
