I had Twinkle when I was little, then I think magazines called Tracy and Jinty.
Then Jackie, Patches and Blue Jeans.
Then Smash Hits & Just 17, then NME, Record Mirror and Viz 😀

Early teen: Sugar, Bliss J17
Late teen/20s: Vogue, Marie Claire, Cosmo

Tamfs · 22/11/2025 20:28

I did my work experience at J17, such a let down! I bunked off to lose my virginity, so I think I was quite on brand.

RecordBreakers · 22/11/2025 20:45

'buy' - Shoot (a football magazine)
'read other people's' - Jackie, Smash Hits, Radio Times Grin , Beano, Dandy if you are counting comics too.

UnderThePressure · 22/11/2025 20:46

Fast Forward or Look In when I was younger, then Select, Raw, Kerrang and NME as a teen.

Myoldbear · 22/11/2025 20:48

So surprised no one else got Debbie, unless I haven't read the thread properly

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 22/11/2025 20:53

The one I miss the most is Melody Maker. I discovered so many good bands on its pages in the 80s and 90s.

TroysMammy · 22/11/2025 20:53

Jackie then Smash Hits.

Allthebeernoidea · 22/11/2025 20:54

Whizzer and Chips. I only remember Sid's Snake from it.

Thejackinthebox · 22/11/2025 20:58

When I was little it was Twinkle.
Then Shout as a teenager.

TeenageSu1cideDontDoit · 22/11/2025 21:02

Just17, Mizz, Smash Hits, More.

MsJJones · 22/11/2025 21:07

I’ve always been a huge fan of magazines and have read most of the ones mentioned so far. Earliest was Twinkle and I think Judy. Then SH, J17 and Mizz. I went through a phase of carrying around a copy of Cosmo as a young teen but it was really for show as fashion magazines are my least favourite. I liked Company, more! and also remember Minx as a favourite - it felt different.

As an adult I went off celebrity gossip and my guilty pleasure is now real-life magazines like Take a Break/That’s Life etc.

My DC love a magazine as a treat especially for a journey. DS has a Beano subscription and the occasional Lego mag and DD likes the Frozen/CBeebies type.

KimHwn · 22/11/2025 21:09

Position of the Fortnight was in More, plus an agony aunt (or uncle) that was all about sex. I learned more about sex from that magazine than I ever did at school! Looking back, it was all a bit silly and unnecessarily gratuitous- I reckon they knew full well that most of their readership were 13-year-old virgins who had no practical reason to have to learn the reverse cowboy!

I spent years buying magazines very regularly.
First it was live and kicking and smash hits mostly for the song lyrics and posters.

Then mizz, sugar and just seventeen

Before moving onto more magazine and then finally cosmo, closer and heat and the occasional NME.

I miss them now!

Same here, I used to spend a fortune on them!

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/11/2025 23:03

Kid: Fast Forward, Smash Hits
Tween/Teen: Big, Shout, Sugar, Bliss

I'd totally forgotten about Big and Shout. Sugar and Bliss were my favourites.
