How many people have you lived with throughout your life and how many at the same time?

Family/partners/housemates etc.

And did you like a houseful or not.

I've lived with 13 different people at different times.

The most at once was 3 but my dad was one of 14 in one house at one point.

I love living alone now 😊

Total 16.

I had 4 flatmates for one year at uni, but then moved out when I got a council house as a single mum. So only had to flat share for that one year. The rest of the time I've only shared with family (ie parents and siblings growing up, or DH and my own dcs as an adult). Most people I know my age have had to have multiple flatshares (I'm in London where people houseshare even on high incomes, into their 40s).

I live in a family of 5 now and that's a nice number, it's busy but we have a 4 bed house so there's space for everyone.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 22/11/2025 19:20

Ooo tricky one to work out at times, and mine isn’t very exciting anyway!
I think it’s 20. Most at any one time was, I believe, 8 or 9, I can’t remember the timelines exactly of siblings partners/friends who lived with us in the family home. Given the choice, I’d have 4 or 5 children so I must’ve thoroughly enjoyed it all. We did (well, mother still does with a couple of my siblings) live in an enormous old farmhouse though so space was never an issue, that makes all the difference I expect.

4 siblings
2 siblings’ partners at one point or other
3 siblings’ friends when they were down on their luck
2 parents
2 step parents
3 step siblings v briefly
1 ex boyfriend
My now husband
2 kids!

Echobelly · 22/11/2025 19:23

At university I lived in a student house with 23 other people - it was a former old folks' home! My housemates were pretty boring on the whole but tbh, with 23 other people that was probably for the best.

I've been privileged that other than living with my own family as a kid and as a parent, I've never shared with more than one adult.

NerrSnerr · 22/11/2025 19:35

I’ll try and work it out

mum, dad, brother and sister 4

step dad and brother in law 2

university 1st year 5
university 2nd year 3
university 3rd year 5

husband and children 3

22 people.

NerrSnerr · 22/11/2025 19:36

Oh hang on, shared house after uni 4

So 26 people.

MsWilmottsGhost · 22/11/2025 19:45

I have to think about this....

Parents and siblings
XP1 and his 2 Lodgers
Sofa surfing at friends and XP2's
XP3 and his parents
Student halls with 5 others
House share of 4
Flatshare of 4
House share of 4
As a lodger with a family of 6
DH (then DP) and his parents
DH only (bliss!)
DH and DC and DDog 😊

Sometimes I daydream of living on my own in a tiny little cabin or a houseboat..

Bamboozled5 · 22/11/2025 19:54

Mum,Dad and brother
2 flatmates at uni
3 other flatmates on houseboat

IceIceSlippyIce · 22/11/2025 20:04

SouthernNights59 · 22/11/2025 20:29

My parents, my exDH, and at one stage I lived with my friend, her husband, and young son during the week. So six in total, and three at one time.

I have lived alone for most of my life however, and love it.

PodMom · 22/11/2025 20:31

Parents and sibling
13 different house mates throughout uni
4 people when I had a live in job
lodger
ex
dh and dd

24 in total

NancyJoan · 22/11/2025 20:38

12, I think. Never did a house share, and no siblings, which keeps the numbers low ish.

Did go to boarding school, so have done fair bit of bathroom/bedroom sharing and never wish to do so again.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/11/2025 20:48

Pre marriage - me plus 4. Parents and 2 sisters.
Post marriage - me plus 3. Me, DH and 2 dds.

Didn't live away from home for uni or with anyone else at any time.

trainedopossum · 22/11/2025 20:52

More than 30 I think, if I include grandparents, parents, stepparents, stepsisters, boyfriends, husbands (2, not at one time 😀) and flatmates.

In my mid-20s I lived in a communal house with 14-16 people. We cooked, shopped and cleaned on a rota so I learned how to cook big meals and wash up quickly and efficiently. Later I shared a three bedroom flat in central London with six other women, which was great.

I’m very introverted (probably moreso now than when younger) and now live with DH and no one else, which I like. I did enjoy living with others and had mostly good experiences.

Axlcat · 22/11/2025 20:58

Just counted - 25! Didn’t go to uni but a few shared houses and one rock band!

FellowSuffereroftheAbsurd · 22/11/2025 21:08

Interesting to think on...

As a child:
Parents plus two siblings
My father had two girlfriends when I was a teen who slept over a weekend here or there, but I wouldn't say either lived in the same house. He moved in with the second after I left home.

Maternal grandparents who I lived with my siblings and at times my mother

Paternal grandparents with my siblings + paternal aunt + I think for a time I lived there with some other cousins, but I'm not sure. That time is hazy.

As an adult:
Inlaws + husband
Husband + 4 kids
2 lodgers with husband and three kids
1 lodger with husband and four kids

So 19 people I'm certain on, with the largest house size I'm sure of is 7 including me.

I’d also be interested to know how many of those people you’ve lived with are you still in contact with?

7 out of 19, though 1 person is very occasional email contact; however, 4 of those I was in contact with up until they died and everyone in the child category aren't in the same country.

PortSalutPlease · 22/11/2025 21:18

I mean, I went to boarding school so hundreds!

Outside of school, between my massive family, uni and early adult houseshares, then a couple of LTRs and my now family - about 40?

Still in contact with all my family although some are no longer with us. 2 from boarding school, 2 of my uni flatmates, I’m Facebook friends with 4 or 5 people I house shared with but we are not in touch really anymore. 1 of my exes is still a good friend.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/11/2025 21:24

6 people in total
0-20 mum,dad and db
23-32 exH
32-34 Dh
34- present dh and ds

PracticalPixie · 22/11/2025 21:27

I grew up in a family if five, so that's 4 to begin with. Then I lived in student halls with I think 14 other students, so 18. Moved out with three friends from halls, but I won't count them again.

Next year I was with five different students so that's 25. Then did a year abroad and lived with quite a lot of students. I'd guess about 15, so 40. Then back to university for final year where I lived with three other girls, so 43, then moved out with now dh and we are a family of five, so 48!

Fifthtimelucky · 22/11/2025 21:47

Excluding student years:

5 as a child (parents and 3 siblings)
3 relatives who I lived with for 1 month when I first moved to London)
10 flatmates in various shared houses/flats in London (3 different locations and never more than 3 at a time.
3 (husband and 2 children)

So 21 altogether, or 18 if you don’t count the month with relatives

Pollqueen · 22/11/2025 21:50

Lots. I was at boarding school for several years then many flatmates and uni mates in my younger years and then family and then various DC have come back at times with DGC. Now just DP and I

OttersMayHaveShifted · 22/11/2025 21:51

16, I think, in total. The most was 3 (not including me) and that was my parents and sibling, and then much later dh and 2dc. I don't think I'd ever have liked living in a flatshare with lots of people.

WinterBerry40 · 22/11/2025 21:55

Mum & Dad , husband , 2 children , and 2nd husband so in total 6 .

WanderlustMom · 22/11/2025 21:57

Home - parents, me + 3 siblings

Ex boyfriends moms house - me, him + his mom

Ex boyfriends dad’s house - me, him + his dad

My own home as a single mother - me + my DS

Now - me, my DS and my partner

So 10 different people total, 11 when my baby girl arrives :)
