I keep seeing these advertised for cleaning retainers. They seem quite expensive, I wondered if anyone has one and if they are any good?

Thanks 😊

I have one, it’s not worth it.

Firstly I bought it from Boots who sent mine in bunged up/dirty retail packaging so it didn’t feel worth the £90 cost. Did not feel premium.

But beyond that, I just don’t really need it or use it. Rinsing my mouthguard under the sink provides the same results. It doesn’t clean any better, and it’s a bit of a faff because the plug socket doesn’t work in UK shaver sockets. So I’d have to leave it in my kitchen, living room, bedroom or wherever which feels a bit gross for a dental hygiene product. That’s a fatal flaw imo, they need to make it compatible with bathroom sockets.

I keep mine in my bathroom so basically just use it as fancy mouthguard storage ie unplugged. Occasionally I’ll bring the whole thing in another room to actually plug it in and use it, but tbh I’m fine just rinsing the mouthguard under the sink on a daily basis. Plus you have ongoing costs when you use it eg the tablets, so it feels like one of those gimmicky subscription things as opposed to something worth it.

Thanks, that's helpful to know 👍

DC got one free as part of their Invisalign treatment package. I've used it on and off for my retainers and mouthguard. I find if you use it daily and consistently and with the proper branded cleaning tabs it does keep the scale off. But as soon as you forget, it's pointless. It can't do a proper deep clean like the sonic bath thing at the dentist, plus the tabs are very pricey and as pp says you can't plug it in in the bathroom rendering it next to useless as a bathroom appliance! Ours sits on a kitchen shelf gathering dust.

So I only use a mouth guard for teeth grinding and therefore only wear it to sleep in, after brushing my teeth.

None of my previous mouth guards before my dental pod got gross or scaled or discoloured- just thinner in areas where I was more likely to grind my teeth, if that makes sense. So I’m fine just giving it a rinse daily, then say a weekly clean with the zima or denture tablets.

Thank you. Sounds like it's not worth it

I have this and think it’s great. Got it when I was doing Invisalign and my trays were always super super clear and now use it daily for retainers. Use it with a retainer bright tablet and trays are so clean! I can really tell when I’m away and don’t take it with me and my retainers just don’t look or feel as clear. Also double usage as a jewellery cleaner 😂
