Any opticians out there?

Hi, my DD is 12 and has been wearing glasses for short sightedness for a few years now. She also has always had a bit of an astigmatism. Her prescription for the myopia went from -0.5 to -1.5 and -0.5 to -1.75 in a year so they recommended myopic management glasses, which she's been wearing for a year.

Hey big brother is also using myopic management glasses and it seems to have slowed down his prescription changes. Their dad and I both have strong prescriptions (-5.5 ish).

However, when I took DD to the opticians this week, they said she's not short sighted at all, just really astigmatic. Her new prescription is SPH 0.0/0.0 CYL -1.5/-2.5 AXIS 5.0/175

I'm confused! How can she not be short sighted any more? Or was her prescription wrong before? Or could it be wrong now?

Thanks!

@Helpmechooseausername
Did you ever find out the reason for this?

Helpmechooseausername · 25/02/2026 20:02

Nope! I have to assume that her prescription is right, and was right before, because she can see well with her new glasses and could see well when she first got her old glasses!

You Could go back and ask for a second opinion or go to a different place altogether. Boots said my son was fine despite having headaches a lot and always squinting. Vision express about a month later and sure enough needed glasses. I myself just got my first pair of glasses and I don’t think the prescription is right so I’m giving it another week then going back for them to check it.

@Helpmechooseausername
Was it at the same opticians with the same optom?

Helpmechooseausername · 26/02/2026 14:17

Same opticians, different option...
