Help, dyed hair orange before sons christening!

OrangeITellYou · 21/11/2025 11:32

Have dark blonde hair, usually do a good job of a home balayage several times a year to look quite natural with a box colour. Used the same one as usual, injuries shoulder so decided to not take as much care and then just put all over as not really noticeable.

It’s orange. My son’s christening is Sunday. I’ve tried purple toner hair mask etc. I have thin hair and the balayage makes it look a bit thicker . Now it’s the same colour as my scalp. Do I dye it darker? Can’t get to a hairdresser. All booked. Can I do at home low lights???

looks a lot more luminous orange in real life. Like I’m a teenager who’s dyed their hair with bleach. FFS.actually these photos really don’t show how yellow/orange it is. Keep going with the purple shampoo or buy a box of dark blonde??

You need one of these:

Too late for even their swift delivery, but you could look for something similar in physical stores. Or fashion a silk turban from a scarf.

Turbans

Nothing conveys personality quite like a beautifully crafted hat. Our statement turban is at the top of everyone's wish list.

Head and Shiulders or fairy liquid is supposed to strip some of the colour out.

Is it too late to say it's a fancy dress christening and use this as part of your outfit?

OrangeITellYou · 21/11/2025 11:42

Thank you all! I’ve ordered some of that hair touch up powder to make it less terrible. Blue toner!! Thanks!

If all else fails, re: suggestions on here, can you have your hair styled as best it can be, and/or wear a padded head band or something else that will look good with your length of hair and outfit? Professionally applied makeup to compliment the colour of your hair? It doesn't look unusual in the photos that's true. If you can cover your hair with something that will look good in photos etc... I'm sure you'd feel somewhat better? I hope you're able to enjoy, somewhat, this special day, most people's attention will be on your DS, Good luck.

Get an ash toner level 8

Frequency · 21/11/2025 12:04

You can also use hair colour as toner, if you're not happy with the tone. Blue shampoo will take out the orange and give you a dark, blonde/light brown colour, but it might look flat. I'd avoid box dyes as the peroxide in them tends to be very strong, and your hair is fragile right now.

Your hair is roughly a level 8 at the moment. I'd look at Wella colour touch, you want to look for colours that start with a 7 or 8 and have an 8 after the / eg. 7/89 or 8/8. The peroxide you need is Wella's pastel peroxide (1.6% or 6 vol)

The numbers all have a universal meaning; the first number refers to the level of lightness/darkness your hair is, 1 is jet black, 9 is almost white. The numbers after the / refer to the tones in Wella 8 is blue, 6 is violet, and 1 is ash (green/blue).

Purple cancels out yellow.
Blue cancels out orange.
Green cancels out red/dark orange.

The first number is the same across all ranges, but I believe Wella use a different numbering system for their tones, so if you decide to use a different brand look up what the tonal numbers are.

If you do decide on colour, remember your hair is freshly bleached and will grab the colour quicker, you might not have to leave it on as long as the directions say. Instead, grab a paper towel and wipe some off one strip every 10 minutes to check the tone. Once it is the colour you want, rinse it off.

I wouldn't bother with toners from bleach kits, they will all be purple-toned. You need blue.

Mixing this 1:1 with some conditioner will also work if your Boots has no blue shampoo. As would a blue crazy colour if you have any stockists near you.

These are on Prime and will also work.

OrangeITellYou · 21/11/2025 17:56

Can’t get to a shop and this one is out of stock online for boots. For some reasons Amazon prime is Monday delivery for most things when usually always next day

OP posts:
OrangeITellYou · 21/11/2025 17:59

The Amazon ones do I need both? Can only get the smaller tube next day.
I think I had an allergic reaction to the first one as well so wondering if I should do anything. My head still hurts. Good job I did recent as washed it off sooner otherwise would have looked even more stupid

I have not heard of this brand. The Matrix and Fanola ones I linked to are ones I have used and know they work. This one says it's blue and will work better than a toner from a kit.

Frequency · 21/11/2025 18:07

You do need both; any 1.9%/6 volume peroxide will work, it doesn't have to be Wella. They get mixed, 1:1 I think colour touch is, but it's been a while since I used it, so double check on the instructions.

Was it just bleach you used? You probably have chemical burns rather than an allergic reaction. Powder bleach is not supposed to be used on the scalp, and the peroxide from the kit was probably 9 or 12% which should also not be used on the scalp.

Do a skin test with the colotr (mix a small blob from the tube and the bottle and apply behind your ear) wait at least an hour to see if there is any reaction. If there isn't you'll be fine but it won't hurt to put some coconut oil on your scalp before you apply the colour, if you have any.

OrangeITellYou · 20/04/2026 12:57

Everyone was so helpful on this thread that I thought I’d ask again which box colour to get to colour my hair this time from what it is now. Not coloured since November. This is the root colour. Will properly allergy test before this time too.

either of these two I’d ideally like the ends, but they both say not suitable, so I’m guessing I need something darker, these are 8 or 9 first number, do I need darker? I like the Viking blonde one on this one…https://www.boots.com/loreal-paris-preference-viking-9-1-light-ash-blonde-10195985

Your roots are closer to a level 5 or 6. I'd not go up more than 1 level using box dye. The issue with it is the generic peroxide, which is usually 20 volume/6%, without the added lightening effect from bleach, you can only really lift 1-2 levels with it.

The two colours you'd linked are both closer to a 9 or even a 10.

This would be better, in the 7/1, especially if you can stretch to a tube of the 0/68 special mix to add to it, which would brighten it up. With a 6% developer. Apply to roots first and add to ends during the last 10 minutes.

I never use box dyes, but if you're stuck on the idea of box dye, use one that starts with a 7 and do the same apply it to roots first, and then the midlengths and ends.
