We all need a day off to mark sometihng special. But what would it be. The birth of a famous celeb from your area, the grand opening of your local pub, or even your parent's birthday.

Rules for responses
Don't suggest something in January. We have time off over Christmas and I think your bosses want you to work in January.
What would you call it?
Would you close shops and buisness for the day so we can all celebrate?
Should schools mark it closer to the time?
Would we re live it. Maybe if it's a big TV event show it on big screens around the city.

I'll make my birthday a bank holiday. It's in summer so I'm sure it would be popular 😁

MyPithyCat · 19/11/2025 22:50

Also remeber to put the exact date with the year. We'll close the lines at the end of this year (no date yet) and then it'll be sent off to the government and they'll see what they can do

Mayor weighing day is pretty unique. But happened around 24th may. So already a good month for bank hols

The Newport Rising - Monday 4 November 1839 - we've just gone past it, so plenty of time to prepare for next year!

I would call it: From The Ashes or Newport Rises Again
Would I close shops/businesses: Yes, and we would remarch the old tracks that took people into the city to campaign for democratic reform. I would do the Blackwood march because I'm from Cefn Fforest.
Should schools march?: Yes because not enough is taught about politics in school or how they impact our lives. Plus in Wales we have a Senedd AND UKG to consider and an election coming next year. Obviously little kids wouldn't walk the whole way - but they could get bussed in and walk the last few hundred yards. And maybe no bloodshed at the end.
TV event: S4C would definitely cover it and many Welsh cities have big screens for the rugby... it would be a big thing, in Wales at least.

Also can we finally fucking have 1 March as a Bank Holiday please? We've been asking Westminster since we've had a Senedd and each year they say no.

We’ll have to be creative with the date as this did happen in January. I’d celebrate the time a shit tonne of wood planks washed up on our beach and people came from miles around to stand and look at it!

National wood plank day. The whole town will close down for the day and we’ll go down the beach and have a bonfire.

Christ0nABike · 19/11/2025 22:57

1st of August is already Yorkshire Day and I’d be happy for that to be an extra bank holiday, where the whole country must eat Yorkshire puddings at the whippet races while doffing their flat caps and exclaiming “ey up”.

March 10th - commemorating Prince Andrew’s visit Woking to Pizza Express with his daughters.
It is a date of historical significance & should be recognised as such.

Tillow4ever · 19/11/2025 23:18

I’d have to try to find the exact date, but around Nov 2020 we were the last county in the country to have a Macdonald’s open lol, it even made the news in the New York Times!

BonnieBairn · 19/11/2025 23:27

18th November, Scotland qualified for the world cup. First time since 1998, definitely worth a bank holiday 🥳

Oh yes definitely this!

2nd March for Daniel Craig’s birthday. He seems to live locally
(Harry Styles too but he’s 1st Feb and I think March would be better)

jamesbond34 · 16/05/2026 16:38

Something like a bank holiday should really reflect moments that brought people together, not just official events. In many areas, it could be a major sports win, a community recovery effort, or even a milestone in local development that shaped how people work and connect. Shared celebrations often improve workplace morale too, which is something discussed in pieces around onboarding and team culture on Business Blog

queenofwandss · 16/05/2026 16:45

I’m putting forward a suggestion of a bank holiday every month. I’m willing to sacrifice Boxing Day and one of the May bank hols to redistribute them in the year. I am not willing to make Easter a 3 day weekend but sometimes that falls across March and April so it works anyway.

My reasoning is simply that they are good for us all and we should have more opportunities for fun.

24th April 2014. The day my son got picked to start with his football team for the first time ever. Also the last, he wasn't very good at football tbh

National Delia day- 28th February when delia smith walked onto the pitch at Norwich city and said “let’s be ‘aving you”

crackofdoom · 16/05/2026 19:16

Either 27th June, the day An Gof was hanged at Tyburn for leading the Cornish in an uprising....

Or the date of Stithians Show in July, a cracking little agricultural show that you can't visit if you have school age kids because they always hold it on a Monday. (Thinking about it, maybe that's intentional...)

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/05/2026 19:17

13 August - Battle of Lewisham - when the National Front tried to march though Lewisham town centre sowing hatred and racistm and 4000 good citizens of Lewisham and anti racist campaigners turned up to show they were not welcome (and gave them a good kicking).

Could have done with that today
The NF was decades ago
Bloody sad that something's never change.

I'd have 30th September as Girl Power Day as it's the day I achieved my pilots licence at 35 years old, whilst also being a mum to a 4 year old. I'd also clearly gone through some weird early midlife crisis.

Considering only 5% of pilots are female though, I'm mighty proud of it and clearly anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Ohgoose · 16/05/2026 19:28

Ed Balls day. 28/04/2011.
The day Ed Balls accidentally his vanity search on Twitter. He’s embraced it and even made a cake one year to commemorate it.

DoreenSlater · 16/05/2026 20:14

The exact date of our parents birthday? The name of our local? These sound like the security questions to recover an online account rather than reasons to have a bank holiday.

6 July, the (traditional) death of Fair Rosamond. Just before the European monsoon starts, so might be good weather.
