Household (or anything else you can think of!) items you have had for years and still look good or don’t need replacing

I know this is extremely boring, sorry. I’ve just washed up and realised that my set of stainless steel Morphy Richards saucepans are 25 years old. They do have a few stains on the bottom of each pan but they otherwise look as good as new.

Ive recently separated from my STBXH and my pans (from marriage number 1) are about the only household things I took with me when I left. Everything else in my house is brand new. Bit depressing really to have nothing from two failed marriages other than a set of saucepans but there we are.

Is there anything in your house that has lasted for a long time and still doesn’t need to be replaced? (other than disappointing husbands obviously…)

My cutlery is approx 50 years old. My sofa and arm chair are 31 years old. I have various bits and bobs like vases, kitchen knives, a carving fork, glasses, wooden stools, that are between 80 and 150 years old

I don’t know if this is the case, or not, but I wonder if things that were made years ago were just of better quality than now. I don’t like to buy really cheap stuff for my house. I prefer to save and buy what I really want in the hope I won’t have to replace it for a long time but in general I’m not sure things are as well made these days

My hallway and bathroom mirrors are pretty old. They were here when I moved in 25 yrs ago!😁

YelramBob · 19/11/2025 19:41

Not boring at all OP 😅

My mum still has those amber coloured Vision saucepans from the 80s, swears by them!

Speaking of disappointing husbands, I bought an LG microwave when I divorced mine 22 years ago and it's still going strong unlike the ex who died

Wooden fruit bowl.

18th birthday present from family friend. It’s now past that birthday for itself.

Ohmygodthepain · 19/11/2025 19:43

My current pan set I inherited from my mum 3 years ago, they're 25 years old now. Previously I was using my great uncles inherited pans which were maybe 40 years old, couple of minor dings but beautiful copper bases.

My sewing machine is 40 years old.

The majority of my downstairs cabinets etc are from IKEA, pre kids so 22 years old, still in decent nick.

I've got plenty of clothes 10+ years old.

I commented to my mother last night I had just bought a new cheese grater... the ild one being a wedding present 15 years ago. The handle had broken.

I remember those! You wouldn’t want try to hang it on your wall. It would probably pull your house down.

I have a Pyrex bowl and small casserole I bought in 1973. I have my mum's sewing machine from 1953 but I have a modern one too.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/11/2025 19:46

DP, a bit tatty round the edges, but still seems to be functioning. Does't really need replacing but maybe a bit of a polish with a stiff brush.

Would it be very wrong to have laughed at the microwave vs ex-husband comment?

Only just binned salt and pepper grinders that were a house warming present from my best friend for my first home in 1999 because the mechanism finally went. They hadn’t dated in looks at all.

No because I did too 😁

I have a Tigi hairdryer that I had for about 15 years - still works and is good.

Sundrops · 19/11/2025 19:52

My dad has a microwave that is about 45 years old....still works and is immaculate 😂 and I also have a metal potato masher that was his that must be at least 50 years old or more, again in perfect condition and is used regularly.

My last hairdryer went rogue. There might have been sparks and scary noises. RIP GHD, I now have a Parlux. I’m hoping this one has a bit more gumption.

A Bamix hand blender that my mother bought in about 1964, and DH's grandparents' saucepans that date back to the 1950s. DS has already put his name on them! Otherwise, our Dualit toaster, bought in 1988.

Middlemarch123 · 19/11/2025 19:58

I have a Swan slow cooker that was a wedding present 34 years ago and it’s still going strong.

Meant to add, it’s lasted longer than the marriage did😂
