Household (or anything else you can think of!) items you have had for years and still look good or don’t need replacing

I know this is extremely boring, sorry. I’ve just washed up and realised that my set of stainless steel Morphy Richards saucepans are 25 years old. They do have a few stains on the bottom of each pan but they otherwise look as good as new.

Ive recently separated from my STBXH and my pans (from marriage number 1) are about the only household things I took with me when I left. Everything else in my house is brand new. Bit depressing really to have nothing from two failed marriages other than a set of saucepans but there we are.

Is there anything in your house that has lasted for a long time and still doesn’t need to be replaced? (other than disappointing husbands obviously…)

I have a 1980s electric hand whisk which is still going strong!

WolfieMuma · 19/11/2025 20:42

I don’t use it, but I have a jug that belonged to my grandmother that must be more than 50 years old

My mum has furniture from her childhood home - 100 years old

DH and I moved into our house 20 years ago, and still have and use housewarming and wedding presents - towels, knives, pans, etc

Prestige Lifetime pans, 41 years old
Ironing board also 41 years old
Potato masher given to me off my mum is 62 years old and still going strong
Denby greystone tableware 42 years old.

Our basic little British-made Hotpoint washing machine is 26 years old & still going strong. It has had several sets of new buses & seals, but everything else is original. It has absolutely no fancy features whatsoever, but it does the job. We have been told that when the main bearing or irreplaceable circuit board dies, that wIll be the end, but until then it won’t be replaced.

I still have lots of things from 20 years ago and don't even think of them as old. Denby China, tea towels, sheets etc.

We're just reaching the point where the flat screen TV I bought in 2004/5 should probably be replaced, as there's a bunch of dead pixel lines an inch thick on the left side. It's most noticeable when DP's watching the football because it's exactly where the home team's score is displayed.

It's cost me the equivalent of £25 a year if I replace it tomorrow.

I'm sorry op but this did make me chuckle. Hey, saucepans are useful!

Titsywoo · 19/11/2025 20:57

I've still got my parents wedding china (well some of it) from M&S and it is 51 years old. I love it so much I bought more off marketplace and also a friends grandad died and gifted a load to me. The plates are very strong and have a fairly high lip so great for meals with lots of sauce.

Fayaway · 19/11/2025 21:03

When I bought my first tiny flat in the 80s, I treated myself to a hand towel from John Lewis (the others were from the market). It was still going strong (so soft!) until a few years ago when my youngest nabbed it as his “lucky” goalkeeping towel. It was a dusky grape colour, nearest to the grey of his goalkeeping hero at the time. I’ve seen it hung unnoticed in many a net. He’s 24 now, must ask if he still has it!

Chinsupmeloves · 19/11/2025 21:05

Morrisons copper bottomed pans, still going strong 20 years later...

lindypopper · 19/11/2025 21:08

Just realised that all our wedding list stuff is 22 years old now - I've never got over thinking of it as new.

I know 22 years isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, but I have to give a shout out to my favourite knife. It's supposed to be a steak knife, but I use it for everything (and I do a lot of cooking from scratch). In fact I recently bought a second one after realising how dependent I was on it, and finding out that Sabatier were still making the exact same knife. So now I have 2 and can't tell them apart. The 22 year old knife is still as sharp as the new one, in spite of never having been sharpened. No idea how that's possible, but I do love that knife. Might buy a third, actually, just in case.

We have a microwave which DH has had since about 1992. And around the same time I was given a vase for my birthday and I still have it.

I love this post. I wish I had something, anything, from my family/childhood. I don’t have anything at all. I also wish I could play a musical instrument. It must be lovely.

It is! Take one up today. Flute is the easiest orchestral instrument but if you want to play in a community orchestra they’ll be keener to have a violinist.

I remember those! You wouldn’t want try to hang it on your wall. It would probably pull your house down.

😄

My lovely mum bought me a dressing gown 30 years ago. Its a brown M&S one. I instantly disliked it but thought I'd wear it until it wore out.

Its worn most days and still lools like new... I think it'll be my dressing gown forever 🤦‍♀️

Ladybird69 · 19/11/2025 21:41

I’ve got a Sony Hifi system with a record deck and cassette player from the 80s. 🤞 it still works perfectly. It’s huge but I can’t bear to get rid of it 🥴

WorthyOpalZebra · 19/11/2025 21:45

I don't think household stuff dates like it used to. We have plenty of bits from when we married in 2000 - not just the M&S saucepans and Denby plates, but also picture frames and lampshades. Anything in a house in 2000 that was from 25 years ago would have looked very dated. The seventies had quite a distinct look.

I do agree about quality, particularly over the last 5 years. When I'm looking in charity shops, I'm always amazed at how well made clothes are from relatively cheap brands like New Look and Matalan from the early 2000s.

John Lewis stainless steel pans…. Up to 30 years old!

Yep. Coming up 35 years here!

Ladybird69 · 19/11/2025 21:49

Oh and a kitchen larder cupboard that my Nan and grandad bought in 1932 for their first house. My mum used it and now I have it.

thenightsky · 19/11/2025 21:50

I'm still using the casserole dishes with a printed hunting scene on the front that my granny won at the bingo in Leeds in the early 50s.

SquirrelBlue · 19/11/2025 21:52

I've got some tables my grandad made in the 1940s. We're lucky enough to have a few grandads and great grandads who were talented in carpentry. Sadly it's not a skill I inherited.

pikkumyy77 · 19/11/2025 21:53

Husband.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/11/2025 21:59

Two oval ceramic dishes, dark green, from Habitat c1982
Roasting tin c1982
Denby Memories butter dish c1982

1991
Bin and magazine rack
Indestructible stainless steel colander
Glass measuring jug
Damask napkins and table cloths
Cutlery
Carving dish and fork and carving knife
Ladles to match cutlery
Fish kettle

Father's Victorian wing chairs
Grandparents' dining room table and chairs - wonderful solid mahogany, so unfashionable probably worth very little now - they will come again

This made me think of my favourite primary school teacher who retired in the 80s and was given a Sony hi-fi system as a retirement present, she was over the moon ☺️

So strange, all these years later we just need a phone and a Bluetooth speaker to play our music.
