Household (or anything else you can think of!) items you have had for years and still look good or don’t need replacing

I know this is extremely boring, sorry. I’ve just washed up and realised that my set of stainless steel Morphy Richards saucepans are 25 years old. They do have a few stains on the bottom of each pan but they otherwise look as good as new.

Ive recently separated from my STBXH and my pans (from marriage number 1) are about the only household things I took with me when I left. Everything else in my house is brand new. Bit depressing really to have nothing from two failed marriages other than a set of saucepans but there we are.

Is there anything in your house that has lasted for a long time and still doesn’t need to be replaced? (other than disappointing husbands obviously…)

My cooker hob is about 20 year old, the last original item from getting a new kitchen fitted.

My husband is still using his Granny's potato peeler, she died in 1991🙈.

Ironing Board is DH's from when he first lived on his own post military service in the 1980's. To be fair though, that only sees daylight if we have to attend a funeral 🙄.

DH's radio alarm is from late 1970's, horrible thing, I hate it but he won't replace it until it stops working.

Apart from jewellery, none of my stuff is particularly old 😆.

Oh, I have some Victorian era crochet hooks in my craft supplies, does that count?

My alarm clock was a present from my brother in 1977. It's very 70s in style, black with a red digital display, and still going strong.

I still use my grandmother's apple corer, which is probably Victorian, and tea caddy which she bought new in 1924 - commemorates the original Wembley Stadium opening. Just like this one...

1924 British Empire Exhibition Wembley Liptons Tea Caddy Brass Advertising 12cm | eBay UK

Caddy has dints, scratches and slight tarnish but not bad for 99 years old! It has been cleaned to a lovely shine by our volunteer.

Dualit kettle and toaster, the stainless steel and glass ones. Set of knifes from Selfridges - had them 20+ years! 🥰

Our basic little British-made Hotpoint washing machine is 26 years old & still going strong. It has had several sets of new buses & seals, but everything else is original. It has absolutely no fancy features whatsoever, but it does the job. We have been told that when the main bearing or irreplaceable circuit board dies, that wIll be the end, but until then it won’t be replaced.

Only last year we replaced a still working Hotpoint fridge freezer, that said 'made in England' on it, that was 25 YO.

Part of me wanted to keep it to see how long it would last but two of the plastic freezer drawers were disintegrating, I also looked up the stated annual electricity consumption and it was four times more than the model we replaced it with so for that reason alone it could be justified as it would pay for itself in 2-3 years.

I bought a lot of IKEA 365 stuff when I got married 32 years ago and it’s all still in use. I don’t know if their current stuff is as good as I haven’t had to buy any more!

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 20/11/2025 05:39

I have Art Deco shot glasses which belonged to my grandmother and date back to 1925 and yes we use them regularly. I love to think of all the happy moments celebrated together.

We have my DHs can opener which is over 20 years old. Its ugly but works much better than the prettier ones I have tried since. He also has this ugly plate from the same era which is indestructible….

My hand held blender was bought when I was pregnant with DS 18 years ago and is just about going. I mainly keep it for sentimental reasons, even though its a pain to put together.

Rozendantz · 20/11/2025 05:44

I've got a hand mixer that must be at least 40 years old (was given it 2nd hand). It's quite noisy, and I keep debating about writing to Philips to complain, just to see their reaction don't quite think I have the balls to do so though

Figcherry · 20/11/2025 05:57

I have great grannies treadle sewing machine, at least 110 years old, it still works despite me and my siblings playing with it as kids.
A Royal Doulton coffee set which was a wedding gift 49 years ago.
My lovely coffee percolator finally broke 3 years ago, I used it regularly too, so much more fun than a Tassimo.
My mil’s fruit spoons are my favourite sized spoon for eating desserts, down to just 3 of those.

An iron made in West Germany!

My ghd straighteners are 25 years old. Used almost every day in that time and still going strong.

I have a large red plastic serving spoon. I bought it when I moved into my first flat when I was 18. I am now nearly 70 and I still use it daily

Yes mine are too but I've only used them a handful of times (not for many years as I embraced my waves) so they don't really count IYSWIM

longtompot · 20/11/2025 10:57

Not sure where they came from, maybe in a box of stuff given to us by the in-laws when dh & I moved in together, but a cast iron frying pan & a 1970s cheese slicer. Both excellent at their jobs

I don’t know if this is the case, or not, but I wonder if things that were made years ago were just of better quality than now. I don’t like to buy really cheap stuff for my house. I prefer to save and buy what I really want in the hope I won’t have to replace it for a long time but in general I’m not sure things are as well made these days

Survivor bias - you’ve already binned the crap stuff.

Walker1178 · 20/11/2025 12:54

So I realise this is possibly going to sound naff but I have a designer bed frame from the 70’s. It’s made from resin and is modular, you can unclip the separate parts and move it in the boot of a small hatchback! It’s solid as a rock and is totally silent. I can’t imagine that I’ll ever replace it
