Convinced we have a gas leak, terrified!

I smelt gas in our garden yesterday while I was feeding the birds. It didn’t go away, so I followed the instructions on the meter and called the emergency gas man out. He couldn’t detect a leak inside but a build up in the flue leading outside, he capped it and left. We then called the landlord who sent his gas guy out who was swearing and unprofessional and told us he couldn’t find a problem but will speak to the ll. he’s come back today and said all the readings are fine, nothing needs fixing and left.
Well I’ve just walked in to the kitchen where the boiler is to a massively strong smell of gas! I have sent the kids upstairs, opened all windows and doors and he is sending his guy round again but they both seem pissed off.
Wtaf do I do? I have three kids here and I am convinced there is a leak but I feel like we are being told it’s all in our heads. I feel so anxious and unsafe. DH can smell it as well.
We can’t just leave as I have a disabled DD and pets but the LL seems determined to let us risk it and just said “well it is cold tonight” but I’ve been in this house years now and never smelt gas in the house. Something is definitely wrong.

Phone the gas board?

blankittyblank · 19/11/2025 18:14

Call Gas Emergency Services 0800 111 999

clinellwipe · 19/11/2025 18:15

It’s considered an emergency , an oncall engineer will be sent out any time day or night . For free. You just need to contact whoever supplies your gas.

blankittyblank · 19/11/2025 18:15

Also turn off your gas at the source if you know where that it (it's usually right by the meter)

SaunteringDownwards · 19/11/2025 18:17

We called the emergency number yesterday who capped it and instructed us to call the LL which we’ve done.

If the boiler flue has been capped off, did the gas emergency engineer say the boiler was not to be used?

blankittyblank · 19/11/2025 18:19

It's weird he's sending 'his guy' cus it's a free service! How bizarre. Maybe he doesn't realise this.

Yes he labelled it immediately unsafe until repaired or replaced but the gas guy the ll sent said it was safe to use because he can’t find an issue! But he’s barely looked if it tbh just put his sensor in the outside flue.

So his engineer was sent after the emergency gas guy had already been out.

In that case definitely phone the emergency number again. Explain to them what has happened. As well as resolving the issue they will hopefully also follow up if the 'guy sent round by LL' is qualified to work on Gas.

Ok, did the 1st engineer write a report? Ring the emergency line again, and explain what has happened and that you would like one of their engineers to come out and check it again. Also has your landlord left you without heating or hot water?

SaunteringDownwards · 19/11/2025 18:25

The ll is sending him over again!

Did the LL’s engineer uncap the system? Did he show you the readings? Definitely call emergency number again. Pretty sure that LL is acting illegally here

BasilParsley · 19/11/2025 18:27

I really wouldn't wait for the LL - I'd get back onto the emergency gas number and get them out anyway.

A strong smell of gas is dangerous - the risk of explosion is high if there's a leak. You should be sending your children away from the house to a friend or a neighbour's rather than upstairs until it's fixed....

Yes, he uncapped it and told us there was no problem!

We’ve turned everything off but there is nowhere to send my kids to! No smell now it’s off either. He’s trying to see if he can detect anything now.

Get out of the house for Christ's sake.

Once you are out, phone the gas board emergency number.

SaunteringDownwards · 19/11/2025 18:45

He isn’t detecting a drop or leak inside the house he says. But we definitely smelt gas!

If I thought there was a gas leak in my house id get the kids out of there! not send them upstairs!

Phone the gas board again instead of this mate of your landlords!

I would too if there was a leak but we’re being told there isn’t one, that’s why I’m posting for more advice here.

Ignore whoever the landlord has sent out, call the emergency gas number the poster above has given asap.

It shouldn’t have been uncapped if the emergency engineer has left it switched off, it sounds dangerous.

I would trust the emergency engineer over some guy the LL has sent over.

SaunteringDownwards · 19/11/2025 18:52

The engineer didn’t detect a leak inside either, just in the flue outside.

Agreed, the LL just doesn’t want to deal with actually fixing the issue.

Call the emergency number again.

You have been told there isn't a leak by a worker sent by your landlord who, in your words 'who was swearing and unprofessional', yet you are believing him over the emergency gas engineer who detected gas in your flue outside and capped your supply.
