I know it's really common these days to hate night driving/be blinded by headlights.
My question is has anyone tried those anti glare sunglasses and did they help?? Thanks

Yes astigmatism and over 40… nearly crashed on m25 as I could not see what lane I was in due to the flare off the headlights- after a lot of debate I got new glasses with these lenses and it’s been amazing- no idea how they work but they are not those horrible yellow ones that do nothing! https://www.zeiss.co.uk/vision-care/need-new-lenses/drivesafe-single-vision-lenses.html

ZEISS Single Vision DriveSafe lenses

✓Good vision on the road but also outside the car. ✓Full UV protection.

Great until you need varifocals. Also, my specs already cost c£600, I expect these lenses would add another couple of hundred.

BerryTwister · 17/11/2025 23:28

Exactly. I put my full beams on when I come up against a particularly big glaring tank. If they’re going to make my life difficult, I’ll do the same to them!

Making it more dangerous for everyone 👏🏻

Thanks for this - am going back to Boots tomorrow to enquire about these!

The worst are those nissan jukes with approximately 5 billion lights on each side. Wtf is that all about?

Negroany · 17/11/2025 23:21

Myopia is caused by rugby ball shaped eyeballs.

That's really strange, as I definitely have rugby shaped eyeballs, but don't* *have myopia, have excellent distance vision.

Anonymousemouses · 18/11/2025 00:38

Elbowpatch · 17/11/2025 22:28

Astigmatism can be corrected by glasses even if your vision is otherwise unimpaired.

Edited

I've never been offered glasses, just been told my distant vision is perfect, but now I need reading glasses.

It sounds like astigmatism. I have astigmatism and I don't need prescription glasses.

Age related changes/worsening eyesight and the development of astigmatism aren't mutually exclusive, though. And cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration can also be present. But the OP hasn't had her eyes tested for a long time and can't see to drive safely.

It's essential for her health, eyesight and the safety of others that she doesn't drive until she's had a full eye examination and sight test - so many of these things creep up until they're eventually noticed (or dismissed in favour of buying some cheap stuff online) and can only be found by a professional.

how can they even be legal?

the lenses have a slight purple tint, I got them in cheap frames and keep them in the car - I only use them for driving at night not all the time. They have given me back my confidence of driving at night I would not be without them.

WonderingWanda · 18/11/2025 07:09

Headlights have got brighter but I don't think that's the only problem, an increasing number of people fail to dip their beam when passing oncoming traffic. This week I have done multiple journeys on dark country roads and cars coming towards me have been merrily driving toward me with full beam blazing, until I flash them and then the remember to dip it.

Greedybilly · 17/11/2025 19:37

@HoodlumboodlumI don't mean normal sunglasses obviously. There's anti- glare ones I've seen advertised. That's what I'm asking about.

Both my sister in law and a friend wear night time driving specs. They say they improve the experience.

Bagamama · 18/11/2025 07:21

It's not possible to drive just looking at the lane you're in. That's dangerous advice. We're meant to read the road and scan the horizon to spot any risks.

Troubler · 18/11/2025 07:23

I’ve had to stop driving at night as even after an eye test and new glasses, I am completely blinded by oncoming vehicles and it’s just not safe. It’s incredibly annoying!

I found this too but I think it’s a vicious circle. People get blinded and put on their brights and then ironically blind the other person who puts on brights and repeat.

Northbynorthbest · 17/11/2025 19:35

Is there anything that helps for astigmatism?

Glasses/proper prescription . just had my prescription changed, good god the difference!

Iheartmysmart · 18/11/2025 07:42

I have the same problem. My car is small and ancient and I’m very short so the massive monstrosities that are currently on the road absolutely blind me. I have regular eye tests and my glasses are up to date with an anti glare coating on them and still struggle. I think I’m going to get a huge run of spotlights fitted to my car and blind the bastards back!

Well its not possible to scan the road either with these lights coming toward you, all you can see is the lights, you cant see any outline of roads, pedestrians, bikes, other cars.

This was me before I went on HRT.

Wow she was only giving you some advice. And of course we are not to know your situation re being housebound. Unfortunately, whether you like the advice or not ,its correct.

Some opticians will do home visits, Specsavers for one so not leaving the house is no excuse.
As for driving and not having had an eye test for years….inexcusable.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/11/2025 08:57

I'm finding this increasingly difficult.
I've always had astigmatism and severe short sighr. Both corrected by glasses (used to be contacts). As it didn't used to be such a problem, I doubt it's astigmatism.

For me, I'd say it's not only LEDs but the fact that more people rely on their full beams coming on and switching off automatically. If you are driving well I think you put them on and take them off more swiftly than the auto does.

I'm also old and due an eye test (coming up to two years) so will ask for a cataract review next time.

BadgerFace · 18/11/2025 09:05

I am so grateful for your post as I had no idea that astigmatism could make the headlight blinding worse. I have this in both eyes although I have special contact lenses for astigmatism. But I really suffer with headlights in the dark so avoid it as far as I can. We also have a normal car, I had no idea the height might be affected by all the idiots driving massive cars around our small London streets…

This info obviously doesn’t change age my problem but it makes me feel a bit less like a failure for not wanting to do what others consider a normal thing driving at night. So thank you!

Pricelessadvice · 18/11/2025 09:08

I have astigmatism. I didn’t realise that not everyone sees car headlights and brake lights as big streaks/lines. I just thought that’s what eyes did at night.

garlictwist · 18/11/2025 09:22

I drive a Polo so quite a small, low down car. I find the worst glare is from cars driving behind me with their big bright lights. So I just turn the rear view mirror away and don't use it and just use the side mirrors instead.

Plantatreetoday · 18/11/2025 09:27

I’m going to post this again.
