I know it's really common these days to hate night driving/be blinded by headlights.
My question is has anyone tried those anti glare sunglasses and did they help?? Thanks

@HoodlumboodlumI don't mean normal sunglasses obviously. There's anti- glare ones I've seen advertised. That's what I'm asking about.

I didn't realise there were night 'sun' glasses to be honest. You learn something new everyday.

I refuse to drive at night now as it’s too dangerous for me and for others if I can’t see when driving. It’s public transport or taxis. I won’t risk my life or anyone else’s.

From what I've heard they're a gimmick and not successful.

Whether you wear glasses or contacts ot have perfect vision, the issue is the fucking wanky awful lights. They are ridiculous and dangerous and the amount of people and organisations agreeing that something needs to be done is the proof of that. Not that anything will be done as it seems that big cars with these headlights are a priority over safety.
Us little car drivers may as well just write suicide note every time we drive in the dark.
Fuckers.

Agree somewhat, the lights today, ugh! Wasn't there something recently in the news about regulating car lights better? I do hope so..

@Greedybilly , I don’t know how old you are but cataracts are another cause of glare

This

I started gradually developing cataracts in my early 50s, over the years night driving became more and more difficult despite regular eye tests and the right glasses ( I also have an astigmatism)

In the when I was 59, I paid.to have the cataract surgery privately I was avoiding driving at night due to the glare but the optician said the cataracts were not bad enough yet to refer me on the nhs.

After the operation I find the glare is much much much better . Incoming lights are still very bright but it is fine to drive compared to what it was like before.

Northbynorthbest · 17/11/2025 19:35

Is there anything that helps for astigmatism?

Prescription glasses!?

RaininSummer · 17/11/2025 21:11

I have my eyes tested and wear glasses for reading but I struggle with the lights at night from oncoming traffic. I don't wear glasses for driving as not needed so don't know what I can do. The yellow glasses don't sound effective.

BringBackCatsEyes · 17/11/2025 21:17

Apparently opticians report the glare of these lights is their biggest complaint by their patients, especially older ones.

Incidentally my night vision has improved now I'm 2 1/2 year post menopause.
It's definitely better than last year. I know every single thing that happens to women after the age of 35 can be attributed to menopause, but I'm taking this one! 👀

BringBackCatsEyes · 17/11/2025 21:20

Putting the white lines and cats eyes back (see my user name!) would help. Honestly, 1/2 the roads I drive on are just a slab of tarmac - it's a nightmare in the rain. I guess the younger generations know no different but I learnt to drive (late 80s) when all roads had cats eyes.
I might start a revolution!

Coffeeblanketandabookplz · 17/11/2025 21:25

Im the same OP, I am to date on my eye test, dont wear glasses and have great vision. I live in a well lit city. Its the bloody bright white headlights cars have now. Absolutely hate driving when its dark x

larkstar · 17/11/2025 21:25

I have some (prescription distance) polarising lenses in glasses I use for driving as I really struggle with bright lights at night especially reflections on wet roads and also where there are no road markings or street lights - I rely on reflections of the kerb to gauge the edge of the road. The polarising lenses definitely help w lot but there's a limit as to how dark it can be before I start finding it too dark to keep wearing them but I'd recommend them or at least I'd recommend you try them - it's not going to cure it entirely and work in all situations but they do help IMHO.

Makingadecision · 17/11/2025 21:28

I get anti glare coating on my glasses for this very reason

värskekapsas · 17/11/2025 21:29

my brother in law has this issue and he checked his eye and surprisingly no astigmatism at all, perfect vision. I think cars are just getting brighter and brighter

TubeScreamer · 17/11/2025 21:29

I really struggle with this. I’m increasingly avoiding night driving if I possibly can.

apremoiledeluge · 17/11/2025 21:29

I keep a pair of specs in my glove box that are very low prescription with an anti glare coating on them, in case I need to drive at night. It does reduce the 'halo' round car lights and crisps up road signs. I prefer not to drive at night though.
Get some proper glasses, don't bother with the yellowy ones.

Agree with you !! . There’s going to be so many more accidents because of this !

I find it so baffling. Car manufacturers are spending millions on car safety, yet something as important as....you know...being able to actually see seems to not be a consideration at all.

I know it’s actually insane !! Really hope something gets done about it soon, puts me off driving now. Although I’ve just got contact lenses in the hope of them helping .
DH said he doesn’t notice it at all, he’s a lot taller than me so maybe why. .

Ohhh don’t get me started on freezing supermarkets 😂

Timemyluckchanged · 17/11/2025 22:02

I have astigmatism and am short sighted and night driving is horrible especially as I drive a small hatchback so I’m low on the road. I recently bought some clip on lenses from Amazon to try. They are brown at the top and yellow at the bottom. They definitely dim the very bright lights and if I drive into an area that’s darker they’re easy to just flip up so I’m just looking through my normal glasses. Only about £14 so worth trying.

Wildflowers78 · 17/11/2025 22:06

Here in solidarity with you, OP! I genuinely find driving at night quite scary nowadays as it’s so hard to see due to constantly being dazzled by the overly bright LEDs. I find that I can get quite disoriented at times.

I’m part of the problem though..! The lights on my 2024 Audi are brighter than the bloody sun. They really need to stop making cars with LEDs - it’s doing far more harm than good

Millindugu · 17/11/2025 22:07

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing this year it seems worse than last year. I feel like I can hardly see anything when a car is driving towards me

InternationalWoman0fMystery · 17/11/2025 22:09

I drive an older, small car and agree that dazzling headlights on bigger, higher vehicles are awful, whether they're coming at me or tailgating. I've just added a 'night driving' lens finish on my latest pair of prescription glasses - it's changed my life. The lenses don't look yellow - they seem clear to me - but are designed to block out a lot of blue light. They really cut out blinding glare and they're great for spotting pedestrians on the darker sections of country lanes too. Recommended!

Springbaby2023 · 17/11/2025 22:18

Eye test, I thought it was normal but it was astigmatism.

SnowFrogJelly · 17/11/2025 22:22

Me too but I have AMD which doesn’t help
best to get your eyes tested
