I know it's really common these days to hate night driving/be blinded by headlights.
My question is has anyone tried those anti glare sunglasses and did they help?? Thanks

@LighthouseLEDwell I've been pretty much housebound/bed bound this year until recently but thanks for the snide telling off. Helpful

Wow she was only giving you some advice. And of course we are not to know your situation re being housebound. Unfortunately, whether you like the advice or not ,its correct.

HearMeOutt · 17/11/2025 19:55

I hate to be ‘that person’ but night glare was my first symptom of t1 diabetes (the high sugar affects the eyes). You haven’t specified whether this has come on suddenly but if it has, just wanted to throw it out there.

Zempy · 17/11/2025 19:55

Since going through menopause I can’t drive in the dark because of the glare from lights. I have astonishingly expensive lenses in my glasses but nothing will stop it according to three different opticians/optimetrists.

So I just don’t do it. Work have to make a reasonable adjustment for me so if I am visiting a client and won’t be returning until after it’s dark, I can get taxis to and from train station.

Luckily it doesn’t crop up very often, maybe three times a year. I wfh the rest of the time.

jamfirstcreamsecond · 17/11/2025 19:56

Driving at night is awful, so sympathies. The anti glare glasses do work but...I found they made it harder to see pedestrians. Obviously this is not a good thing, esp when said pedestrians are dressed head to toe in black and already have a death wish approach in crossing a road. What does help is using the spectacle wipes I bought from Asda for a couple of £'s and cleaning the inside and outside of my windscreen; this reduces glare significantly.

Babybear260 · 17/11/2025 19:57

I have the same thing. Thought my eyes were going but actually turns out I have 20/20 vision. She did suggest I wear yellow tinted glassss for driving if it was more comfortable for me but I just avoid driving in the dark if I can help it now

greencrab · 17/11/2025 19:58

I don't have regular eye tests. Kind of saw them as a waste of time. Had one couple years ago and they said my eyes were fine. Never worn glasses. Feeling bit guilty didn't realise I was supposed to be getting regular checks when I can see fine day to day.

I do find lights difficult when driving bit only specific ones so I'm pretty sure it's a problem with those lights not my eyes!

soupyspoon · 17/11/2025 19:59

SwirlyGates · 17/11/2025 19:53

It's madness that we are advised to focus on the edge of the road to avoid the glare rather than, you know, fixing the problem of glare. We should be able to look at the road ahead so that we can drive safely.

Absolutely. I have astigmatism and menopause eyes

I have the right glasses presceription and contacts when I wear them. I have anti glare for my glasses. It still is almost impossible to see easily when oncoming traffic is glaring, cannot see a thing right in front of me, I wouldnt see someone in front of me running out for example.

Not driving at night is not an option either

Tiredofwhataboutery · 17/11/2025 20:01

I have a pair of glasses with a clear anti glare coating that I find helps a little. Same as for computer I don’t technically need a prescription but my eyes are light sensitive and it helps. I also drive a high up car which helps too. It’s a ye olde one though so my headlights aren’t the blinding ones.

PracticalPixie · 17/11/2025 20:01

I have regular eye tests and do not have any astigmatism, but modern headlights, especially on flasher (no pun intended) cars are blinding. They look like they have full beams on all the time. I fucking hate them

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 17/11/2025 20:17

I also have astigmatism and drive at night always in contact lenses as I don't wear glasses.

I just never look directly at oncoming traffic, I always look down my own lane and look at the incoming traffic with my peripheral vision. Never look further over than your side of the middle white line.

I work I this area and recommend this company (I don’t work for them!!)

Lemintonic · 17/11/2025 20:23

Whether you wear glasses or contacts ot have perfect vision, the issue is the fucking wanky awful lights. They are ridiculous and dangerous and the amount of people and organisations agreeing that something needs to be done is the proof of that. Not that anything will be done as it seems that big cars with these headlights are a priority over safety.
Us little car drivers may as well just write suicide note every time we drive in the dark.
Fuckers.

Have you had your eyes tested recently? Astigmatism does that for me.

Agreed. I'm astigmatic. My optometrist recommended those yellow anti-glare lenses. They help a bit, but they don't get rid of the astigmatism halo.

Greedybilly · 17/11/2025 20:39

I will book an eye test this weekend.
Doesn't sort out all of the dicks in massive SUVs with glaring headlights though does it?? ( hopefully will help)
Over n out . Thanks again to those kind /normal replies.

Just to add that when I got my eyes tested this year, I got new specs with magnetic clip-on covers - one yellow set for nights and one polaroid for bright sunshine.

Edited

From the website:

Not recommended for driving as the lenses can distort the view through vehicle windows.

No, I'm afraid that nothing sorts out those eejits.

Greedybilly · 17/11/2025 19:37

@HoodlumboodlumI don't mean normal sunglasses obviously. There's anti- glare ones I've seen advertised. That's what I'm asking about.

You can get glasses called Nighthawks, they are specially designed for night driving. Still definitely get that opticians appointment booked though!

Hohumdedum · 17/11/2025 20:41

I didn't know astigmatism makes glare worse. I have it, but have regular eye checks and new glasses which don't solve the problem of night driving.

I have definitely noticed night driving getting more difficult because of the ridiculously bright headlights. No advice I'm afraid but it's not just you OP. We actually have a new, very short, tunnel here which I dread going through because the lights inside it destroy my night vision for quite some time.

I avoid night driving now if possible after a horrible 3 hr night drive when I was about 40 which gave me horrible eyestrain and headache.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 17/11/2025 20:42

I don't have any eye issues, have my eyes tested annually and don't wear glasses.

I really struggle with headlight glare. I use the anti glare glasses and they're brilliant.

TheOliveFinch · 17/11/2025 20:42

@Greedybilly , I don’t know how old you are but cataracts are another cause of glare

ChilliMochaCoco · 17/11/2025 20:44

The optician told me that the yellow glasses aren't very effective and that it's just, as we all know, the settings that car manufacturers put their lights at.
I find it easier at night wearing contact lenses but generally I try to avoid driving in the dark.

Well yes, the first thing is to get a sight test - but you already know that.

My daughter has astigmatism and I bought her a pair of those anti-glare "sunglasses". She didn't find they made any difference unfortunately.

They were just a random pair from Amazon, just to see if they made any difference . Presumably as with all things, there are better quality lenses available and maybe a better quality pair would have a better result.

I believe that opticians can put a yellow type film on your lenses, so it might be worth asking when you get your eyes tested.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/11/2025 20:49

AgentPidge,it's a medical fact. I have really pale wish washy blue eyes. It's a Rod and cone defect. You have both in your eyes, you can look up how they work. I've also got an astigmatism in both eyes now. I have mild short sight, glasses for driving,TV. I've tried night vision, antiglare specs, special coating.....all recomended by different branches of Specsavers, all useless, waste of money. I only drive on lit roads,or ones I know 100%
