Hello can anyone recommend some board games that can be played two players? Looking for some new ones for my 8 year old and I😁

the Game of life is fun

Dragonswood (fighting monsters by collecting Character cards and rolling dice)
Ticket to Ride (collecting train cards and tickets, using those to complete routes on a board map)
Settlers of Catan (using dice to roll numbers on hexagonal tiles and collecting resources to build an empire)
Carcassonne (laying tiles in turn to create a network of roads, cities and waterways to gain resources and points)

If any sound particularly interesting I can explain in more detail!

Ticket to Ride & Catan (both Junior versions) are popular here, youngest kid was 6 when we got them, but still challenging enough to be fun now - eldest is 11.

Ticket to Ride is brilliant

Scotland Yard is a fun game too

The Sock Game, not a traditional board game but really good fun

CaminoDays · 16/11/2025 22:38

Ticket to Ride and Catan also often played here.

Also like : Wingspan, Istanbul and Azul.

We play a lot of boardgames, but we've had a few duds, often £40+

So now before I buy one I tend to play it online or watch a playthrough first to see if I think it will appeal.

There is a website called board game arens where you can play most games ( its free) or if not available there, often there is a playthrough video on Youtube 'BoardGameArena

It's not new, but we find 5 Second Rule incredibly funny, especially when you get flustered!

Mumofone1xx · 19/11/2025 11:19

Thank you all! For ticket to ride, what version do you all have? As there seems like lots! Is it the first journey one, london one or another kind? Not sure if there is a difference in difficulty between them

We have this version, still complex enough for my 8 & 11 year olds currently, we've had it 2 years....

I think the American one is the original, I have that one as well as Europe. The Europe one has a couple of extra/different tiles/rules (tunnels etc)

Quirkl is good for that age. It's a bit like connect 4, but with more thinking involved.

Rocknrollstar · 06/07/2026 07:40

Labyrinth. It’s a great game and suitable for adults and children. We also liked Trionimos. Ie triangular dominoes.

Hi,
If you enjoy board games, Minecraft can be a fun change of pace because it encourages creativity and teamwork in a completely different way. I’ve picked up some interesting building ideas and beginner tips from https://minecrftapp.com/ that made playing with friends even more enjoyable. It’s a great option when you want something open-ended and relaxing.

Harmonies is great for slow strategy, play with my 8yo and also solo.

Azul is also a good 2 player.

frozendaisy · 09/07/2026 09:05

Backgammon

Bubbleybees · 09/07/2026 09:14

Patchwork and Tsuro are good for two players. Rhino Hero and Colt Express are fun too. Yahtzee if you want something more classic.

Look at tabletopfamily on Instagram, they have lots of recommendations both for games and also things you can do with paper and pen

Also tanushree.momandmore has some fab ideas for things you can do with a pack of Uno cards.
