Just been reading about how high in calcium they are. And wondered if it is a crazy thing to do or if other people do it? I always worry about my calcium intake

How? They taste awful if you’ve ever eaten a bit by accident. Could grind them up and try putting them in things I guess. Be a bit gritty id have thought.

Mymaloy · 16/11/2025 13:32

Yes apparently you can bake or boil them. Then grind them up and use to add to food. The calcium is in a form that is very easily absorbed

BillieWiper · 16/11/2025 13:32

No why would you? They presumably don't really have any taste? Just take some calcium tablets?

Mymaloy · 16/11/2025 13:34

Just kind of wondered if better for you than tablets as in a more natural form.

Ugh no way

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 16/11/2025 13:35

Unless you know you are exceptionally low in calcium, why would you even think of considering it? Have a tin of sardines instead.

JudgeBread · 16/11/2025 13:37

I lost a bet once and had to eat a raw egg whole shell and all without spitting any out. That experience was quite enough for one lifetime, I'll stick to drinking milk and eating cheese for my calcium.

Fiftyandme · 16/11/2025 13:38

Omg - this would be sensory hell for me. Good luck

Mymaloy · 16/11/2025 13:39

I thought it sounded like quite an easy way to get calcium. Eating a tin of sardines every day is likely to get a bit monotonous. One teaspoon of powdered eggshells contains all the calcium you need so could just add to a smoothie or bolognese or whatever🤷‍♀️

i was curious if anyone here had tried it. But obviously not a popular idea!

If eating eggshells was recommended to address low calcium levels we would all be aware that it's a thing. Hence, I think it is not an (advisable) thing.

Yes that’s what I thought. There must be a reason it is not something I heard of before

I also read some studies that said calcium supplement have shown a possible link with heart disease so was wondering they not such a good idea

Think i will stick to drinking milk then. Probably safest

No but I did see a TikTok or something showing someone doing this! Baked it and grown it up and keep it in a jar apparently l! Not been tempted though!

In the past 4 years I've broken both shoulders in separate accidents. I've since had a Dexa scan which revealed I have osteopenia (early stages of osteoporosis). When I broke the first shoulder, I started taking Vitamin D and calcium supplements. However my GP told me that as I take calcium practically every day from food, I only really need to take a VitaminD supplement, and then only in winter. I am quite conscious of my calcium intake but only that if i don't have cereal for breakfast (so getting calcium from milk) I make sure i have cheese, eggs or yogurt at some point.

As long as you're not vegan, and/or you don't have an eating disorder, I don't think it's hard enough to get enough calcium.

My dog does but she’s a bit weird?

tara66 · 16/11/2025 14:00

I used to put them on my garden (off the point).

Foxes eat whole eggs including the shells. Your dog must be a throwback 🤣🤣

SpringIsSprung1 · 16/11/2025 14:07

Many years ago when I worked as a teen in our local fish n chips shop. The chef would put ground egg shells in the curry sauce. It was always delicious!

Oohh · 16/11/2025 14:08

I read that the whole egg including shell were good for dogs so I give mine an unpeeled egg at times. She’s a lab though and would eat anything.

Im not keen on the idea for myself though.

cooldarkroom · 16/11/2025 14:10

It's good for chickens .........

Mydogisagentleman · 16/11/2025 14:13

My dog loves a whole hardboiled egg.
I've never been tempted to join him

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/11/2025 14:14

If you ever buy tinned salmon, or any other fish, they do say that eating the bones is very good for your calcium intake. At least with tinned fish they’re relatively soft, but TBH I always bin them anyway.

Mymaloy · 16/11/2025 14:16

My dog will eat eggshell she finds when out on walks. Sometimes dogs do instinctively know what’s good for them !

My mother used to put egg shells around plants to keep slugs away, I am now beginning to wonder if the slugs ate the egg shells and consequently became snails with all that extra calcium? 🐌
