Does anyone eat eggshells?

Just been reading about how high in calcium they are. And wondered if it is a crazy thing to do or if other people do it? I always worry about my calcium intake

My Dad used to make Advocaat at home. It involved putting whole eggs (shell and all) into some sort of brandy concoction. The alcohol dissolved the shells. It was delicious.

Notdanishsusan · 16/11/2025 14:59

My toddler loves them. But apparently you should boil them for ages. But we only really get chance to wash them before he swipes them as we cook.

It's good for chickens .........

Yes, our bastard chickens have got into a habit of eating every bloody egg they lay 😡

wantom · 16/11/2025 15:02

I'd want to sterilise them first since they come out of the arse of a chicken. Far too much work for me, back to the vitD and calcium tabs so.

herbalteabag · 16/11/2025 15:06

I gave my child a boiled egg for lunch when he was a toddler. After becoming distracted for a few minutes, I turned round and he'd eaten the entire thing, shell and all. Never fancied it myself though!

Clearinguptheclutter · 16/11/2025 15:09

one for the dogs, I think

But if you bake them in the oven, (egg shells I mean !) the chucks eat that instead of their own eggs in theory

Foxes eat whole eggs including the shells. Your dog must be a throwback 🤣🤣

😂 This would explain a LOT!

I thought it sounded like quite an easy way to get calcium. Eating a tin of sardines every day is likely to get a bit monotonous. One teaspoon of powdered eggshells contains all the calcium you need so could just add to a smoothie or bolognese or whatever🤷‍♀️

i was curious if anyone here had tried it. But obviously not a popular idea!

Eating sardines daily is monotonous, yet eating eggshells is somehow preferable?😂

Curfew · 16/11/2025 15:22

😂agree with @BeetrootBean your logic seems somewhat skewed!!
I thought they also have a lot of iodine in them, wouldn't that be dangerous?

I'm going to stick with cheese. And
milk chocolate!

@Notdanishsusan I'd be cautious about that, aren't they a salmonella risk?

BauhausOfEliott · 16/11/2025 15:29

A stick of chalk is also full of calcium, but I doubt you’d think it wise to eat one.

There are many other dietary sources of calcium and plenty of supplements containing calcium are available so god only knows why you’d be considering getting your calcium from eating eggshells.

Apart from anything else, I suspect you’d scratch your mouth, throat and oesophagus to bits.

Turophilic · 16/11/2025 15:34

You could have a slice of cheddar and you're choosing eggshells? I question your choices, OP!

Mymaloy · 16/11/2025 16:06

I am not choosing eggshells! I just asked if anyone else does. But the reason is that a slice of cheese only gives say 20% your daily amount. The eggshell is much more. One eggshell is more than daily requirement

Mymaloy · 16/11/2025 16:07

I did already update to say I am not going to eat the eggshells. It was just curiosity

Eyesopenwideawake · 16/11/2025 16:08

I bake them to sterlize them, smash and grind 'em and then....feed them right back to the chickens!!

Which gives you the opportunity to eat 5 times more cheese. I'm not seeing a problem with this plan.

"No, I need all this cheese. Calcium, innit."

Justification for scoffing cheese is always handy.

InfoSecInTheCity · 16/11/2025 16:19

Apparently if you bake and grind them then add them to ground coffee it makes the coffee smoother and less bitter. I have not got the time or will to be baking and grinding egg shells when I can just stick a pod in my coffee machine, but if you have then it might be worth a try for smoother coffee and a calcium hit.

BertieBotts · 16/11/2025 16:21

Surely if they were better than tablets, someone would use them to make tablets and market that as such. If they're not, I assume that tablets are probably already in a better form to absorb.

Mydogisagentleman · 17/11/2025 18:16

My dog loves a whole hardboiled egg.
I've never been tempted to join him

CalmShaker · 17/11/2025 21:12

That's crazy I've never heard or had any Idea they were edible.

On a serious note , anyone here eat banana skins?

Bjorkdidit · 17/11/2025 21:37

Have you never had a bit of shell in an omelette or egg mayonnaise? It's horrible and that's just one tiny bit not a teaspoon full.

OvenChick · 17/11/2025 21:41

God no, they're always covered in shit and feathers. If I wanted to taste essence of cloaca I'd lick one.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 17/11/2025 21:46

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 16/11/2025 13:56

My dog does but she’s a bit weird?

I’ve seen it recommended for dogs, but never heard of people eating them. Think about when you get a bit of shell into an egg you’ve broken to make something, you would normally spend ages picking it out and that’s just a tiny bit.

Geranium879 · 17/11/2025 21:47

My children once rescued a garden snail with a small crack in its shell. We made it a small snail hospital (terrarium thing) and fed it loads plant based stuff but also read that they like to eat eggshell to strengthen their own shell. We gave it plenty of eggshell… and after a few weeks its shell and repaired itself and we liberated it back into the garden (possibly to be immediately eaten by a crow… but the children were delighted).

heartofsunshine · 17/11/2025 21:49

We mash them up and feed them to our chickens 😂
