Just been reading about how high in calcium they are. And wondered if it is a crazy thing to do or if other people do it? I always worry about my calcium intake

I think it's an interesting idea. I can't have dairy as intolerant and do take calcium supplements so if you can't taste them I could try this adding them to sauces maybe. May need to Google a bit first though.

My BIL does. seriously, he cooks the shell (to sterilize it) then grinds it to a powder then eats the powder off a spoon. spent a long time showing us how and telling us how wonderful it was. DH tasted a bit and said it was like eating fine sand - dry and tasteless. Apparently BIL saw it on YouTube and believed the calcium stuff.

and that is why I don't take dietary advice from YouTube.

I think there's probably a reason that dairy products and calcium tabs are offered and eggshells are not.

Just kind of wondered if better for you than tablets as in a more natural form.

There's lots of calcium in oranges, no need to eat eggshells.

One of the Mormon groups in the US advocates eating ground up eggshell. Crunchy!

During awful Covid times I made my own toothpowder from baked and ground eggshells with lemon zest a something else (baking powder?).

It tasted fine and cleaned my teeth really well so I think it would be possible to eat them mixed with porridge or yogurt.

I eat eggshells by a round about route. I grind dried-out shells, then scatter them in the veggie patch when preparing the soil before new planting. In particular I put them in the hole when I'm planting tomatoes.

I do my own batshit thing - I read somewhere that egg skin is 10% collagen, so I peel it from under the shell and shred it into my scrambled eggs every day 😂 I'll let you all know in 20 years if I still look 45 🤣.

That was probably really abrasive and pretty bad for your tooth enamel.
Was there a toothpaste shortage during Covid? I don't remember that.

That's crazy I've never heard or had any Idea they were edible.

On a serious note , anyone here eat banana skins?

Yes. I made fake bacon from them. It was OK. Nigella putd them in curry. Yet to try that.

Surely if they were better than tablets, someone would use them to make tablets and market that as such. If they're not, I assume that tablets are probably already in a better form to absorb.

To be fair, I don't know what they make calcium tablets from, so it could be ground up egg shells for all I know.

My grandmother (born I reckon around 1920 or so, remembered rationing well), would mash up our leftover boiled eggshells on to her homemade brown bread which she reckoned was great for you, nothing would convince us to join her. In the grand scheme of things, that was about the least daft thing she did, bless her

No, why? She lived to a pretty grand old age actually

Sorry. I didn’t mean to sound accusatory. I was just thinking if she had a habit of eating eggshells I wonder if she had good strong bones!

There must be easier ways to get calcium into your system.
