Are you walking your dogs during this grotty, miserable weather?

I don't have any pets but I wouldn't blame any person or pooch for staying indoors today while it is cold and drizzly. And muddy too. This morning I've only seen one dog and that was inside a local coffee shop. Plus a rather bedraggled-looking pony that was being walked in the direction of its stable. It was wet through.

Hopefully we'll have some sunshine tomorrow 😎.

@Lastqueenofscotland2 @trainedopossum totally not the point of this thread but I’ve always hankered after a staffie x whippet. Did you just wait for a rescue to come up roughly that type or manage to find one otherwise? What are they like? Good or bad to know about?

Back to this thread - my old Boston terrier and current staffie cross, they will do anything to avoid a walk in the rain. Brakes go on firmly so it was just sending out to the garden. But I have a cavalier too and he absolutely loves it and sees it as a bonus.

Failed foster 🤷🏻‍♀️ We fostered him and his buddy (JRT x staff) and they were perfect for us.
He had a congenital eye issue so he was a sighthound with poor sight bless him. His body was whippet-shaped but he had a chunky staff head. He was just a lovely boy, very sweet and cuddly, he adored and deferred to our other dog. He was fast!

The weather is positively tropical here (Surrey).

Of course the dog gets 2 x 45 minute walks a day.

Simonjt · 15/11/2025 19:29

No, our dog hates wind, rain, snow, the cold, the dark, leaves if they get stuck in his fur, sand, any wet mud. If it’s raining he won’t go out to the loo unless you have an umbrella, to the point that we now have a little dog toilet under our side porch. He is an absolute prince.

henlake7 · 15/11/2025 19:35

Nope, I don't walk mine in stinky weather. Luckily it's very rare here for it to rain heavily all day so we can usually get at some point in the day (generally they get offered 3 walks day).
Mine are 17 and 13 yrs old so I figure they can decide if they don't want to go at their ages!

MinervaMouseHunter · 15/11/2025 19:59

It's been beautiful here today, I did about 6 miles with the dog on the coast path this afternoon in a tshirt and shorts 😂

She gets walked mostly every day. In heavy rain her main walk might only be 30 minutes but on nicer days could be 3 or 4 hours so it evens out.

In truly awful weather like high wind or constant torrential rain - we skip it. For our sake, not hers. It doesn't harm any dog to skip an odd day, to the contrary it can be beneficial to give them a down day.

Many posters seem to say things like 'they'd be climbing the walls!' almost as if it's some kind of flex to be unable to miss one walk. It's really not - regardless of breed, if your dogs behaviour is awful or unmanageable because of one day indoors then you have an understimulated and, probably, fairly unhappy dog.

loulouljh · 15/11/2025 20:06

Yes. Dogs don't care. Or mine don't.

FoxRedPuppy · 15/11/2025 20:07

Yep. Did a 5k run with mine in the drizzle and wind. We both enjoyed it!

The rain finally stopped yesterday evening and now we have bright-ish skies and the sun trying to break through the cloud. Thank goodness.

Dogs need to be walked come rain or shine. If you're not willing to make that commitment, get a cat or a budgie.

OldBeyondMyYears · 16/11/2025 09:48

Yup…I don’t mind it actually…just wrap up 🤷‍♀️

I know it gets mocked on MN but I genuinely a “no such thing as bad weather” person. I actually did enjoy my run in the rain and wind with the dog yesterday!

Jellycatspyjamas · 16/11/2025 09:54

My boy is almost always up for a walk, likes having wet paws and getting soggy. Last week though there was one morning with heavy wind and rain where he stopped dead just outside the front door and refused to go further, so he does have his limits.

Yes, out at 0545 as usual to our local common.

TaterTots68 · 16/11/2025 18:21

Not had a dog for many years, but when I did, we did all weather walks. Much to his disgust! If we went out in heavy rain, he would walk in front of me and sit down so I couldn't walk forward 😂

Mangoonion · 16/11/2025 18:24

One of my dogs, the other one is an old boy who used to love a walk in all weathers, now he’d be horrified if I took him out in miserable weather, fair weather walks only for him.

horseycomingforty · 15/11/2025 12:19

Just a short one. She hated every second

Same. I force him out but he stays glued to me and runs to every gate hurrying me to get home even with his coat on 😭

Tigercrane · 16/11/2025 18:33

My Shihtzu hates the bad weather but we still walk ,but he's trying to go home the hole time.

ilovemeahack · 16/11/2025 18:34

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 15/11/2025 12:20

My dog hates the rain. He won't go out unless I drag him. He goes out to pee/poo then straight back inside. We then play games inside - I hide his toys in different places and he has to find them, I drop his ball from the top of the stairs and he has to chase after it.

If he gets really bored, we go in the car to the local garden centre and walk round there. Not exactly exciting but he loves it, especially as a lot of people make a fuss of him.

Is he a dachshund? They’re notorious for hating rain - my one has to be forced out in this weather and you know as soon as she’s done her business, she’ll want to be heading home.

StripyShirt · 16/11/2025 18:43

It's Autumn in the UK, not February in Siberia.

Most dogs have very effective fur coats and will be fine in much colder weather than this. It's the poor dogs overheating in unnecessary man-made coats that will be struggling.

Summer heat is a much bigger problem.

Happysinglemum72 · 16/11/2025 19:01

My dog will not go out in the rain. The breaks go on and he’s having none of it. He also doesn’t want to walk in the dark. Right now he won’t even go for a wee at bedtime as fireworks have been Going off every Night for about 6 weeks. So no, when it’s raining we don’t go out. Sometimes he won’t go out out if it looks like a chance of rain!

Notmyreality · 16/11/2025 19:03

Bit of an odd question. Normal autumn weather and dogs need walking.

Inexpertjuggler · 16/11/2025 19:10

I was in the car a couple of days ago, weather windy and rainy, not stormy, but bordering on it, and I saw someone in a long waterproof walking their dog ( light coloured ( golden?) Labrador) and every 5 or 6 steps the dog paused to look up at its owner, with such love. it really touched me and made me smile. I'm not a dog owner, but they're lovely, and i get why people adore their dogs, and don't mind the commitment.

JBJ · 16/11/2025 19:40

Mines a spaniel cross so the wetter and muddier the better as far as he’s concerned! He’d be bouncing off the walls if he didn’t get out.

DungareesTrombonesDinos · 16/11/2025 19:46

My goldie goes out in any weather, other than when it is boiling hot and even then we would take him around 10pm.

I did 7 miles in total with him on Friday and was grateful for my waterproof coat! He doesnt give a shit and dries his face on my bed when we come hone 😂
