Are you walking your dogs during this grotty, miserable weather?

I don't have any pets but I wouldn't blame any person or pooch for staying indoors today while it is cold and drizzly. And muddy too. This morning I've only seen one dog and that was inside a local coffee shop. Plus a rather bedraggled-looking pony that was being walked in the direction of its stable. It was wet through.

Hopefully we'll have some sunshine tomorrow 😎.

Mine refused. We did games in the house instead. They are getting more princessy as they get older and they really really dont like wet and windy weather.

Tryingatleast · 15/11/2025 12:23

All dependent on dog- there’s times he’ll walk out, pee, then either sit with puppy dog eyes or try to drag me bank inside- other times ‘right you wuss, hurry up- we’re off!’

No dog at the moment, but rain or shine dogs need walking.

… except when it’s hot and you shouldn’t walk them according to all professionals.

SparkyBlue · 15/11/2025 12:24

My Jack Russell won’t go out in the rain . He will rush out to pee or poo and almost breaks speed records to get back in the door

Pinkflower100 · 15/11/2025 12:25

Mine would lose his shit if he didn’t get his walks. He’s a working golden retriever (18 months) with a lot of energy. I felt guilty this morning as we did a 2.5 mile lead walk instead of him running around the woods but the weather was pretty bad so we did the lead walk instead. He’ll need to go out this evening too but will be a shorter walk.

My 15 yrs 6 month staffie hates the rain but would follow me to the ends if the earth - or the top of the drive. Yesterday was hideous and she only went in the garden for comfort breaks and enjoyed snuggling on the sofa most of the day.
I also have a big hairy German Shepherd who also hates the rain so no walk for him yesterday. No settee either as he’s too big.
Today, dh taken Staffie and ds taking GSD.
I’m still suffering the effects of the flu so I’m on the settee. When it’s very hot it’s often said a dog won’t die from missing a walk, same goes for very inclement weather.

thistimelastweek · 15/11/2025 12:26

We go out regardless of weather but avoid muddy fields and woods on very rainy days.

onwardandupwards · 15/11/2025 12:26

No as he's almost 18 and refuses to even go in the garden in the rain I stand over him with a umbrella

TheTecknician · 15/11/2025 12:27

I get that exercise is a must for dogs, whether or not they like it. But I wouldn't want to be a Mexican Hairless today, or a short-coated dog like a whippet.

I have rescues from Spain. They all hate bad weather to varying degrees. My girls will go out as long as they have their coats on. My boys are fair weather dogs, lol, and will refuse to leave the house.

Thanks for the correction on my non existent dogs!
Shine does not equate to heatwave...
For the benefit of doubt - you do what's best for your particular dog. Be it adjust times, length of walk, protective gear etc.

WeeAgnes · 15/11/2025 12:36

Dog - yes.

Dongs - ermm, no...

😆

Silverbirchleaf · 15/11/2025 12:39

Yes. It’s actually quite mild out, despite misty.

hiintrepidheroes · 15/11/2025 12:40

Yes. We have an equafleece which only gets worn when raining. Dogs need walks for exercise and mental stimulation regardless of the weather. The only time dogs shouldn’t be walked is in high temps but we just walk earlier. Just invest in a good rain coat for yourself, no excuse.

Fallulah · 15/11/2025 12:42

We have an 11 year old diva who huffs all the way round if I try to make her wear her lovely coat, and hates walking in the rain… but she won’t poo in her own garden so out we go! She has been known to just get to the other side of the road, poo and pull us home though!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/11/2025 12:43

Dog always gets a walk, he doesn’t like the rain so I do try and dodge it if possible.

Hoppinggreen · 15/11/2025 12:44

Golden Retriever owner, we hav no choice and he actually prefers this weather

tripleginandtonic · 15/11/2025 12:45

Yes as the walk is the highlight of the day when he catches up on the village gossip.

Just put a coat on them. Dogs need walking. The only time we don’t take ours out is when the temp is too high and it’s dangerous, but even on a warm summer day it’s almost always possible to do a walk first thing in the morning and last at night.

Jeffandpedro · 15/11/2025 12:48

Mine don't seem to notice the weather and would be horrendous if they didn't get their walks. The only positive is that they get up so much later on dark dank days 😊

heartsinvisiblefury · 15/11/2025 12:48

My dogs don’t even want to go outside to the toilet so that’s a no.

twilightermummy · 15/11/2025 12:49

Yeah, we live in an apartment so no choice unfortunately.

Bumbelinaaa · 15/11/2025 12:52

There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

BigGirlBoxers · 15/11/2025 12:52

Yes of course! In the summer there are so many MN threads exaggerating the risks of walking a dog on warm and sunny days. I would hate to think of MNers also skiving off walks in grotty weather. It would leave the poor pooches with just a little window of mild and pleasent weather inn which to have their fun.

TangyJellyTot · 15/11/2025 12:53

i sent my husband 😂 the dogs don’t understand it’s raining and muddy
