Not technically a TAAT, but the recent post about the poor lady whose being unexpectedly invoiced for cupboard painting by her friend reminded me of my own familles example and I got cross all over again 20 years later 😅 sharing here and hope others will give their examples as I do love a CF thread!!
My mom had received a small inheritance from her aunt and was finally able to start planning a much needed bathroom renovation, when getting quotes her best friend was aghast at the prices and offered her DH help who would do her a ‘favour’, he was apparently an experienced plumber - although continuously out of work?
Anyway she felt like she had to accept, the whole thing was a shit show from start to finish - he got the wrong tiles but fitted them anyway, the bath didn’t fit so he cut the edges off and squeeze it in, it took 6 or 7 weeks leaving her having to use neighbours showers, when it was almost finally done as in tiles were all up with the little spaces in ready to grout and seal, he went on holiday for 2 weeks!! I ended up round there learning how to grout myself just so she was able to use the bathroom finally (which the friend and DH were not happy about)
Once back from holiday the friend was straight round with an invoice for MORE than the original quote DM had gotten from an actual professional, apparently because it had taken so long and he wasn’t able to work on other jobs! They’d itemised the bill too including lunch breaks, it went on for pages and pages it was actually laughable.
The most hurtful thing was the amount added up to the exact amount of the inheritance less what the fittings had cost, so it was like her friend had planned it all along to relieve her of the money iyswim.
My DM was also such a push over, she paid it and didn’t say a word and wouldn’t allow anyone else to either.
