My heart is breaking my 18 year old has found out I have a dog and she says she won't come to my house while I have the dog , I've have explained to her that the dog is 5 it's not a pup and she a very shy good dog but it doesn't matter, we had dogs when she was younger but now she says she hates dogs

OP posts:

I’d have to choose my daughter.

Screwyousimon · 14/11/2025 18:08

Are you drunk OP?

JudgeBread · 14/11/2025 18:09

Did you know she hated dogs when you got the dog?

Interested in this thread?

Can you meet somewhere else? Does she have to come to your house?

ShamrockShenanigans · 14/11/2025 18:09

Why does she suddenly have a problem with dogs?

I guess you'll just have to visit her instead.

Ecrire · 14/11/2025 18:10

What

PracticalPixie · 14/11/2025 18:11

This thread is weird. If you don't know your dd well enough to know how much she hates dogs, why is your "heart breaking" that she cannot come to your house? Can't you meet her somewhere else?

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/11/2025 18:11

How long have you had it?
When did you last see your DD?
Why didn’t you tell her you were getting it?
Why didn’t you know she hates dogs?

I try very hard to avoid going to houses which have dogs, you’ll have to accommodate her.

Pottersciderbar82 · 14/11/2025 18:12

How bizarre! You got a dog knowing she doesn’t like them? Why did you do that?

If she says she won’t come, she won’t come, it was over 7 years for me. Absolutely under NO circumstances would I go to my ils house.

You’ll have to make a decision then won’t you.

NearlyDec · 14/11/2025 18:13

As your 18 year old doesn’t live you and the dog is 5 - have you had the dog for 5 years? It sounds like there is a big back story here.

Gowlett · 14/11/2025 18:14

I would hate a dog being in my family home.
Even though my parents are free to get one.

AquaForce · 14/11/2025 18:31

You're allowed a dog or any pet you can responsibly take care of. Your daughter is also allowed to avoid an environment where she doesn't feel comfortable. Neither is unreasonable.

This doesn't have to be a big deal. You can visit her, meet somewhere neutral or keep the dog out of the living room while she's there. I was bitten by a friend's dog in their house. The trust is gone and I don't visit people who have dogs. That was 40 years ago, I'll never get past it.

ginasevern · 14/11/2025 18:32

@Pottersciderbar82 "How bizarre! You got a dog knowing she doesn’t like them? Why did you do that?"

The OP clearly states that they always had dogs when her daughter was younger but now says she hates them. So in the absence of any updates, this implies that the dislike of dogs is recent and she didn't get a dog knowing her DD hated them!

PracticalPixie · 14/11/2025 18:37

Three days ago, op had a thread about her partner who is an alcoholic and is a monster when he drinks. Seems like a bigger issue than the dog tbh.

There is lots bizarre about this thread but not that OP got a dog. You probably think getting a dog is bizarre so you can justify to yourself that it is normal to not go to someone’s house for seven years just because they have a dog 😂
”You’ll have a decision to make then won’t you” - what a weird and threatening thing to say. You clearly have a massive chip on your shoulder and are a bit of a control freak

It is normal. Not everyone wants to be around dogs - why would you go to someone’s house who has a dog if you don’t like dogs?

And the terminally ill ex boyfriend she was still in love with and wanted to move into her home in January last year. Not sure where the abusive partner was at that point.

OP, do you think that your DD might be using the dog as an excuse not to visit?

Pottersciderbar82 · 15/11/2025 00:12

Getting a dog KNOWING that her daughter doesn’t like them then moaning that she is heartbroken she won’t visit is bloody bizarre, what the fuck did she expect?!

There’s absolutely NOTHING threatening and aggressive about “you obviously have a massive chip on your shoulder” and “control freak”!
Nope, neither, I made a decision based on my fear & phobia of dogs and had no reason to put myself into a house/room with one.

I saw them in other places without the dog, they never asked, I never discussed it. It’s my issue & their personal choice.
