How much money would change your life?

My fave pass time is to fantasise about paying my mortgage off, help my family and work part time.

Obviously if I won millions on the lottery, my check list would look very different, but I need £300k to change my life.

what is your life changing sum and what do want to do with it?

At least £10 million, then I'd buy a new work van. Well, nearly new.

You know, I was just telling someone anecdotally today about how when I was a kid, I used to wake up every morning at like 7am even on Saturdays to buy virtual furniture on this online game called neopets. Then sell it for profit. It took a long time but eventually id earned quite a bit. Like 250,000 neopoints (they were called)

Then, I played the lottery on the game and won 1.5 million. And the game... just suddenly stoped being fun. So I gave all the money away and stopped playing.

The moral of the story: for me, the journey is the fun part.

I think a lot of rich people end up miserable because with more money, comes more fear of making the wrong choices with it. Responsibilities. At least, if you have morals.

When you don't have much you think it will be fun and solve all your problems. But infact it'll probably just create new ones.

This is so, so true. Thanks to DH's company going stratospheric a few tears ago we wi never have to worry about money again and neither will our DDs.

And yet, my greatest pleasure at the moment is restoring and renovating charity shop finds, and browsing second hand bookshops with a festive coffee.

Honestly, even £10,000 would change my life

Me too! I could get the things done in the home that I need and that would change my life because it would improve my mental health greatly! Don’t get me wrong though I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a few million either 🤣

Giggorata · 14/11/2025 19:17

£300K would be the sum for me.
I could buy a small patch of woodland, get a decent conservatory and the downstairs bathroom done finally, get the yard paved and various house repairs and decoration done. Make the two storey shed undamp, somehow.
A semi underground greenhouse on my bit of land, so I could extend the growing season and a water supply laid on. Maybe even electricity.
Get a younger van than mine and a really good quality inflatable awning.

I am retired, so I do actually like my life as it is now, but these would be the icing on the cake.

macshoto · 14/11/2025 19:19

To be life-changing (in our mid-50’s) we would probably need somewhere between £2.5m-£5m.

wotsitallfor · 14/11/2025 19:31

New house, pay school fees, new cars and a lovely hols budget. £2M

Tiuriwiththewhiteshield · 14/11/2025 19:35

Mortgage paid off and kids through uni - £300k would do it ✅ .
Love my job and happy with where we live so wouldn’t change anything

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 14/11/2025 19:40

About £150k so I could retire 7 years early and have some nice holidays. Mortgage already paid off.

ThatKhakiLeader · 14/11/2025 19:47

350k. I could buy a house (currently and probably will forever be renting) and I'd be mortgage free, with a little leftover to furnish nicely and buy a second hand car.
Then I could actually pay into a pension from my wage and the kids would have a stable home that they could stay in for as long as they needed.

Hummusanddipdip · 14/11/2025 19:52

Enough to clear the mortgage, car, my student loan and other debts and allow dh to quit his job and spend a couple years retraining

So about £300k which looking at other comments seems to be about average around here.

BoarBrush · 14/11/2025 20:40

Just enough to buy a house would be amazing as I'm now disabled and it won't ever happen.

In reality I'd absolutely tut that a million wasn't enough, round here at least half that for a big enough house then add on all my therapies and the never ending growing kids and it's all gone pretty fast. 5 mil might do I suppose...

whatsnewpussycat34 · 17/11/2025 10:47

The lottery let me down :(

I think about £150,000 would change our lives. We could do the renovations we need to do to make our home wheelchair accessible for our girls and for it to be safe to leave them at home for a week (they are adults) so we can go away as a couple.
But even £50,000 would be amazing.

DrCoconut · 18/11/2025 00:22

I'd love to win say £3k to finish renovations on my doer upper house. Progress is slow due to limited funds. More would obviously be nice, especially if it meant I could lose the pressure of work.

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 18/11/2025 00:26

£100k to pay off my mortgage, £5k for a second hand car as mine's getting so old now and starting to need repairs. I could live off my wages if I didn't have a mortgage. It's just me and I worry so much about money and what would happen if I lost my job. I'd be fucked if I did, an additional £20k as a nest egg would help me sleep at night.

LoyalMember · 08/02/2026 00:29

My wife's mum died in June, and one of her dying wishes was for her two daughters to be debt free. My father in law mentioned that he'd like to do that and pay off the mortgages for us. I think it gets complicated and the Government gets suspicious if an elderly person gifts money away to family because I think they think they're trying to avoid care home fees later on or something. Anyway, if our mortgage payment was gone, it would make life easier for us.

Paperwhite209 · 08/02/2026 00:49

£100k would be great. £500k would be truly life changing for me and DD.

Oricolt · 08/02/2026 00:55

Enough to put down a deposit on a little house would be an absolute game changer.

At the moment I'm looking at the next 20 years paying rent, then I retire and can no longer afford to pay rent... and I'm not sure what to do about it. Mortgage repayments would be less than my current rent. It's my favourite daydream: a tiny, shabby little place of my own.

ParmaViolletts · 08/02/2026 12:46

50 means a new second hand car ,increase pension a bit and more security .

The car is my.biggest worry at the moment.

100 means that and loft room with much needed second bathroom !

150 would be amazing all of that plus a long haul holiday that we have never been able to do.

200 would mean possibly a new house

300 a new house and money for a car or stay here and be very comfortable

ParmaViolletts · 08/02/2026 12:47

@LoyalMember wasn't it left in a will ?

WhineAndWine1 · 08/02/2026 13:05

£250k. I love my house so don’t want to move but I can do it up in one go, buy a new car outright, pay of the credit cards not much but nice to have zero on it, pay into the pensions and a few amazing holidays.

APurpleSquirrel · 08/02/2026 13:53

£140k would enable us to pay off our mortgage & loans so we’d be completely debt free (not including student loan). So that would be amazing. But just £30k would clear our debts & loans freeing us up to overpay on the mortgage.

3luckystars · 08/02/2026 13:55

€500,000 would change my life entirely. I could buy a home and do it up and get my peace back.

LoyalMember · 08/02/2026 14:11

ParmaViolletts · 08/02/2026 12:47

@LoyalMember wasn't it left in a will ?

No, my mother in law's pensions, policies, and money went to her husband. Yes, my wife and her sister are going to inherit the house and his money eventually, but we hope we don't have to worry about that for a while. He's only 78 and pretty good for his age.

Peenysbeeker · 08/02/2026 14:12

To clear all debts down 170k would do it. I have 20 years to retirement but not paying the mortgage/life insurance/mrtgage protection and a personal loan would make a huge difference to my life.
