Alexei Navalny. Political more than celebrity but I’m still sad about it.

Yes, same.

Also Leonard Cohen, his work meant a lot to me.

ScruffMuffin · 14/11/2025 00:09

Alan Rickman and Sean Lock.
I was also shocked when Christopher Reeve died, and cried for ages.

cuttinganotheronion · 14/11/2025 00:14

Patrick Swayze

pippapipps · 14/11/2025 00:18

Princess Diana George Michael and Paul OGrady all of them really upset me

Cattenberg · 14/11/2025 00:19

Kirsty McColl, as so many others have said. I still find it moving to hear her music at Christmas, around the same time of year that she died. I think of how young and talented she was, how she died saving one of her sons, and how her family still haven't seen justice done and probably never will.

Freddie Mercury

Rattles1 · 14/11/2025 00:32

Ayrton Senna

I heard a clip of Victoria Wood on the radio yesterday and I still had difficulty getting my head round the fact she is no longer with us. And hasn't been for such a long time.

So many of the names on this thread are so poignant. But I agree with OP.that Gary Speed's death was so unexpected and so sad. The circumstances must have been totally devastating for his poor wife.

Gary Speed’s poor wife. Having found happiness again her second husband died too.

ConstantlyTired312 · 14/11/2025 00:34

David Bowie
Christine McVie
Rik Mayall
Matthew Perry

Oh my goodness I hadn't heard about this.
The poor woman. That is just awful.

I sometimes think about Jade Goody and what a strange phenomenon she was. Hugely famous from Big Brother in 2002, massively public life and then death in 2009. A seven year whirlwind of fame. Here and then gone.

im shocked at the effect her death had on me, I wasn’t a fan, never really cared for BB, but somehow this woman from Bermondsey made an impact, knew how to play the media, got herself some fame & money then bam game over, tragic!

TigerDroveAgain · 14/11/2025 00:51

Gosh, what a sad - but not depressing - thread

Mine is George Baldock, perhaps not a celebrity but a talented footballer who had played on loan for a short time for the club I support. At the first match after his death, there was barely a dry eye in the stadium when the compère did a short tribute to him ending with his voice breaking on the adage “never fall in love with a loan player”.

Presto95 · 14/11/2025 00:53

The Queen
Elvis
Terry Wogan
Karen Carpenter
Tony Slattery

IridiumSky · 14/11/2025 00:56

Ridiculous.
None, ever.

Because I don’t know any.

@Rookie93
Yes, same here wrt Sinead O'Connor.

exLtEveDallas · 14/11/2025 06:10

Bowie, Prince and Keith Flint. I think because I was able to see them all Live, the loss of their talents and total showmanship hit quite hard - they were so very different as artists, but all exuded something quite special that stars these days don't seem to have. I expect if I had been older when he died, I would feel the same about Freddie Mercury.

Kirsti McColl still saddens me, the way she died more than anything. So senseless and so quick, her poor family living with that.

More recently the killing of Charlie Kirk. I think because it was so public, I still find myself mulling over it and being shocked that it happened. I don't know that he was a huge loss to the world - obviously to his family and his fans he was - but again I can't help thinking about such a senseless death.

GinkoRebelFoxes · 14/11/2025 07:34

Terry Pratchett

She saved a lot of lives raising awareness of cervical cancer and encouraging women to go for smear tests. Jade Goody went from zero to hero.

Oh, yes. Him, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are my "No, this can't be happening" people.

I want to add Mick Jagger
and Keef to that list, I have this morbid theory that whoever pre-deceases the other the one left behind will soon follow as they are like a married couple who have been connected for all their adult lives

Did you see the email Leonard Cohen wrote to Marrianne just before she died. His death happened a few month later

Dearest Marianne,
I’m just a little behind you, close enough to take your hand. This old body has given up, just as yours has too, and the eviction notice is on its way any day now.
“I’ve never forgotten your love and your beauty. But you know that. I don’t have to say any more. Safe travels old friend. See you down the road. Love and gratitude. Leonard

Such beautiful words, brief, clear and full of love
