try Alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol

i find the sinus sprays pretty helpful too

Sonolanona · 10/11/2025 19:41

Depends how much you like your stomach lining.. it's not a good idea. Hospitals are controlled enviroments... randomly taking double the dose is not going to magic your cold away. Take the recommended dose of paracetamol in between instead, and an up the nose decongestant ( no more than a couple of days)

mindutopia · 10/11/2025 19:41

Take paracetamol instead.

What’s causing the pain? Is it congestion? If so, decongestant and saline nasal spray will be much more effective than ibuprofen.

Are you sure you are taking about ibuprofen OP? Its an anti inflammatory and any hospital I've worked, in 3 countries, have never given doses that high!
What country are you in? Some countries have over the counter meds which we don't in the UK.
Is it sinus pain you have or general, bodily aches?
Have you taken any codeine, paracetamol or something for the sinuses?

Branleuse · 10/11/2025 19:43

Where are you on holiday?
Id take paracetamol on top of the ibuprofen, and an antihistamine.

Coffeeishot · 10/11/2025 19:44

Take paracetamol instead don't take that much ibuprofen, we had a rotten cold in Spain, the pharmacy gave me stronger paracetamol.

AceKitten · 10/11/2025 19:45

Sorry I should have said already taking paracetamol as well

Ibuprofen can cause acid reflux which is horrible & can be very painful. My Dr says I can only take 2 per day maximum for pain and to have food with it. As others have said you can alternate with paracetamol as well, but be sensible.

placemats · 10/11/2025 19:52

Sounds like Covid. Which isn't a bad cold. Don't overdo the ibuprofen. 400g Max x 1 every 4 hours along with 500g of paracetamol for three days max, then tail off. Drink lots of fluids and include milky drinks and/or soups in this as well. Keep hydrated.

Lemonade2011 · 10/11/2025 19:56

I sometimes take 3, (200mg tabs) but only when I’m really sore, and no more than 1.2g in 24hr for exceptional circumstances can you get some lemsip type medicine? A decongestant might help more but feel for you,,sounds completely miserable

Shoutygouty · 10/11/2025 19:58

No - look after your kidneys.

Gargle some salt water if you have access to salt? Cooled boiled if you can and slightly warm.

alternate cold and warm compress to eat pain.

loads of fluids. Try to get some honey and ginger and have in hot water. Will help throat.

unless you’ve taken the massive drug dose - you can try some whiskey for throat!! But don’t if you’ve taken lots of pills.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 10/11/2025 20:00

Headache may be sinus pain - decongestant like others has said. Vapour rub or olbas oil.

where are you ?

hope you feel better soon.

IndieRocknRoll · 10/11/2025 20:05

I know someone who ended up with kidney damage from large doses of ibuprofen.
Just take the recommended dose.

waitam · 10/11/2025 20:09

Where is the pain? - that's the question.

If you're bunged up, feeling rotten, headache, chills etc. then I'd go for paracetemol. Ibuprofen is mainly for inflammation like arthritis and body pain AFAIK, and as others have said it can be very dangerous in high doses leading to stomach bleeding in extreme cases. You have been warned!

If you are in Spain, I can recommend Frenadol from the pharmacy. It has paracetemol, something for coughs and an anti histamine all in one. Hope you feel better soon.

Alpacajigsaw · 10/11/2025 20:12

I’ve taken 600 mg 3 times a day but on medical advice for a specific matter (not a cold) and only for a few days

Bitzee · 10/11/2025 20:12

Try to see a GP in case if you have a sinus and/or ear infection requiring antibiotics. I wouldn’t take massive ibuprofen doses- not good for your stomach. In the meantime try decongestant and a saline spray.

FluentRuby · 10/11/2025 20:24

I’m really struggling with a horrible cold at the moment so I’m dosing up on Nurofen cold and flu, an anaesthetic throat spray, eucalyptus drops and gargling with vodka.

The throat spray is a miracle product as my throat is the most frustrating part. Can’t take paracetamol as I’m allergic.

If you can get hold of some try a throat spray.
