What popular songs can you not stand.

For me it is Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence.

I love S and G version, even though I'm a metal head. I love Disturbed even though Dave Draiman can be a bit of a tool and ha e seen them live about 8 times but this cover is just over produced and overplayed. I think it got them a temporary new following of middle aged women! (No shade at middle aged women, I am one myself, well middle aged plus).but the people I saw at the gigs after this song was realeased weren't Disturbed fans!

Got my bingo card ready for the Taylor Swift bashing. Wink

Me. She’s very wishy washy.

If we are allowed to stray into classical music I really loathe The Lark Ascending and have no idea why it's so popular.

NO!
Hush your mouth.
I love anything by Ralph Vaughan Wiliams though Lark Ascending is not my favourite but it has to be up there as one of the greatest classical pieces of all time.

Not sure her songs qualify as popular in the sense of everyone knowing them. Apart from Shake It Off which, we’ve been reminded numerous times on Mumsnet, doesn’t reflect her overall output. Whereupon we’re treated to swathes of lyrics and links to YouTube. Happy to fill up that bingo card any way I can🤣 With the disclaimer that I don’t know any of her songs other than the aforementioned, so am not qualified to give an opinion.

Londondreamer · 10/11/2025 09:10

Well, thanks for that everyone. You have reminded me of hundreds of songs I really can't stand and some how managed to block from my mind and now I'm stuck in some sort of maelstrom of horrific earworms! 😅

Anything by Phil Collins

Cannot stand Sam smiths dancing with a stranger. I quite like stay with me, unholy and leave your lover. every other song of his I haven’t liked, none so much as dancing with a stranger which makes me 😡 😂

Can’t stand that man.

Mistyglade · 10/11/2025 09:49

Everything by beyonce. I’m getting too invested in this thread!

Umbrella by Rihanna …..aarrrgh

Dull of Kintyre more like ... such a dirge, how did it stay at no. 1 for so long??

😆 Dull of Kintyre! 😂

I also think that song is drab, and don't get how it was No 1 for 9 weeks.

See also these 3. ALL at No. 1 for waaaaaay too long. 3 or 4 months IIRC. All boring and dreary.

Everything I Do by Bryan Adams.

Love Is All Around by Wet Wet Wet

I will Always Love You by Whitney Houston. (Dolly Parton's original version was much better.) Whitney can sing and has a powerful voice, but she sometimes shrieks and wails. Like Mariah Carey, Beyonce, and also Jessie Jay. Jessie started off OK, but as her career progressed, she got very shouty.

Also, I think Led Zeppelin, Coldplay, and Pink Floyd are crap, and the majority of their songs are dire drivel ... I only like one song by each of those bands.. In fact I can only name one song by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. That's how much THEY interest me.

It's funny how so many posters seem to dislike the same few dozen or so songs. Bit weird. Shame that there couldn't have been a way for people to put their top 7 or 8 songs that they hate, without seeing anyone else's choices.

Then once it's too late to edit the post, other peoples choices are visible. I wonder how much of this is herd mentality? And if some people would have picked different songs, had they not seen what others are putting?

Sadly I didn’t rtft before my original post but I suspect the usual suspects listed are down to them simply being irritating and overplayed records. Not sure herd mentality applies to universally annoying songs.

No, the whole point of the thread is POPULAR songs you can’t stand. So there wouldn’t be much point in saying “I hate Neon Pill by Cage the Elephant” because hardly anyone will have heard of it. 🙄

Lady in red - Chris de Burgh
so many 1980s songs did not age well

I'd forgotten about that one. Bill Bailey did a great parody of it.

Shake It Off is the only Taylor Swift song I can remember. I don't dislike her music - it just doesn't stick in my head. My seven-year-old despairs of me.

Must admit I quite like that one too. But I'm going to land myself on the philistine bench now and own that Butterfly is my least-loved opera ever. It's glacial - both in terms of plot and music. Was Puccini having an off-day? La Boheme is much better!

But who is anyone to decide what is 'universally annoying?' I like many of the songs that most posters keep putting (and as I said, loads of people are going for the same couple of dozen songs.)

I stand by what I said. It's herd mentality for many. I would love to see what people had put if they hadn't seen anyone else's choices. (And without googling anything!)

No-one is going to admit to being swayed/being part of herd mentality of course, because people don't realise they're doing it.

No. I have a strong love for music having been raised by musical parents. I suspect your herd mentality theory is actually memories being jogged. It sounds like your taste goes against the grain here.

Nope, I would still have said Bohemian Rhapsody.

To be fair, I like a lot of the songs referenced on this thread. No one else has disliked 'Happy' apart from me. But my memory has been jogged about the truly execrable 'Lady in Red' - music to vomit to. So I'll join the herd on that one

I hate Happy as well. A teacher at the school I worked in played it at every assembly then I had to learn it for a choir piece.

What a load of nonsense. I don’t need google to tell me I hate Bohemian Rhapsody, I don’t need to read others comments to know I hate Summer of 69.

These songs are extremely well known, they sold millions of copies so clearly a lot of people like them. However, they get overplayed on the radio, at parties and functions so people get sick of them.

It’s really not that hard to understand.
