Posting on here for traffic. Has anyone else applied for this? I only came across it by accident in February this year and applied right away. Basically it’s a way of improving your National Insurance contributions if you were claiming child benefit or caring for someone and not able to work and pay National Insurance from around 1978. All the details are on the HMRC website and the claim form is very simple to complete.
I applied in February and found out last week I’d been successful. Now I’ve just got to wait for the DWP to inform me how much my state pension will increase by and if I’m entitled to any back pay. I just hope I’m not waiting another nine months.

Thanks for posting this. I looked into this several months ago, on behalf of my mum, but couldn’t work out from her national insurance record if she is eligible. May I ask if you applied speculatively or did you check/confirm your eligibility before applying? Thanks.

NCNC4 Hi, no I just applied for it. My DH read a news article about a lady claiming it. The form is on the HMRC and is really simple to complete. It took me about five minutes. I applied in February and from about July I rang them every three weeks to check on the progress! Like I said I finally received a reply last week.

Great, thanks. Just submitted on behalf of mum. I’ll strap in for a long wait! Glad yours was successful. 👍

My advice is apply the worst they can say is not eligible.

NCNC4, Good for you. I hope she’s successful.

@Overpeover Thank you. Would you mind coming back to let us know any further details about increases and backpay, please? Only if you’re comfortable with it, of course. It would be interesting to get a gauge of the kinds of amounts that could be involved. I understand it will differ from person to person, of course.

NCNC4, no problem.

That’s great to hear you’ve had a positive outcome! I applied on behalf of my Mum back in July and the gov.uk website suggests she should have heard back last week, but nothing yet. It’s depressing to hear it took 9 months for you… Did you receive the outcome response by email or letter and can I ask what phone number you used to chase? Many thanks.
